I don't wanna COUCH my words here: I know JD Vance, his eyeliner, and absent Ashley Moody are used to running away from people when things get tough because they care more about themselves and their billionaire buddies than the people they represent. But this is my home. /1

People who call large meetings (like dean's office who called the DGS meeting I’m currently in) should have to calculate the dollar value of everyone’s time when deciding each and every agenda item.

Trump has made a career of pushing back the consequences of his actions until either the clock runs out or they no longer matter. The proposed ban on diesel exports might bring prices down between now and the mid-term elections. But all hell will break loose after that.

Once again, the AI expertise revolution (in medicine, education, etc) is about reducing the number of experts necessary but not replacing them completely. That way, capital can lower payroll and exploit the resultant tiered market. Humans for the wealthy; AI for everyone else.
but the masses in “economy class” would mostly make do with AI alone

For my non-cycling friends, Pogacar is the number one pro cyclist in the world and probably the greatest of all time. 2X world champ. 5X TdF winner. This year, he is on track to earn the equivalent of a mid-tier basketball player in the US.

I'm an invader baby. So are my cousins, some of whom voted for this. The difference is my family are ostensibly white invader babies. My cousins think this too, which is why they're immigrants who are ok with these anti-immigrant sentiments. Whiteness is a hell of a drug.

I'd be willing to bet that most of the difference in crash rates between Waymos and human drivers can be explained by the fact that Waymos drive under the speed limit.

My family routinely watches The Amazing Race. It’s been interesting to watch how early season racers did just fine with paper maps. Later seasons saw paper maps become part of the race challenge. Same with driving manual, FWIW.

Chicago needs a citywide network of protected bike lanes. We shouldn't have to rely on ward by ward protections, which results in both inequitable infrastructure distribution and safety gaps on longer trips.

This thread is ultimately the correct take on "class." However, I think we need to distinguish between technical definitions, like how sociologists define, operationalize, and use it, and vernacular uses of the term, like how people describe other people. The latter is worth studying sui generis.

Regardless of what actually happens with arresting and charging Obama, this administration will have succeeded in delegitimizing the DOJ and the investigative process into office holders. That will help them if they're charged and tried in the future.

The problem with AI is that it's marketed as Artificial *General* Intelligence so there's no use that's off-label. It's a huge liability issue for companies that make the technology. I fear we'll have lots more cases of people hurt by AI in various ways before we see any legal clarity.

Status is absolutely the skeleton key to understanding MAGA. And this is why there should be a Chief Sociologist of the US, not just a Chief Economic Advisor: economists don't have the analytic tools to study status (tho they won't admit it); sociologists invented the study of status, it's our jam.

I assume Schumer, Jeffries, and the rest of the Dem establishment are just waiting out the time until the next election, thinking "the fever will break" when they win back majorities and we'll just go back to politics as usual. Spoiler: we're way to far gone for politics as usual.

Hyper local skeet: Harper Court should be closed to car traffic. I'd bet restaurants and shops would survive, even strive, if we turned the area into a promenade. As of now, we get a lot of turnover because it's not a nice place to linger: www.hpherald.com/evening_dige...

This is actually a problem for industry. Auto companies plan their production runs years if not decades in advance. They actually rely on gov't standards and regulation to create certainty in the market. Rapid deregulation for manufacturing makes it very difficult to plan. 1/n
