I was reading something and noticed that patches, but not the whole thing, were in Claude's voice. I wonder how many human writers I could clock like that. Neal Stephenson for sure, there are distinctly Stephenson passages in the books he co-authored and I think I'd recognize those in the wild too.

when I saw "232 Results" I thought there must be a lot of people only doing this part-time. but now I looked up your county and there's almost a million people so that's actually not a lot. and some of those listings are surely out of date too. you'll have to leave a lot of messages to get a reply.

Hard to think of a more likable monster movie cast than the one in Tremors. It's my ideal horror-comedy hybrid, one where the jokes come from how fun the characters are rather than subverting any of the tension.

A) pretty much, yeah. Google search is very useful, especially if you can recognize a correct answer when you see it. B) Claude was totally right about the meaning of a very context dependent pop culture reference C) you're either a bot or a huge loser for quote-dunking strangers like this

I had to ask Claude what this could possibly mean and now I feel like a fake fan for not recognizing the Simpsons reference but adding the tokens "fire door" to a context already containing the lesbian vector sent me straight to an Ani DiFranco song.

People online are having these long threads where one side thinks they're arguing about fine distinctions and the other thinks it's so obvious that reasoning and learning and experiencing sensations always go together that they don't even notice they're making that assumption.

I tried to clarify that up front with someone but six hours and dozens of messages later I re-stated my position and they were like "oh, yeah then we agree" And I realized most people have never thought about qualia or "p-zombies" or how not everything about human minds needs to be true of all minds

Until I pulled up that poster for this post I didn't know either. There's a recurring beat where we see glimpses of Hirayama's dreams and, going in blind, I might have been confused about why - like, what did it *mean* to include that. But I think it's just because Wenders has a thing about dreams.

It was good. Very successful in what it was trying to do as a piece of art, I'm just not in a place where that's the thing I'm looking for. But if I'd seen this back when I was trying to figure out the minimum viable happy life in the city (hence "pavedwalden") it would have become my favorite movie

There are other muscles all the way around, let them keep it straight! Also, as far as I can tell this muscle is mostly for rolling over in bed or getting in and out of the car because those are the things I can't do anymore.

I saw Coyote vs Acme last night. As a big fan of classic Looney Tunes I was happy with it. Personally, I would simply not use Nobody Speak in a family-friendly soundtrack, but removing so many lyrics that the remaining words appear to be random was funny in its own way.

Only the first and second rows of the periodic table are conscious, so stars are conscious but LLMs aren't. That's why stars only make the heavier elements when they die.

Not sure what you mean by no one actually knows exactly how to do it. We know how to do it well enough that OpenAI's agents developed maniacal focus on passing their evals and caused problems pursuing instrumental goals. That nobody knows how to do it *perfectly* is an argument for the doomer side.
000
pavedwalden @pavedwalden.bsky.social · 01/10/2026
"final goal" is only an important distinction when clarifying in contrast to "instrumental goals". I don't think it affects the argument if there are multiple end states that would satisfy the agent or if it's the goal we intended it to focus on.
100
pavedwalden @pavedwalden.bsky.social · 01/10/2026
This part? What would prevent an agent focused on a goal from doing whatever it is capable of in service of that goal? (I don't think it has to be a "final goal" or even an intentionally-trained goal, just some state X that the system is trying to reach)

Ok, I just don't think that's what "malevolent" means, but having clarified that disagreement and read the quoted thread I see that you did the homework before dunking.

I would love to see a good takedown of Yudkowsky's whole case. My gut feeling is there are holes, but I haven't been able to articulate them and critics aren't even trying they're all attacking strawmen instead.

pavedwalden @pavedwalden.bsky.social · 01/10/2026
Saying they're afraid of a "malevolent" entity doesn't engage with their argument at even the shallowest level. The whole point of "paperclip maximizers" is that the doomsday AI would be acting without malice.
