akanebanashi - very good imo

This really sucks. As bad as things are for the big publishers with layoffs, the funding situation for smaller third party studios is just dire right now.

For me - shaders are big blobs of math. If noodles were an efficient, readable way to express math... we'd write math using noodles. I don't do much shader work but I do a lot of geometry/vector math and I cannot read any calculation of more than a couple operations in noodle form.

The funniest part of Blueprint specifically in Unreal to me is the idea that somehow reading syntax is a higher technical burden than manually handling replication. I promise learning to read a programming language is easier than learning when and how a property or function should be replicated

yeah, I think for me the big difference is that the further you get away from the consequences of your actions being reflected in feedback on-screen the more I'm likely to dislike it. I am sure a huge part of my tendency here is the thousands of hours I've spent in fighting games lol
010
nathaniel @pedrothedagger.bsky.social · 06/10/2026
Because you can't really use visual feedback to understand when the input buffer is open I tend to like games that allow you to evict things out of the buffer more freely. But once your character is animating I think it's very reasonable to not allow you to cancel.
230
nathaniel @pedrothedagger.bsky.social · 06/10/2026
and ppl often complain that it "drops inputs" because they're hitting them too early, especially if they're used to games with massive input buffers where you can hit an input with half a second or more still remaining on your current anim and get the next input to come out.
130
nathaniel @pedrothedagger.bsky.social · 06/10/2026
I think there's actually two separate issues here - whether the attack itself is cancellable is a separate issue from whether you can evict inputs out of the buffer before they execute. classic MonHun actually has historically pretty short buffer windows
120
nathaniel @pedrothedagger.bsky.social · 06/10/2026
so with slow weapons the pain of a sloppier buffer is much less substantial in most CAGs vs the fromsoft games, where they have insane buffer windows and don't let most things cancel buffered inputs
230
nathaniel @pedrothedagger.bsky.social · 06/10/2026
usually the CAGs I enjoy have a shorter buffer (you have to time subsequent button presses more) and/or a larger set of actions that will squash a buffered input (dodge, e.g.)
120
nathaniel @pedrothedagger.bsky.social · 06/10/2026
Mostly it comes down to extermely finnicky stuff I picked up from too many hours in fighting games. I really dislike wide input buffers without really specific prioritization on slow weapons
110
nathaniel @pedrothedagger.bsky.social · 06/10/2026
ironically this is one of the big difference between soulslikes and character action for me. I am decidedly not a big slow weapon guy in soulslikes but I love the big slow weapons in DMC/Bayonetta/etc.
230
nathaniel @pedrothedagger.bsky.social · 06/10/2026
ah I'm sorry I'm constitutionally incapable of picking anything other than the slowest, highest damage weapon and trying to style with it in these kinds of games lol

As both a real remedy and character action sicko I’m scared my standards will be too high and I won’t enjoy it, but when I saw they did impact frames on some attacks I decided I have to see what kinda sauce they’re cooking

I mean "finding entirely new, unanticpated uses for bricks" is as close as you can get IMO to a tagline for kitfox as a publisher

Hey, do you think it's appropriate for one of your writers to be publicly calling for the use of nuclear weapons (an 'atomic wedgie') against writers he doesn't like

definitely don't have a "don't get the discord subpoenad" safe response to this one lol

yes? I think you're misinterpreting what I am saying

The economic hole left by the growth you might choose not to do will be filled by someone else who chooses to do it. You can dislike that, fair, but just pretending it’s not true is delusional
120
nathaniel @pedrothedagger.bsky.social · 05/10/2026
The degrowth point of view here is nuts. What precisely in the history of the world would lead anyone to believe that given the choice between economic stagnation and fucking up the environment more, any reasonable society would choose economic stagnation?

Super curious if part of Capcom going public with their engine stuff is a plan to get into engine licensing. I think it would be pretty smart and really exciting to have another competitor in that space.

Man the RE:Engine stuff that capcom is talking about is really interesting. They are using a lot of modern C++ stuff and doing decompilation from C# to convert to C++ as part of their build process. This makes IL2CPP (if you're familiar from unity) look archaic (source: x.com/mizuki_izuna...)
showing that they're using modern C++ to get automatic memory management and that you can call C# libraries from C++mostly their build process, the one japanese part at the bottom says "decompile", so their build process decompiles the C# dll into C++

In actuality a lightweight MCP that exposes *extremely* common tasks as tools and also has a tool for API discovery is probably the best way to go. But if you build a scriptable API vs having an LLM compose MCP calls, you have something that's still useful when Anthropic and OpenAI are down, or more
350
nathaniel @pedrothedagger.bsky.social · 02/10/2026
Good first step - any time you hear anyone say the words “MCP” you should say “actually, it’s more efficient for AI and token usage if we make a python API and let the AI script against it”. Which is both true and also means that humans can do more with the tool.

We have entered a historic moment in game development where executives and investors have become interested in directing huge amounts of time and money into dev pipelines. It is the responsibility of every technically minded designer to judo that into actually making things better for humans lol

nathaniel @pedrothedagger.bsky.social · 02/10/2026
and of course, data corruption issues. Text data is better for AI but the reason it's better for AI is also why it's better for humans.
010
nathaniel @pedrothedagger.bsky.social · 02/10/2026
no doubt making their data more "AI native" was the core motivator here but if you've ever worked on games with text and binary data representations you probably know the massive pain in the ass of working with binary data (no mergability, no human readability, have to view in propietary editor)

this is a nice example of a class of thing that I like to bundle under "making tools more effective for AI is an excuse to make them better for humans" - Capcom made a super-fast text-backup serializer/deserializer for .NET to support better perf with text data formats github.com/CAPCOM-TD-OS...

I would like my younger US followers to know when I was in middle school, there were stories a few times a year of boys being tortured/killed for supposedly being gay. In the US. In the late 90’s. If you are a zoomer or later you were born into a kinder world than existed just a few years prior.

as a former designer on world of warcraft, I don't even need the gross sex stuff to find the premise of mushoku tensei extremely unappealing. Oh, the grossest, dumbest guy you know inexplicably became massively successful? we have that at home, they're called "streamers" or "content creators"

people wishing death on her because she was invited to close a jpop/kpop cultural exchange festival and the organizer fucked up and didn't allow time for an encore or something? I can barely even parse what they're actually mad about lol and why they're mad at her and not the organizers

I'm also perplexed that they chose to show this with a still camera. Usually this kind of sub-pixel detail stuff looks a lot worse (and the difference looks a lot clearer) in motion because the sub-pixel detail will resolve a little differently frame to frame.

I don't know if I should have felt good about it, but when I offhandedly referenced the AI security guy being part of the data infographic orgy and my wife looked at me like I was insane, I got the pleasure of being the one to let her know that whole thing exists.

The video has some shots where the improvement looks a little clearer but yeah it seems marginal in most cases. the ghost of yotei grass is probably the only case where it is like "yeah ok that's better". Assuming you're not giving up any performance lol

it's been more than 10 years and I'm still a little salty that they couldn't use my song recommendation in f:nv (the world we knew) even tho I understand why. but it is actually the perfect song for fallout and even moreso new vegas lol

And, hot take, 12/8 IS just 4/4 with a triplet feel. Say what you want I do not believe ANY human counts 12/8 as 12 beats lol

remembering the time my guitar teacher was like "oh yeah that song has a 12/8 ballad feel" and I just stared at him blankly because I had never actually seen a 12/8 ballad on sheet music and always just heard them as 4/4 played with triplet feel lol
