I’m so happy WHO chose lived experience as the official theme. Good decisions start by listening to the people most affected by them. And those voices should help shape what happens next, because they are the ones who will live with the impact of those decisions.

This really stayed with me. Being part of research should not mean being left to navigate the gap back to regular care on your own.

Really looking forward to this year's summit. We’ve built the 2026 program around the questions that keep coming up after treatment ends and I’m glad to finally share it. I hope you'll join us. Happy to answer any questions here.

Before psychedelic research, I built software. Then an MDMA-assisted therapy trial showed me that clinical research has a user-experience problem. For @onemindorg.bsky.social, I wrote about why lived experience should shape research, not just decorate it. onemind.org/lived-experi... #psychedelics

Lived Experience (LX) in healthcare is what User Experience (UX) is in software. The idea is simple...the people who actually use a product or service should help shape its design, priorities, and continuous improvement. Lived experience helps reveal what can’t be seen from the outside.

Here’s to looking less at trials from the top down and more from the inside.

This is one of the biggest gaps I see. What patients and trial participants carry can be very real even when it does not fit neatly into a checkbox.

This has been the most purposeful and meaningful work I've done in my life that's much bigger than myself. Feeling thankful for the impact it's made so far and the people who've supported it.

If participant experience helps make the research possible, it should also help shape how that research is designed, supported, and understood. Here's to helping shape a future where healthcare advances with rigor, integrity and the people most affected at the center.

I've always appreciated Ron's unfiltered communication. His experience is vital for researchers designing trials and for regulators approving protocols. The clinical research field needs better experience design so that science doesn't get put above participant wellbeing.

This is really at the core of it for me. Too many important issues get dismissed as anecdotal when they are actually showing us where the system is falling short and how it could improve.

Really important point, Tehseen. What sounds philosophical on the surface often has direct consequences for how people are understood and treated.

The outside story and the inside reality are not always the same and this is the main reason why lived experience input matters so much in this field.

This is such an important reminder that what participants need most is not always captured by the study design. Thank you, Elizabeth, for sharing so openly.

What I appreciate about this paper is that it goes beyond scorekeeping and takes seriously how participants themselves describe the changes they experienced compared with standard care.

This is something I’ve heard again and again from patients and trial participants. Knowing a practitioner has relevant lived experience can change how safe the whole process feels. Thanks @drmonnica.bsky.social for sharing this.

It's a bit like reading about surgery risks before an operation. You may do your best to understand the words but you still don't really know what recovery will feel like in your body and mind until you are fully living it.

Key workshop takeaways: - A shared vocabulary you can use in teams & institutions - A practical integration map (design → consent → conduct → follow-up → interpretation) - A one-page checklist to reduce tokenism and strengthen impact and accountability - Networking with peers & fellow professionals

Degrees can signal knowledge, but they do not automatically signal the judgment, presence, and humility this work requires for patients and trial participants to feel safe, supported, and genuinely cared for.

Some of the most important improvements in care begin when lived experience is treated as expertise, not just input.

This is exactly why study design should be informed not only by methodology, but by what participation actually feels like. Inspired by your courage, Kathy, for speaking up.

The real question is not whether lived experience is invited in, but whether it is trusted enough to shape decisions.

The real test is not whether a study looks rigorous on paper but whether its safeguards hold up in lived reality.

I’m especially grateful to Joost and the OPEN Foundation for making real space for patient and trial participant voices at ICPR. It is one of the few conferences I’d strongly recommend for both the quality of the presentations and the strength of the connections you can build there.

What stood out to me is how much of real experience lives outside the boxes we define. That gap is where a lot of the signal actually is.

One thing I hear repeatedly from participants is that the courage to feel difficult emotions often comes from the sense of safety created by the therapeutic setting. That environment can make a huge difference in how the experience unfolds.

The more conversations I have with trial participants, the more clear it becomes that many early warning signals about risks and challenges already exist in lived experience. We just need systems that are willing to listen.

Pedram Dara @pedramdara.bsky.social · 06/03/2026
One thing I’ve learned from speaking with dozens of trial participants is that subjective experience often contains insights our current measurement tools miss. The question isn’t brain or experience. It’s whether we’re willing to take both seriously.

Good clinical research and practice include people with lived and living experience throughout the design and delivery of treatments.
