It then goes on to detail Dennis Wilson out of the Beach Boys bio. Reader, it was not THAT Dennis Wilson

Re-visiting Fleming's Bond novels, he regularly mentions characters 'sunburned', 'sunburnt' 'burnt and burned by the sun'. Never meaning what we understand today, red, raw, he means tanned, dark or brown, a healthy glow. Was this a general switch or just Fleming? @susiedentwords.bsky.social #Bond

But you just can't do this in film. The closest you can get, is to have a patsy stand next to the card table explaining to a second patsy what the rules are, in a clunking chunk of exposition that sticks out like a dog turd on a bowling green. [8]

Give him less and he can give you so much more. When Dent is grilled by an unseen Dr No in the reception room this is Adams at his best. But the scene that nails Bond perfectly, and transfers it from novel to film to a tee is at the start. The card game that introduces Bond to the world. [5]

Speaking of Modern, Ken Adams is defining the look of Bond, and especially Bond villainy from the start. Dr No's underground lair is a disappointment, I doubt the budget of a new film would have stretched to what Adams wanted to do, it looks small, confused, not the space described in the novel.[4]

Decades later I think it holds up much better than I gave it credit for. Yes it definitely lacks the pizzazz that came to represent cinematic Bond. The car 'chase' is dodgy back-projection and one corner re-used three times... Ooof! But there are things I didn't clock as a boy.
Sean Connery in the car 'chase' in Dr No, back projection abounds!

We have confirmation. It's a belter, revisit it every few years.
A very tired paperback copy of Don't Cry for me Seargent Major, by Robert McGowan and Jeremy HandsThere is little love lost between the Marines and the

Commando were concerned for Guards to start leap-
frogging through their position.
Afterwards 40 told stories of guardsmen coming
ashore with polythene bags over their boots, holding
umbrellas aloft. They are unsubstantiated. But beyond
doubt is the fact that the Guards had come to war direct
from a long period of ceremonial duties in London,
and were hardly in the same fighting-fit condition as
the Marines.
One guardsman had to stop and rest on his bergan
after walking less than a quarter of a mile.
'Why didn't you bring your fucking polo ponies?
yelled a Marine, adding to his mate as he took his arm,
'come on, Cynthia, must wush or the cucumber sand-
wiches will go orf.'
The crew Of Canberra later revealed that the Guards
had done little of the physical training on board that
the Marines and Paras had done, but had mooned
about all day complaining if lunch was late.
The Marines were dissuaded from getting too close
to the Guards as they came ashore, lest remarks such
as those led to reprisals.
'Go on, fuck off, Woodentops,' called another Marine,
using the familiar Army slang for the Brigade of
Guards. 'You might find a few pretty sheep left."
40 Commando were left to their solitude, with
Colonel Hunt stoically announcing, "Well, if this is the
job we've got to do, we'l do it to the best of our ability.
Nobody will find us lacking. But they won't find us
happy either.'
The Gurkhas, meanwhile, had the task of clearing
