As project lead, it was a privilege to see so many people come together at the launch - including some of the grant recipients - which was part of the annual Association of Caribbean Historians conference. A huge thank you to High Commissioner Alicia Herbert OBE for hosting us so warmly.

When someone claims that AI can just read all digitized history and discover new things, they should be required to catalog one of the many boxes full of random 17th century papers left over from a chancery case.

In memory of the thousands of enslaved Africans who lost their lives, this 1751 list from Cape Coast Castle is a stark reminder to look beyond the numbers of the trade and emphasise the personhood of each individual enslaved for European gain. Today, we centre them.

We were honoured to be guided through the castle by the Director of Ghana Museums and Monuments Board, who we presented with a 1756 plan from The National Archives - a powerful reminder that records must be paired with material heritage and local knowledge to better understand our shared history.

Call for Papers! The British Commission for #MaritimeHistory will hold their 30th annual New Researchers conference at Hull in April 2025. It has THE BEST supportive environment for new scholars (also including independent) I've ever been to. www.maritimehistory.org.uk/news/items/c...
The British Commission for Maritime History (BCMH) invites contributions to its 30th Conference for New Researchers in Maritime History.

The conference will be held in Hull, a port-city that ranked as the third busiest commercial port in Britain, and one of Europe’s largest fishing harbours. Today, as well as continuing to engage in various sea-related activities, Hull is leveraging its significant maritime heritage, through the refurbishment of six historic sites and two preserved ships, to market itself as Yorkshire’s Maritime City. It therefore provides an inspiring location for a conference that focuses on the maritime dimensions of history.

The Conference, which is supported by the Society for Nautical Research and University of Hull Maritime History Trust, is designed to enable those in the early stages of their research careers to present their ideas, plans and findings to an informed and enthusiastic audience, and to build relations with other maritime historians. We warmly encourage applications from postgraduate students and independent scholars, whose contributions can address any aspect of maritime history in its broadest sense.

Paper Submissions

Those wishing to offer a paper should fill in and submit an application via this Google Form by 20 January 2025.
