Some might be wondering why the x-axis on the graph goes to 1875. It is because the watermain under Slater St are 151 years old!

@sjamieit.bsky.social has posted similar graphs before but it bears repeating. There are a LOT of watermains approaching end of life in 15-20 years. This wave of liabilities is beyond the 10-yr planning horizon, so naturally, council hasn't budgeted for it and is even defering maintenance.

Over the past year, I've tracked watermain breaks across the city. The average age of breaks is 60 years old. This is concerning because (1) watermains are expected to last 80 - 100 years, and (2) we have a LOT of pipes that are about to turn 60 years old 🎂 2/

Another watermain break and sink hole. You can explore the age of our city's pipes using this interactive map. bickertonpa.github.io/Ottawa-Water... The pipes in question appear to be from 1967, making them 59 years old. 1/

There have been no internal communication between the Mayor, OCTranspo, the City Manager, or Metrolinx about the LRT upload to the Province. The guy in charge of this doesn't sound very effecrive. (Not my MFIPPA)

Thanks but just to note the letter includes name and address in that letter. I suggest deleting this post and replacing it with a marked up version with name and address blacked out. I've done it here.

I got a response to my Freedom of Information request regarding the LRT upload: There were no communications between the OCTranspo head, the mayor, the city manager or Metrolinx re the upload from March 1st to 26 September 2026. There is no $4 billion deal with the province.

Shocked. Shocked, I say. How could this have happened? The water main there under O'Connor Street is only 123 years old (1903). Practically brand new! /s I'm sure the city was hoping to kick that can down the road for at least another decade. It's not even on the planned 5 year construction map.

Broken water main soaks O'Connor and Albert streets in downtown Ottawa | CBC News
A broken water main at a downtown Ottawa intersection filled the vicinity with water and is forcing lane closures on nearby roads on Monday morning.

The Dutch Reach method is a simple habit that could make a big difference for cyclists. When you’re ready to open your car door, use your opposite hand. This naturally turns your body, helping you check your blind spot for cyclists before opening the door. Learn more at: halifax.ca/roadsafety

Wow. Look at how they "fixed" it. What I reported was a clogged drain on the fountain. Rather than actually unclogging the drain they just disconnected the pipe inside so that it leaks out onto the ground.

The city zoned these homes to allow for commercial use in a residential area and it's just ruined the whole neighbourhood! People are out on a Friday night at the wine bar and eating Vietnamese food on the patio! That patio probably used to be a parking spot that we've now lost forever! Horrifying.

July 1 flood. Sure, it was unprecedented rainfall but I'm curious whether all storm and wastewater infrastructure worked as intended. I bring this up because @mark-sutcliffe.bsky.social and Council voted to DEFER $2.3-billion of needed water, waste a storm infrastructure over the next 10 yrs!

Found a lucky penny while opening up a basement wall after the flood. In all seriousness, this is a lucky penny. We only had clean water come in.

And also, how is the city hoping to inforce a 2 x garbage can limit for construction materials at condo townhomes where everyone places there garbage together for a common pickup. </rant>

Pat Bickerton @pbickerton.bsky.social · 05/07/2026
Another benefit of dumpters is that residents - not garbage collectors - would lift the items into the bin. 2/

Pat Bickerton @pbickerton.bsky.social · 05/07/2026
I also asked if dumpsters was a viable option. The response I received was that the city was concerned that people would abuse them by putting in non-storm related garbage 🙄. People are litetally living in houses caked in s***. I mean, come on. 1/

While this is not everyone's situation, I was in a neighbour's home with 2 ft of raw sewage. They are new parents, money is tight, and their insurance payment bounced last month and they had put off renewing it. Sure, that's their decision. But come on. Have a heart.

Infrastructure coordination will become increasingly important as pipes and roads in outer urban and suburban neighbourhoods reach end of life at the same time.

Councillor Kelly wants to know if this 10 year funding plan will address the backlog in road maintenance by asking a simple question, will the roads be in better or worse condition in 10 years. Staff with a complete non-answer:

There is a quiet project increase footprint at NDHQ Carling Campus by +5,000 employees by 2034. This needs to be on the City's Radar and transit needs to the part of the equation.

The City of Ottawa posted the raw speed data from before and after Doug Ford banned speed cameras and the effect is so obvious it's not even necessary put a line marking when that happened. This chart shows the percentage of drivers going 15km/h or more over the posted limit.

That's the problem with using ambiguous language like "peak hours". You would think that peak hours would mean the peak hours of congestion; but it doesn't. Instead, the city means 7-9 am northbound, and 3-5 pm sounthbound. In the Glebe, these are NOT the peak hours on congestion

Pat Bickerton @pbickerton.bsky.social · 09/04/2026
Thanks for replying. The wording about the reduced hours of time-of-day bus lanes was confusing at best, verging on sneaky. This should have been debated at PWIC, or at the very least Council.

Appreciate your reply Sean, but it sounds like we're reading different things between those lines. That's my point. There are some well intentioned things in the motion (pending funding, of course), but the reduced hrs and lack of ANY discussion or consultation was a kick in pants. I don't like it.

It has taken more than 4 years to get a 'pilot project' passed, which actually won't start until next year, and really all that 'pilot project' does is change some signs — we're supposed to be impressed that such a feat was even possible.
