I suspect y'all would love @sachajudd.com's newsletter. This week was particularly awesome -- about art, AI, and human labor. newsletter.sachajudd.com/archive/made... (photo from a presentation by Jae Lubberink)
A photo of a presentation slide titled "creative renaissance in spite of AI, not via AI" that shows connections between eras and their art: romanticism as a result of nausea from the enlightenment, arts & crafts movement as a result of nausea from the industrial revolution, and "romanticize the toil?" as a result of nausea from the algorithm/AI era. Red letters at the bottom state "you are here" and point to "nausea" for the algorithm/AI era.

A set of alternating images, starting with my original headshot (my avatar photo). It's transformed into an anime style by ChatGPT, then transformed back into a photorealistic headshot. The series stabilizes after about six or seven transformations.

It’s @rudyfraser.com with the second most important concept slide this morning. … and his deck just keeps going. The entire presentation is a beautiful follow up on these concepts, and approachability, and moderation, and autonomy, and and and … ❤️ #ATmosphereConf #BlackSky
Horseless Carriage Syndrome
* New technologies initially imitate the old technologies they are replacing
* It makes the new tech more understandable by keeping familiar features
* If we never move past the "horseless carriage" stage, we fail to reap the full benefits of innovation

One of (if not the) most important slides at #ATmosphereConf. Vulnerable people WILL be attacked in social spaces. Everyone benefits when we understand and systemically defend against those attacks. (From @kissane.bsky.social)
COLLABORATIVE SOCIAL THREAT
MODELING
1. As individuals and communities inhabiting our systems. what do you need to protect?
2. From whom do you need to protect those things? What vectors do they use?
3. How bad are the consequences if they aren't protected?
4. Which elements of our systems/tools/protocol/policies make it harder for you to protect what you need to protect? What could we do to help?

I love this perspective on the high level design thinking for the AT Proto. I hope this deck gets posted; it’s a great primer on why and how all this [waves hands vaguely] works behind the scenes. @dholms.xyz at #ATmosphereConf
Photo of a slide from a presentation:

Atproto Ethos

The Web: open, permissionless, universal, interconnected data

Peer to Peer: location independent data, self certifying data, skepticism of centralization

Distributed Systems: split read and write mode, application aware indices, microservices, eventual consistency, stream processing

Identity based authority, structure gives freedom, split generic hosting from application, lazy trust

"Sometimes talking to Eddie is just like dropping a stone in a well, except that it doesn't thump when it hits bottom." Edward Hopper sounds like a pretty reserved and shy guy ... but one does not simply paint a smoking clown at a Parisian cafe without drawing from a bottomless well of weird.
Edward Hoppers "Soir Blue" from 1914. It's a scene of people drinking at little tables at a cafe in Paris. Chinese lanterns hang above. Everyone is painted in muted and darker tones, except for a standing waitress with red cheeks and a BALD SMOKING CLOWN in bright white face paint, bright red makeup, and puffy white outfit. The clown appears to be hanging out with two otherwise normal looking dudes.

I guess an old dog can learn new tricks? 15 year old Peat is totally baffled that 45 year old Peat is super into Franz Kline. I'm just a boy, standing in front of a painting, trying to figure out WTF changed in me, because the paintings sure didn't change. ❤️
Franz Kline's "Black, White, and Gray" from 1959. An abstract painting with (unsurprisingly) black, white, and gray forms. There are distinct forms within the composition, but also quite a bit of gradients and softer edges, unlike "Mahoning" (the other painting in this skeet)Franz Kline's "Mahoning" from 1956, an abstract and angular set of thick black brush strokes against a white background.

... If it ain't Baroque, don't fix it. There's a gallery of Dutch shitpainting at the Met ... right next to all of the other lovely and idyllic period pieces you expect from the earnest church-centric art of the time.
"The Smokers" by Adriaen Brouwer who enjoyed trolling his austere and idyllic contemporaries. Brouwer painted himself into the scene -- he's the surprised dude in the middle.

A frame from the movie “They Live” wherein our ruggedly handsome and very muscular protagonist, who happens to be sporting the most flowingly magnificent 80s mullet, opens a magazine that simply says: BUY and DO NOT QUESTION AUTHORITY

(If you’re thinking OMG this movie totally ripped off Shepard Fairey … you know, the OBEY sticker artist who went on to do that famous Obama screen print? Well, you have it the other way around. I mean, I can’t fault the guy, and I think his WWF choice of lionizing Andre instead of Roddy was a good one.)

Anyway.

Our extremely tore up protagonist goes on to fight a bunch of fucking aliens and teach them Some Shit in a sophisticated allegory about his personal disillusionment with the American Dream, the disenfranchisement of the middle class, and the dismantling of the social contract at the hands of billionaire motherfuckers in pursuit of power and wealth.

There isn’t any particular reason I’m watching this tonight. No, I’m not lonely and angry about (waves hands) All This Fuckery.

Go watch some Zizek and get back to me.

Reply with 😎 if you got this far. Peace. ✌️

Honestly, one of the best parts of OG Dune is the quilted interiors. Alt text for commentary beyond 300 chars.
A screenshot from the 1983 David Lynch “Dune” movie. Detective Dale Cooper and Jean-Luc Picard are sitting behind a couple of other guys wearing prototype puffy jackets. Pretty sure Patagonia and North Face watched this for product inspiration. Everyone looks concerned about important things. They are surrounded by gold vinyl diamond quilted wall coverings. They look serious and worried. If I found myself in a small room with diamond vinyl wall padding I would also be serious and worried. The guys sitting in front of our Twin Peaks/Star Trek heroes appear to be wrestling with some unfortunate plumbing that controls the ornithopter they are riding in. Anyway. It’s complicated and from the 80s.
