I heard the news of Chris Wickham’s illness only yesterday and woke up to the news of his devastating death. Not sure how to even express my sadness. This is unbelievable. RIP Chris. The world is smaller without you.

What you realise after watching two seasons of the TV show Dark Matter is that for American screenwriters, it’s easier to imagine people moving across 100 parallel worlds and dimensions than to imagine them moving away from Chicago!

It’s amazing how so few Classicist have responded to this pile of nonsense, except the most racist Oxbridge Classics professor I have ever seen calling it “a great speech in style of ancient Greek orations.” As a historian, I would’ve been disgusted about politicians abusing my work in such way.

For no reason whatsoever, I have started studying Ancient South Arabian, mostly Sabaitic, this term. George Hatke, whose work I have followed for years, is a keen teacher & I really look forward to learning from him. So exciting to be a student again after so long, even if for just two hours a week!

I did not listen to @pseudo-isidore.bsky.social and sat through this to the end. All I can tell you is that the most boring 19th century article on the Norman conquest of England is still more exciting, creative, intriguing, and fun than this catastrophic tv production. Avoid at ALL costs.

For pete’s sakes, or for the sake of every American out there, could someone inform T-rump that Iran is almost as large as California, Arizona, New Mexico, and Texas put together? And more populated than all of them together? Or larger than Iraq, Afghanistan & Syria together?

Watching, enduring, this TV series and missing the days that the BBC produced masterpieces like I, Claudius and Rome, instead of this Game of Thrones knockoff. The real story of Harold II and William the Conqueror is so much more interesting than this nonsense…

As you get older, you inherently feel how each academic workshop/conference originated. Which one was envisioned by the enthusiastic grad student, which one was set up by the ladder climbing early career, which one is by the jaded prof with money left from his last project, etc…

The Avesta, an ancient sacred text, provides clear evidence that Iranians originated from Siberia & once inhabited most of Central Asia. I’m planning to take this evidence to the UNGA next year as part of an Iranian claim to Siberia, Kyrgyzstan, Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Tajikistan, and Turkmenistan.

Just finished this translation of Laurent Binet’s imaginative alt-historical novel Civilizations wherein Sapa Inca Atahualpa ends up conquering Europe. Well written, humorous, & gripping. First time in years that I could not put a book down. Greatly recommended, even though I have some criticism.
Picture of the front cover of the books Civilisations bu Laurent Binet. It shows a collage of an old wrinkled manuscript, some older lithograph, and parts of the portrait of a man (supposedly Atahualpa) where we can only see the eyes and the nose, and another painting showing a sun on top of it. Back cover of the book with a snipped and endorsements. The snippet reads: “It’s world history, but not as we know it.” It continues “Freydis is the leader of a band of Viking warriors who get as far as Panama. Nobody knows what became of them.

Five hundred years later, Christopher Columbus is sailing for the Americas, dreaming of gold and conquest.
Even when captured, his faith in his mission is unshaken.

Thirty years after that, Atahualpa, the last Inca emperor, arrives in a Europe ready for revolution. Fortunately, he has a recent guidebook to acquiring power - Machiavelli's The Prince. So, the stage is set for a Europe ruled by Incas and, when the Aztecs arrive on the scene, for a great war that will change history forever.”

The endorsements are:

'A bold and thrilling experiment in counterfactual history from a masterful storyteller' Financial Times

And
'A wild romp of a book that turns history on its head'
Guardian

The book is translated from the French by Sam Taylor

Anybody wants a Latin puzzle? “… antegressum regem uestis claritudine rutilantem. quem iuxta laeuus incedebat Grumbates, Chionitarum rex nobilis…dextra rex Albanorum…” So, is the Albanian king to the right side of the king, or “to the right” as Ammianus sees him (so to the left of the king)?

I need a new type of music to love. I usually listen to a wide variety of music, including lots of “world music,” but my comfort music is hard rock/metal. Lately though, that does not quite hit the spot. Somehow I need something more profound but still hardcore.

Working on a paper abt the Sasanian siege of Amida in 359 & realising its less on the siege than abt arguing against different scholarly takes on Ammianus. Yet another case of a primary source dominating our narrative, while the actual event isn’t so important for others to note.

If you need to write a 4 page “Conclusion” to a 19 page article, in which you bring up three new arguments & end it with “well, these things look similar,” you probably did not write your article very well and wasted a lot of my time.

The US gov’t, taking clues from Loki, is fomenting mischief around the world. Presently, it has prepared a nice headache for Spain’s leftist gov’t to punish it for not toeing the line. This will probably cause the fall of the Spanish gov’t, but the US should also consider Loki’s fate…

The Roissy-CDG airport of Paris never fails to amuse & surprise. Who’d think that in the land of Haute Cuisine, food options of an entire terminal are poorer than that of the land of bitterballen and limited to two bakeries & Carrefour City supermarket? Even American airports do better than this!
