Matteo Fogli @pecus.it · 05/07/2026Gardens next to dark forests. An impeccable piece on the humanity and personal purpose of a great tech professional, that might just as well apply to many of us. 010
Matteo Fogli @pecus.it · 05/07/2026Thanks for writing this out so beautifully. It resonates with the feelings and conversations of many of the Internet old schoolers, those of us who enjoyed sharing, building communities and belonging. Sadly the sense of belonging is fading and being erased. Very happy you found purpose elsewhere! 020
Matteo Fogli @pecus.it · 05/07/2026I agree with the fucked side. But it’s work. Unless you find purpose in work, it’s just a terribly hard time to feel safe about income. on the + side, the skills that make you good at jobs that are being replaced are actually very durable skills. But what a mistake is to align purpose with work. 000
Matteo Fogli @pecus.it · 23/06/2026The #StateOfCSS survey is still out, and despite being off programming, it feels good to still be in the game (if you care about CSS, it shouldn't be hard to be in the top 100% of all respondents, like yours truly). survey.devographics.com/survey/state...survey.devographics.comState of CSS 2026Take the State of CSS survey 010

Matteo Fogli @pecus.it · 01/10/2025Autocomplete can be both magic and frustrating (tab to indent a line and cursor fills it with unexpected and useless stuff). Using AI to plan complex task works well, while executing the plan much less. The feedback loop, especially when refactoring CSS, is poor and requires integrating visual diff 110
Matteo Fogli @pecus.it · 01/09/2025Apparently you also need java, preferably a good version, as this is a paradigmatic case of garbage in garbage out 010
Matteo Fogli @pecus.it · 12/08/2025> We often choose the comfort of importing solutions over the discomfort of understanding problems. I loved this beautifully disarming insight. Read Loren’s excellent manifesto if you care about the Web 000
Matteo Fogli @pecus.it · 12/08/2025I really appreciate this take, it resonates with over ten years of practicing the same awareness, favoring the least complex tool or language for any goal and going to the next level only when its limits had been reached. 010
Matteo Fogli @pecus.it · 04/08/2025Bought a road bike for my son’s 18th birthday. Hit a great deal on a second hand full carbon Giant kept maniacally well. My son is chill and shy, you’d almost mistake it for being grumpy, definitely silent about emotions. I could see sparkles in his eyes. It really made my day. 010
Matteo Fogli @pecus.it · 22/05/2025It’s a mess, for everyone, regardless of digital literacy. It’s confusing and unintuitive and creates anxiety because you must work with it and can’t dismiss it. And don’t get me started on the feature duplication with outlook yet with slightly different behaviors. 120

Matteo Fogli @pecus.it · 15/04/2025My previous role as CEO (of my own company) was as much technical as business. I have shifted into an exclusive managerial role that I enjoy, but I still crave for code, despite having very little time to devote to it. Finding balance is difficult, when Frontend is well rooted in your heart 010

Matteo Fogli @pecus.it · 14/04/2025Ofc, but z-index is a scalar value, and infinity is a value you can’t match. So to change it you have to add specificity. At the same specificity level, infinity does not play nice. It solves specific use cases 100
Matteo Fogli @pecus.it · 14/04/2025The infinite specificity of this works against every good practice I’ve learnt and taught about CSS (not that, as always, there aren’t good cases for this) 300

Matteo Fogli @pecus.it · 16/03/2025Someone higher up the corporate chain might not know what implications blind requests to dev have. Make sure they understand the consequences and act accordingly. Put your ethics and privacy laws first (in EU, the GDPR umbrella most likely provides you with a reason for your questioning) 020

Matteo Fogli @pecus.it · 03/03/2025I’m speculating but passing a `lang=“xx”` on the `img` tag should instruct the browser to what language the alt text is in.
