I remember waking up on my first day of vacation between jobs, after finishing up my clerkship in the downtown SDNY courthouse, turning on the TV, and seeing NY1 break away from morning local coverage to note that a plane had just crashed into the North Tower of the WTC. (Reposting as thread 1/13)

There’s a reason New Yorkers, who were the most affected on 9-11, were against the Iraq war. Why they remain progressive, welcome immigrants, elected a Muslim mayor. New Yorkers know what it means to suffer, to be in community with and see the humanity in our neighbours.

I remember that in that moment, I do not think we were very afraid. That may not seem right to people who weren’t there. But as we came together and we worried and grieved we loved each other and we wanted to help.

The TV in the bar was on. All day we sat together and watched TV. We New Yorkers. More dust covered people who had walked all the way from downtown wandered in from time to time.

I remember a bar was open. With electricity. Was the electricity out? Why does that seem relevant? I don’t remember. There was no food. No deliveries to the island that day. Most bars and restaurants didn’t open. This one had beer though.

I remember walking south on 8th St. Just to see. Could I help. I remember running into my friend coming north. Covered in dust. He said there’s nothing to see. They won’t let you in.

I remember walking to the Mt Sinai West to help, to donate blood. I remember the crowd of hundreds or thousands of New Yorkers outside the hospital, all wanting to help. I gave my name and skills and blood type to someone. I remember feeling useless, with all my credentials and none could help.

I remember calling my mom and sister (on a landline of course) debating if I should because it was 6-something am their time, to say “Hey, may not be an issue, but just so you know, no one you love is near the WTC this morning. I’m not working downtown any more.”

I remember NY1 newscasters and and me realizing around the same time that although it looked small because the towers were so big, it wasn’t a little Cessna flown by an amateur idiot, but a commercial plane. Huh.

I hear about making America great again, and I hear folks being nostalgic for the 1990’s. In the 90’s, there was no ICE. There was the Immigration and Naturalization Service-INS. It was run under the Department of Labor, to protect American workers. Replace ICE with INS. Bring back the INS.
