Update: Today’s catastrophic flood along the Nepal-Tibet border was initially suspected to be a glacial lake outburst flood (GLOF). But new satellite analysis points instead to a massive glacier collapse and ice-rock avalanche that blocked a river before unleashing a devastating surge. 1/

In other words, a *relatively* warm or cool year in the global-mean doesn't give a great deal of information for many regions as to whether that year will be locally relatively warm or cool. Of course an *absolutely* warm year (i.e., with the trends) does – that map is basically red everywhere.

Interannual variability in global mean temperature is most strongly related to temperatures in the tropics, here shown by correlating detrended global and gridpoint temperatures. There is very little relationship with temperatures over Europe and many parts of Asia.

In theory the point the sun is highest in the sky should be at noon (12 pm). However due to daylight saving and countries like China with only one time zone noon can actually be as late as 3pm. This #dataviz shows the sun's highest point in the day as the year progresses.

In the 2010s, the Icelandic tv station Channel 2 accidentally added subtitles from a gritty crime drama to an episode of Teletubbies. I have translated some of the highlights
A screenshot of Lala and Po from the teletubbies. The screenshot is clearly taken from someone's phone, as the borders of the tv can be seen, as well as glimpses into the apartment behind them. Po is in bed wrapped up in a blanket. The text below them reads "I know you were high at my mother-in-laws funeral..."More screenshots from the Teletubbies. Lala seems to be upset with a terrified Po. the text below reads "Did you kill the dog? Why would you do that?!"A third screenshot from the Teletubbies, this time the same scene as before. Po is wearing an apron while Lala seems to still be upset at him. The text below reads "You're nothing but a failure of a man."

TIL about a memorial ceremony in Iceland in 2019 to mark the end of a glacier, changing the place name from Okjökull to Ok (jökull = glacier). Uncompromising wording on the bronze plaque: "This is to acknowledge that we know what is happening and what needs to be done. Only you know if we did it".
Bronze plaque saying "A Letter to the Future. Ok is the first Icelandic glacier to lose its status as a glacier. In the next 200 years all our glaciers are expected to follow the same path. This monument is to acknowledge that we know what is happening and what needs to be done. Only you know if we did it. August 2019. 415ppm CO2"
