Paul Tagliamonte @pault.ag · 18/09/2026notes.pault.ag/why-write/ while not my usual programming fare, this has been in the back of my head for a while. I have finally put some words down after re-reading some 1940s era philosophical writing I couldn't let go of. please enjoy with post with the love and intent I have imparted on it.notes.pault.agWhy Write?Jean-Paul Sartre, 1947 030

Paul Tagliamonte @pault.ag · 08/09/2026I very much hope someone out there reads this and feels a push to look into this work -- it's been a great deal of fun and I've learned a lot by doing it! 010
Paul Tagliamonte @pault.ag · 08/09/2026It's been an adventure filled with a lot of fits and starts -- the time to first data transmitted over the air was weeks/days of work back in 2022, but fixing all the systemic bugs and ironing out concepts took longer (also, a bunch of life events in the mix too!). 120
Paul Tagliamonte @pault.ag · 08/09/2026After 4 (long) years, I can finally make good on my promises to revisit building a DIY Layer 1 & 2 with my SDRs. I've been calling it 'pigeon' (using my RF library sparky). I've written down as much as I could and have just hit publish on a now 4-year old draft (now 16 posts) at k3xec.com/pigeon/k3xec.compigeon: my experimental PHY (Part 0/12) 🕊️I'm going to build a network transport! Again! 122
Paul Tagliamonte @pault.ag · 02/04/2026GitHub back to two nines of uptime from only one, lets gooo .... wait not like that 020
Paul Tagliamonte @pault.ag · 27/03/2026Due to life decisions, I use my SDRs over the network with my own protocol. Existing programs don't support it, so it was high time to do what any normal person would do -- convincingly implement librtlsdr .so off my rust sdr codebase (sparky) and make it work. Obviously k3xec.com/sparky-rtlsdr/ 012
Paul Tagliamonte @pault.ag · 02/02/2026I had a bit of an own-goal in picking a 20 minute form-factor, so the talk is paced wrong (it feels like it went way too fast). Hopefully being able to see the slides and pause the video is helpful. 010
Paul Tagliamonte @pault.ag · 02/02/2026I've posed my slides and linked to the video recording from my talk "Paging All Radio Curious Hackers!" at @districtcon.bsky.social Year 1 just now at k3xec.com/paging-all-r... All in all, the session was great - It was truly humbling to see so many folks interested in hearing me talk about radios.k3xec.comPaging all Radio Curious Hackers 112

Paul Tagliamonte @pault.ag · 16/06/2025We know we can't scale this. We can't even get all our friends on the LAN. I don't know how long that will take -- nevermind letting anyone outside that group in. However -- this is my call for you to do the same. Build your own LAN. Connect it with friends’ homes. Have fun with computers. 111
Paul Tagliamonte @pault.ag · 16/06/2025We’ve grown our own culture and fads - around half of the people on the LAN have thermal receipt printers with open access, for printing out quips or jokes on each other’s counters. There’s a 3-node IRC network, exotic hardware to gawk at, LAN only email, and even a SIP phone network of redphones. 111
Paul Tagliamonte @pault.ag · 16/06/2025 We can freely host insecure game servers or one-off side projects without worrying about what someone will do with it. 111
Paul Tagliamonte @pault.ag · 16/06/2025In December of 2021, three of us got together and connected our houses together. The idea is simple - fill the hole we feel is gone from our lives. Build our own always-on 24/7 nonstop LAN party. Build a space that is intrinsically social, even though we’re doing technical things. 121
Paul Tagliamonte @pault.ag · 16/06/2025After around 4 years, I wrote down a manifesto for a project a handful of us participate in called "The Promised LAN". 1134
