It's World Heritage Day in Germany today! In 2017, caves from the Ice Age in the Swabian Jura became UNESCO World Heritage Site. Mankind's earliest mobile art was found in those caves, e.g, the marvellous figure of the lion man, carved in mammoth ivory ca. 40,000 years ago. 1/2 🏺

This Egyptian model boat dates from c2080-1940 BCE & was enclosed in a tomb. Its symbolism may be to ensure the safe travel of the dead in the afterlife or, more generally, it may represent the journey to the afterlife. Either way, it’s terrific. 🏛️ Rijksmuseum 📷mine 🏺 AncientBlueSky

Four #cicada brooches, Eastern Germanic, c. 380-500 CE silver, copper alloy, iron The Morgan Library & Museum display #cicadapocalypse #cicadaggedon #cicadamania
photo of the four cicadas brooches pinned up on display board at museumgallery label:

CICADA BROOCHES
Cicadas symbolized immortality in the ancient world, perhaps because of their seemingly miraculous regeneration after long periods of dormancy. Cicada brooches were worn by women living along the Danube and on the northern shores of the Black Sea. The Goths converted to Christianity in the period after AD 350, and these brooches may have had connotations of spiritual renewal and rebirth.

This isn’t a fresco painting as might first appear, but a sophisticated mosaic made from thousands of tiny tiles, from the floor of Hadrian’s Villa, Tivoli. Depicting four doves on rim of large gilt bronze basin, & based on design by Sosus of Permagon (2nd century, Capitoline Museum)
pale grey doves perch on rim of gold metal bowl, one sips at water, another ruffles its wings
