📚 New study on #Kenya by @pbiscaye.bsky.social @eggerdennis.bsky.social & Utz Pape When schools reopened after #COVID closures, parents worked more, because kids had less time for farm work. Adults filled the gap, while richer households hired labor. 🔎 Read more: t.ly/wzH7g 📄 #econdev #school

Bonus of working late is I am much less annoyed about being called by my almost three year to put her blanket back on her because she is cold than if I had already been asleep. I get to enjoy a sweet parental moment instead of mentally grumbling that she can put her own damn blanket back on 😆

Why not a 211 team tournament??They could even have the preliminary rounds organized by continental league, to reduce travel - and allow more host nations to get in on it! Maybe then the top few teams from those tournaments could meet in some sort of final tournament in a rotating host country… 🤔🤦‍♂️

Do other parents with 2(+) kids find it less hard when they get sick both at once or back to back? Both at once is super hard on everyone but over quicker. Back to back is easier to manage in some ways but draining and disruptive and I always end up sick too. Of course, we don't get to choose. Wooh!

I've posted several times about the working paper, but the publication on "AER: Insights" is a good occasion to do it again: immigrants to the US have been less likely to be incarcerated for over 50 years **even without controlling for demographic characteristics.** www.aeaweb.org/articles?id=...
Law-Abiding Immigrants: The Incarceration Gap between Immigrants and the US-Born, 1870–2020†
By Ran Abramitzky, Leah Boustan, Elisa Jácome,
Santiago Pérez, and Juan David Torres*
We provide the first nationally representative long-run series (1870–2020) of incarceration rates for immigrants and the US-born. As a group, immigrants have had lower incarceration rates than the US-born for 150 years. Moreover, relative to the US-born, immigrants’ incarceration rates have declined since 1960: immigrants today are 60 percent less likely to be incarcerated (30 percent relative to US-born Whites). This relative decline occurred among immigrants from all regions and cannot be explained by changes in observable characteristics or immigration policy. Instead, the decline is part of a broader divergence of outcomes between less-educated immigrants and their US-born counterparts.Panels plotting incarceration rates for immigrants and US-born men between 1870 and 2019. Data are restricted to males ages 18–40. Data spanning 1870–1940 are from the full-count decennial censuses. Data spanning 1950–1990 are from the largest available subsamples from the corresponding decennial censuses. Data from 2005 onward are from the annual ACS. Cross markers indicate that fewer than 10,000 immigrants were used to calculate the corresponding incarceration rate. Panel A compares US-born men to all immigrants. Panels B–F compare US-born men to immigrants from a particular country-of-origin group. “Old Europeans” are immigrants from countries in the north and west of Europe. “New Europeans” are immigrants from countries in eastern and southern Europe. The “Rest of the world” category includes immigrants from countries not included in panels B–F.
Migrants typically show lower incarceration ratesaccounting for individual-level characteristics, migrants as a group or by subgroups (old Europeans, new Europeans, Chinese, Mexicans and Central Americans, or Rest of the World) are incarcerated at lower rates

Key takeaway: ↗️ long-term conflict means negative ag shocks have worse consequences than previously understood. Permanent income ↘️ appears to be the mechanism   Moving forward: 1️⃣ HH survey data on wealth, productivity to dig more into mechs 2️⃣ Role of aid/institutions in mitigating conflict ↗️ 12/13

Is there something unique about desert locusts? No! Severe drought exposure leads to similar long-run increases in violent conflict risk. Methods estimating temporary effects of economic shocks on conflict with FE models may thus underestimate impacts.   11/13
000
Pierre Biscaye @pbiscaye.bsky.social · 01/12/2023
This explains why the largest impacts of swarm exposure are delayed. 73% of exposure was in the 2003-2005 locust outbreak, but violent conflict incidence was low in these countries until ~2010 due to food price shocks, Arab Spring, Islamic militant groups, etc.   10/13
000
Pierre Biscaye @pbiscaye.bsky.social · 01/12/2023
This reduction in productivity-consistent with a wealth or permanent income mechanism-means the opportunity cost of fighting is lower. But conflict risk only increases in years with violent conflict in surrounding cells: when there are opportunities to fight.   9/13
000
Pierre Biscaye @pbiscaye.bsky.social · 01/12/2023
Why does a one-time production shock persistently increase conflict risk? Although locust swarms do not return, I find that affected cells have 108 kg/ha lower cereal yields on average post-exposure, similar to the effect of a 1 degree C temp increase.   8/13
000
Pierre Biscaye @pbiscaye.bsky.social · 01/12/2023
Estimates weighted by the inverse of the estimated probability of swarm exposure give a 0.8pp avg increase in annual risk of violent conflict after exposure, driven entirely by ag land, particularly crop cells. This greatly exceeds effects of same year rainfall or temp ⬆️s!   7/13
