With the amount of work being involved, finding out you're not alone can be disappointing or even demoralising. I think I'm going to stick with original #C64 game concepts for now...

With more and more people working on #C64 ports, the chance that someone else is working on the same game in parallel increases. I had this happen to me with C64anabalt, VVVVVV, as well as my AGI port, and apparently it is now also happening with the below Populous port. honchoc64.com/populous.html

While the #c64 port has been available for free for years, this week you can also get the original for free!

I wanted to support a disk version, so I included a full vector background plotting routine during runtime to keep file sizes low. But errors showed when >4 colors per char are needed...

Some 15 (!) years ago I worked on my own version of a #c64 AGI interpreter. I was able to run several KQ1 rooms before I lost interest due to the enormity of the task. Apparently Mean Hamster Software succeeded in keeping motivation high: meanhamster.com/games/agi-64

Was working on implementing a heart/health system in my latest #C64 game. With a player death check not yet implemented, my routine was happy to spit out 255 hearts 😀. #gamedev

I'm still using the exact same #C64 Programmers Reference Guide that my late father bought some 40 years ago for 59 Dutch guilders! It even still contains some of his handwritten notes...

"one of the games on this list is an "impossible" port I never, ever thought I'd see running on a real C64. My jaw is still on the floor, and I'm on my knees collecting my teeth writing it all with one hand." 😀 www.youtube.com/watch?v=0WkN...

Sorry for the lack of updates on my #c64 #gamedev recently. However, this doesn't mean there is no progress. Working on an original concept means some ideas just don't work out as intended and need to be scrapped again, slowing progress somewhat...

There are various shoptypes. Some only sell ropes and/or bombs, but others also sell usefull items! Shoptypes are random, so you could have been unlucky so far...

Happy Monday, #GameDev crew! Nestled on my bookshelf is this treasure from #Spelunky dev Derek Yu ( @mossmouth.bsky.social ), published in 2016 by Boss Fight Books ( @bossfightbooks.com ). A short thread 🧵 about why I love this book and reference it often:
