I fear the bar on that is changing as we speak. Maybe Jenrick is more in tune with prospective and actual Reform voters than Farage now.

If you haven’t read it I’d recommend Blitzed about drug use in the Reich and specifically about the regular stimulant and sedative cycle prescribed to control Hitler in his last few years, which is very relevant here.

It’s weird because it’s not even as if the U.K. was a world imperial power for very long - basically a century at most, but it’s based so much of its personal identity on that period. It’s like a 60 year old man fixating on having won Best Costume at a Hallowe’en office party 10 years ago.

Tory conference is fully underway, so I have tried really hard to understand the logic of treating 24-year-olds like the responsibility of their parents when it comes to benefits, but not for anything else. Bold if you want their parents to vote for you! www.newstatesman.com/politics/uk-...

The takeaway here is that the Nazis did so well in the pivotal 1930 election because they offered a consistent and sincere agenda of brutal political violence which voters found attractive. Everything else they did was incompetent.

I think the debate has moved on to who’s English, and I’m very happy to disagree with Suella Braverman (and Tommy Robinson, and Danny Tommo) about this. Even if Jacob Rees-Mogg sort of agrees with me.

Omigod, this is the most heartwarming story possible! Backpack (bear 89) is the son of the 2019 winner of Fat Bear Week, Holly (bear 435). In 2007, he injured his foot & a practice of riding on momma's Holly's back had a new meaning: he was mobility-restricted while it healed. So Holly moved him.
From DISCVR blog's Facebook page, a momma bear & a yearling cub on her back in the shallow water. I think the background has been swapped out, and I can't rule out some AI use there? God, Facebook has become the social media for AI slop : (

The title of the article, which I link below, is "How Bear 89 earned the name Backpack"

Yes, and it’s terrible writing, much like Ryan North’s more recent take in One World Under Doom. Why would Doom be a competent or fair ruler, even with nigh-omnipotence? He’s just a techbro with massive envy and resentment issues - not the best model for utopian governance.

But do we even know that’s how Gaius would have said it? IIRC phonology is somewhat based on a couple of contemporary comments and spelling mistakes and mostly on modern Romance languages 2000 years later. It may be the best we can do, but do we really know?

Paul Park @pauljunhyuk.bsky.social · 26/09/2026
Sure, but that doesn’t make it correct, just common. It offers no grounds for saying ki-ton is wrong.
100
Paul Park @pauljunhyuk.bsky.social · 26/09/2026
But, to continue to use this example, it makes no sense that the first vowel is ai rather than i, that’s just English convention, like transliterating u to y sometimes and getting cybernetics out of kubernetes. Ki-ton is also a well-established pronunciation and I wouldn’t fault a reader for it.

Paul Park @pauljunhyuk.bsky.social · 26/09/2026
I am of course not a classical philologist, but I would say that most people don’t know about the commonest pronunciation (ky-tn) and some might be annoyed whichever you choose. It’s probably more important to pick one and stick with it.
100
Paul Park @pauljunhyuk.bsky.social · 26/09/2026
Except that’s not even a vaguely accurate pronunciation, it was probably closer to chi-ton (quite similar to how it’s written in English). I was taught ki-ton at school. I think the community should accept different pronunciations will prevail.

Paul Park @pauljunhyuk.bsky.social · 26/09/2026
But which community and which common pronunciation do they expect?

There was a whole Victorian fight about this, English pronunciation vs Italian pronunciation. I personally prefer the former, because I prefer vicissim to we kiss ‘im. But neither is strictly correct or accurate.
000
Paul Park @pauljunhyuk.bsky.social · 26/09/2026
Not really? We have no idea how ancient Romans (or Greeks) pronounced words, all we basically have is Catholic tradition, which is heavily influenced by modern Italian pronunciation. In English we generally pronounce it “See-zer” though that’s no doubt very inaccurate.

Quite right. We need to get firm regulation on campaign finance and post-political jobs or we’ll end up like the US, with politicians fully incentivised to support techno-feudalism rather than democracy. In fact, I think we’re mostly already there.

Rees-Mogg, stopped clock, etc. Braverman doesn’t have to identify as English if she doesn’t want to but she doesn’t have to be such an idiot about it.

Paul Park @pauljunhyuk.bsky.social · 24/09/2026
As with most such situations, it’s a valid ethnicity once you’re an immigrant - lots of English-Canadians - but not if you stayed at home. Braverman can argue she isn’t ethnically English and she doesn’t have to identify as English if she doesn’t want to, but she doesn’t have to be an idiot.

Yes, NHS treatment of CFS has been poor for at least as long as I’ve been a GP (since 2009) - there are very few specialist clinics for what is quite a common condition and it’s under diagnosed and definitely under-treated. It’s better here in Canada. The case with ADHD is even worse, if anything.

Capitalism has been dying for fifty years; we live under techno-feudalism. The techno-financial complex has no functional regulation or need to answer to customers, shareholders, or democratic governments.

You mean ending free university tuition in the UK (in place since 1945)? Yeah, the Blair government did that in 1998. Don’t know if Tony was super proud about that but probably yes. It was more Mandelson thing, though, which is pretty typical.
