Spent some time this summer touching grass and shooting street portraits with the locals. I'm on the hunt for a new series now that the weather's turning ...

Do it! That’s awesome. I always offer to send people prints. TFP but like … wholesome? 😁 A lot of people don’t have good pictures of themselves and appreciate it.

Street portraits are my jam. I’m pretty shy by default. My camera is like a magical passport to get access to communities and meet interesting people I wouldn’t otherwise have access to. 😁

I feel this! I love photography and have shot (on and off) for 30 years. Getting paid for it and trying to make a living was a brutal grind and sucked the joy out of it. Now I just shoot for fun, on my own terms … and I love it more than I ever have.

Formal proofs are the ultimate intoxicant for deterministic systems. 😅

TLDR: if you think AI is a bubble, get out of ORCL and into SAP

peat @peat.org · 05/09/2026
… the big ERPs are Actually Bad because humans aren’t good at counting things on shelves and the (very few) immutable bitemporal implementations are expensive AF and built on platforms that are extremely exposed to the AI bubble. Except for SAP. They’re just expensive AF.

I’ve loved the practical problems of CAP since Sir Aphyr Kingsbury did terrible and wonderful things to databases back in The Day. Now I’m working through some hard problems with proving correctness in high volume distributed inventory systems, and I’m feeling thankful for what Twitter used to be.

Learning about TLA+ may have been a mistake. Now I want a much faster computer.

... All I really want for Christmas are legal penalties for companies trying to pass off their shitty AI golems as real humans.

I suspect y'all would love @sachajudd.com's newsletter. This week was particularly awesome -- about art, AI, and human labor. newsletter.sachajudd.com/archive/made... (photo from a presentation by Jae Lubberink)
A photo of a presentation slide titled "creative renaissance in spite of AI, not via AI" that shows connections between eras and their art: romanticism as a result of nausea from the enlightenment, arts & crafts movement as a result of nausea from the industrial revolution, and "romanticize the toil?" as a result of nausea from the algorithm/AI era. Red letters at the bottom state "you are here" and point to "nausea" for the algorithm/AI era.

Really loving how clean the Flickr experience is. No algorithms or advertising stupidness. Huge photos. Clear licensing. So many great artists. I'm grinding on getting more of my photos posted ... there's a few years to catch up on! www.flickr.com/photos/miste...

I had to double check to make sure that was what I thought it was, not what I was afraid it was, given, you know, what you’re famous for.

Hey all! I'm hosting a workshop about freelancing as a software developer, geared for people who are new to the biz. I'm aiming for late June, and I'd love to hear from you: What topics are you interested in? What format works for you? forms.gle/qocSwYeiGfDZ... (Reposts always appreciated. ❤️)

Y'all know what I love? In a dark way. Bad! Not good! I love when people come back to some kind of grounded, well researched truth. In this case: nerding out about chemistry and stumbling into the seedy Montanto shit show. Click bait? Yes. Accurate? Also yes? www.youtube.com/watch?v=CxVX...

Unpopular opinion incoming. The problem isn't capitalism. It's assholes. [redacted exposition on assholes redefining capitalism and perverting Adam Smith's invisible hand] [redacted fanfic about invisible hands and assholes] [revolution] And kids, that's how @buttplug.engineer became emperor.

System prompt: Tell me I'm a piece of shit and fight me on everything; you better have evidence you can back up with citations. I'm gonna look at every thing you send me with caustic cynicism and criticism. Fuck you. [6 months later] I can't wait to tell LinkedIn about how amazing I am OMG.

The best and worst thing about being an American who (kinda) speaks German is understanding what Germans are saying about Americans these days. 😅

Welcome to being an Old And Respected Person and/or a spam target ... but assuming good intentions: hell yeah! The kids are alright! This is actually awesome. The question is not if the kids are alright. The question is how you want to help. ... and/or how you can improve your spam filters. 😅

"Good for business." Holy shit does that mean a lot of things. Pretending to be an F100 company, defending your turf and protecting your wealth ... ... or being an entrepreneur, and taking a fair shot at solving other people's problems? Defending yourself vs. solving bigger problems. Hmm. 🤔

peat @peat.org · 09/09/2025
I don't share this lightly. I believe @devingaffney.com and the @graze.social team are working toward a future that transcends borders and bank accounts. "Decentralization" is a word that scares people with too much money and power. Fuck 'em. Let them be scared. Let's build something better. ❤️

The antidote to "MCU fatigue" is the Gen Z version of a low-fi flick about a guy drilling his head because of math, or maybe a bunch of shitty people monologuing and murdering to a retro soundtrack. Aronofsky is 56. Tarantino is a Boomer. ... but I'm old. Who are the filmmakers I'm missing out on?

I'm disappointed with recent dystopian fiction. "The Ministry of the Future" and "Fall" and others ... Blockchain? Singularity? AI? They focus on tech, not humanity. The joy (uhhh?) of 1984 and F451 isn't the technology, it's the psychology. What's a good, modern, human centric, dystopian fiction?

For those who’ve just stumbled over here (welcome and thank you!) mostly I work in three dimensions…work in progress, destined for bronze and silver casting #InverteFest
A 3D printed gray resin sculpture of a cicada, wings spread, held partly upside down in my hand to show all the central details. Sculpted from scratch (no scans), assembled from more than a dozen parts.
