Yes, I went to a new record store this weekend, but I’m listening to the new Phoebe Bridgers album for reasons.

Congrats to @inkwellmonster.bsky.social on winning the HWA elections! It looks like now, when she admonishes me to help corral pitch authors at next year’s Stokercon, I better be punctual.

When some awful news-worthy thing happens to a kid, it’s rarely school, friends, or pop culture at the heart of it; it’s usually the goddamned parents. And when parents complain about something their kid does…well, blame-shifting is a helluva drug.

Next year, everyone’s going to be reading a story of mine in an anthology celebrated The Shining, and that story (a transcript of a journalist’s notebook) was partially inspired by how I take notes. Exhibit A: This fucking mess of notes I’m taking for research on food processing.
Two-sheet spread of sloppy handwritten notes on food processing and animal inspection.

I like Phoebe Bridgers, have been listening to the new album, but she’s a particular vibe, right? Enough so that when someone says, I’ve been listening to that new Phoebe Bridgers album a lot, the only response should be, “So, um, you being doing all right, man?” My view this evening while walking.

I made a meme
A meme showing smiling Nicole Kidman in the AMC movies ad. Text reads "me when a movie is 90 minutes"
The next image is Statler and Waldorf from the muppets. Text reads: me when a movie is over two hours.

Trans rights is inherently a bodily autonomy issue. Just like abortion rights is. We can't have gender equity or reproductive freedom without trans rights. Full stop. You can yell at me and make up shit that you claim I've said if it makes you feel better. I don't care. I'm right. And you know it.

So this is 43. Went to work, pitched a new collection, reviewed a story contract. My kid sculpted the Jack o’lantern keychain you see.

I realized I never shared this; my teen has been periodically showing me anime she likes, including Studio Ghibli, and the one I enjoy the most is My Neighbor Totoro. Months ago, she sculpted these guys and they now rest atop my music case.
Totoros.

When I edited, back in the day, I had to cut it at the opening para/end of the page because there were simply too many. Occasionally, I’d get a first time submitter or kid writer and my teacher-side would take over and give personalized feedback, but that was *rare*.

This might sound painfully arrogant, but I was re-reading my old *old* story “All That You Leave Behind,” for reasons I won’t get into here, and I was struck by how, 10 years later, I *still* love how it turned out. That’s not common for me; I’m infuriatingly nitpicky on shit.

And just like that, I’ve turned in the final edits (I think? Sure, let’s go with it) for “In These Silences, You Want It More”, which will be appearing in VIEWS FROM THE OVERLOOK, an anthology from Vintage Books next year to celebrate the 50th anniversary of Stephen King’s THE SHINING.

Stokercon is, for the majority of people, the only public-facing aspect to the HWA, so there’s at least the semblance of transparency with what they do. The rest of HWA? Forget the very real question mark of how it “benefits” writers, no one knows anything about it. Yay for secret clubs, I guess?

Absolutely. Have a StokerCon committee (like other cons) who also manage the Stoker Awards and throw the entire HWA in the bin. Irredeemable at this point, I think.

No, there are no acceptable uses. Yes, it is different from collaborating with an actual human being who thinks and feels and understands nuance and was not born of a mass criminal act. (I mean, probably. You never know with some families, I guess.)
Screenshot of a Bsky post:
Do you think there are any acceptable uses of Al in the writing process? Is using Al to provide some feedback different from employing an editor or asking a spouse to provide feedback (including potential edits)?
Obviously at some point it is no longer your writing but where would you draw that line

I cannot begin to sum up in any form of articulate speech how much I loathe these people. The closest I get: I wish them an eternal case of poison oak, and I wish for them to have a violent (but non-lethal) allergy to it.

Hi. Teacher here with 20 years experience and a Master’s in Education. What this clown shows of an ed sec is saying is emphatically *not* how people, especially kids, learn. Learning is not “being fed”, it is not passive, and these ghouls know that…but the monetary donations are *so good*.

My head canon is, yes, and Rhodes definitely threw some language around, but they were too valuable to piss off and he only assumed command in the last 24 hours of their base’s existence, so he did it out of earshot/in his head.

And not really the point here, and we’re on social media where composition is informal, anyway, but this errant comma on a *publisher’s* bio bugs me. If he meant to present the “previously” as an appositive, he needed a preceding comma (devil horn commas, I teach my students)
The bio of the Axios publisher includes an extra comma. Petty, I know, but we’re stuck in this fading republic together, and I look for my fun where I can.

This writer, by the way, is Axios’s *publisher*, and he is apparently this deeply, deeply stupid. I’m really tired of living in a system where connected folks can just fail upwards, and we have to all be okay with that.
