it’s actually wild that, as far as i know, there’s nothing about anticovid activism on wikipedia. no mask blocs, no clean air clubs, very little mention of organized guerilla pro-social public health at all thus far.

There are many people, including children, that have been excluded from society because they are in a group that is known to be more at risk of serious outcomes from COVID-19. Instead of providing safer places and people to interact with, they are mocked and excluded further.

“Did you wear a mask before Covid?” Is not the gotcha people think it is. Covid changed things. We have a multi system vascular virus circulating at high levels year round. Covid taught us about airborne transmission & how effective respirators are. I wish I had worn them in the before times!

We must normalize masks as a public health tool before it’s too late. If you care about social justice, disability rights, fighting fascism or your health… you should be wearing a mask. Ideally an N95 or better. The more of us wearing them, the harder they will be to ban.

If you’re not fighting against mask bans because you think they “only” apply to those committing crimes… consider the following: Who decides who’s committing a crime? The police. POC who mask will be disproportionately targeted. Who decides if your medical exemption is “good enough”? Police 🧵

fyi, this is on their website
What (Not) to Wear/Bring
Wear a mask. This has always been good practice at protests, and is even better practice now. Protect yourself (and others!) from COVID-19, other viruses (measles?!?!?!?), and pepper spray by wearing a medical-grade mask.

Note: If your city or state has banned masks at protests, please proceed with caution. Many of these regulations stipulate that masks are banned for the purpose of “concealing identity,” but that’s not why you should wear one. A mask keeps you–and the people around you–safe ❤️

It’s really hard for me as a disabled person to engage seriously with any of the calls to action around what’s happening bc of the very real trauma of being abandoned by the same people to fend for myself against the conditions that disabled me in the first place.

Ed Yong is such a real one <3 www.nytimes.com/2025/02/22/m...
You’ve been clear in saying that Covid has not gone away. You ask people to wear masks at your events. But that attitude is not necessarily where the rest of the world is. How do you think about continuing to take precautions and advising others to do so when it feels as if society has moved on? I do it for a bunch of reasons. Firstly, I have learned that I enjoy not being sick. I know that the cost of long Covid is real and substantial, and I don’t want to run that risk lightly. I also know that I have many friends and people I’m close to who are immunocompromised. So for the sake of the people around me, I also don’t want to get sick. When I do events, I wear a mask for those reasons, and because I know that every time I do a talk, while the vast majority of people in the audience have probably moved on, there are going to be other people who haven’t. I think it makes a huge difference to them to have the person at the front of the stage wear a mask. It tells them, It’s not weird. So I do it for that reason, too. In terms of holding this line at a point when a large swath of society has moved on, I have written a lot about the panic-neglect cycle.

If you’re opposed to fascism, please make sure you’re working on internalized ableism. The link between fascism, eugenics and ableism is well documented. Fight for disability rights. Make resistance efforts accessible. Wear a mask & stay home when sick. Don’t leave us behind.

Disabled patients have a right to safe healthcare. When we ask staff to mask, we aren’t “entitled”. We’re advocating for our lives. We’re trying to protect our baseline. We’re asking for the respect we deserve. We can’t “just stay home” from the hospital. Masks should be mandatory.
