Watching The Rivals Of Amziah King This is a wonderful: a shaggy dog bluegrass honey noir, with Matthew McConaughy as the beekeeping banjo player embroidered in stolen honey. He's great, the music fantastic and the turns it takes with co-lead Angelina LookingGlass are the definition of thrilling

Watching Forgotten Sweeties Not the most elegant of Charley Chase comedies but like most has a bravura sequence where he scares off the brutish jealous husband he's trapped with by drawing two ghosts on his feet. Also Anita Garvin one punches out said husband which is impressive

Watching A Season To Blossom A 'reconnecting with hometown ex' Hallmark where she inherits a failing bookstore and he runs a cider orchard. Sentimentally serious and filmed in February as the orchards look dead, but this becomes a plot point as climate crisis ruins the blossom season

Watching Sh! The Octopus Horror Of Fang Rock with an Octopus. Is the Octopus a nefarious super criminal gang leader, or an actual octi. Or both. Abbott And Costello level japery enhanced by not having Bud or Lou, its frenetic but has great effects and bonus points for using the one true plot

Watching The Moon And Back Sweet little griefer coming of age drama. After her Dad dies, Lydia discovers a schlocky sci-fi script he wrote and decides to make it for a school project. Pretty funny, hits the right notes and has a terrific central performance from Isabel May. Efficient at 74 minutes

Watching A Little Park Music She is the city manager tasked with removing a gazebo He's a new cop who tickets her for jaywalking Pianos start turning up in the gazebo, every time she tries to knock it down. Apparently mystery pianos are agin the law so they team up to discover who did it. Romance?

Watched Sleepway Camp Pre Camp Miasma viewing since it is such a core text.Whilst basicallyally a Friday 13th rip,it's fascinating to see the quotidian summer camp horrors of kids being mean, the embedded camp within the lousy acting, and that ending: obliterating its final girl in a fascinating way

Watching Return To Silent Hill This is on me,I've not liked any Silent Hill movies and the director of the first is back for more incoherent stringing together of videogame set pieces (creepy kids, spidercreatures, mazes) with a thoroughly tedious lead character. Like a terrible old school game movie

Watching In Gay Madrid Largely a rerun of Navarro's silent hit The Student Prince In Old Heidelberg, this has the quite gay Navarro as a philandering student sent to Santiago De Compostela where he won't get up to any mischief. He gets up to mischief

Watching The Isolate Thief Decent calling card Western where Mackenzie Foy is alone in a Union outpost at the end of the civil war.Joey Pants turns up and hides some gold which she finds, then Sean Bean and his soldiers turn up and battle of wits becomes battle of guns. Watched Adventures In Love And Birding A Hobby Hallmark starring Hallmark's Sally Field: Rachel Boston. Based on a book so there's more plot than usual: divorced teacher facing an empty nest, meets a twitcher who is trying to beat his his ex at spotting. Overestimates how competitive birdwatching is

Watched Deep Water Exactly the same plot as 24's No Way Up,plane crashes in the sea and gets bothered by sharks. Rennie Harlin has shark previous and does a great plane crash but then so-so survival. But again the moral is the US should make people retire younger. Ben Kingsley is an 82 year old pilot

Watching The Gay Desperado Why wasn't this part of the Ritrovato Rouben Mamoulian season. A Mexican operatic musical gangster parody where the Mexican gang boss loves gangster films and wants to be more like them, plus opera loving. Daft as a brush, light as a feather and with a dazzling Ida Lupino

Today in BBC News trying to gaslight us, they try to suggest that the Ringo Starr narrated Thomas The Tank Engine was a BBC show, rather than ITV where it actually premiered. What with this and Mack-Le-More, they are slowly chipping away at my sanity this week youtu.be/bntQp6uDoKI?...

Watching Man On The Run Sympathetic but forensic Paul McCartney in the 70's documentary which never wants you to believe that some of his output was rubbish, but you work that out for yourself. You're happy they're happy, and there is an arc. Sod's law that it's defined by Lennon's killing though

Watching Romance Retreat Workaholic journo goes on a yoga retreat with her boyf but he dumps her because of the workaholisms. She falls for another yogi whilst solving a crime and mugging broad comedy. Such as "What's behind your back?" "My farts." made me laugh much more than I expected.

Watching House By The River Fritz Lang makes a Republic potboiler, say it ain't so. Victorian curtains a-twitching in this not very psychological or thrilling thriller about the murder of a maid and the brother that covered it up. Nuance is for namby pambies, though it has a hell of a final scene

Watching Rosebush Pruning Spoilt rich kids all lusting after each other (particularly Jamie Bell's eldest brother Jack) and hating on Jack's gf Elle Fanning.Mum was killed by wolves (or was she),incestuous hand and blow jobs to the Pet Shop Boys before it gets murdery. Watched The Roses There's something deep in the filmmaking that makes this not work, the time it takes for the relationship to go sour, too many supporting characters played by funny people not being funny. The shape is wrong so the black humour falls apart despite C&C spitting the lines with relish

Watching Not So Dumb Love, love, love Marion Davies, and here in this proto screwball she shows her verbal dexterity, but boy this script is a charmless stinker. Marion's Dulcy thinks she's a master manipulator but her non-stop gabbing messes it all up, but also means she's annoying to us too

Watching The Shocking Miss Pilgrim The heart's in the right place for this typewriter / women's suffrage picture but the songs, who knew George and Ira Gershwin's scraping barrel had sub-basements. This poster appears to have Betty on the phone which does not appear in the film as it is set in 1874

Watching Old Yeller This has been quoted as the gold standard tear jerker, the kids film that devastated a generation..I mean I'm not a dog person but it's just a long prelude to Kindergarten Cujo. Wasn't shown in the UK as it didn't make rabies look as scary as our Public Information Films did

Watching 20,000 Leagues Under The Sea Genuinely disconcerting to see someone who isn't John Wayne fighting a giant squid.Mason's Nemo is properly majestic and sinister, Douglas's Ned feels like he's from the 1940's navy. Episodic but impressive racism notwithstanding:Form stands up,content is shaky

Watching The Odyssey Why Musk and the sadbois got nuts about Nolan's Odyssey, when The Asylum made an all white pisspoor version for them I don't know. The story is more or less there but imagine the whole thing done with a cast of 8 - one being a very chatty Athena. One suitor, three shipmates

Watching De Gaulle: Resistance The first part of a De Gaulle diptych goes to just before D-Day, but has secret sauce:it is more than happy to show how silly its titular character could be. Watching Marry Harry Fascinating unapologetic chamber musical that makes a lot out of its single set, and chorus. Comes out of the blocks singing and feels like the right way to adapt a small off broadway show. Songs are fine though it's short a banger and the plot is inconsequential. But it works
