My first #WednesdayWIPs. Working on a maleness poetry collab w/ @paulrobertmullen82.bsky.social. Pages of raw notes like this, no structure, just fragments. If you’re stuck in the same place: I get it. Keep going. #WhatAreYouWorkingOn
A typed draft poem in free verse. It begins: “Chords beat a retreat / Thighs tighten / I’m smashing the cage.” Other lines include: “Tire tracks through birds on the bypass,” “Write & cross out her name over and over,” and “All you can do is wait / Until you can rip off your shirt & scream.” Refrains of “wait” recur throughout, with imagery of justice, apologies, rain, gold, and the turning of hands. The poem feels raw, restless, and unfinished. An orange graphic with a halftone illustration of a hand holding a pen. The text reads: “#WednesdayWIPs What are you working on?” In the bottom corner is The Broken Spine logo.

to be beautiful forever William Bronk
FOR AN EARLY ITALIAN MUSICIAN

Listening now to his music, how
one wishes to have been the musician, and so
to be beautiful forever as his music is,
and he in it, who is now
only his music, which is his world.

How one always wishes for an end
— to be complete.

And there is also this:
that one wishes to last, that one needs to make
a world for survival, which cannot be done
simply, or soon, but by a slow
crystal on crystal accretion of a made
world, a world made to last.

One is nothing with no world.

140 SYLLABLES

All my life I have wondered,
Why doesn't somebody write
A terrible poem that says
In so many words, this world
Is a fraud, the people who
Run it are murderous fools,
Everything ever printed
Is a lie, all their damn art
And literature is a fake,
Behind their gods and laws, they
Are all buggers and snarfs and
Pee hole bandits, their science
Is just a fancy way to kill
Us and our girls and kids.
What I want to know is why
Somebody doesn't write it
All down in about twenty
Lines of seven syllables
Once for all, and scare the shit
Out of all the dirty squares.
