Hello I am a software engineer at MongoDB, conference speaker person, and athlete 🏈 who is also building a Git course at gitlegit.dev (although I will mostly post nonsense probably)

Sometimes trying to get CI to pass on an OSS project feels like a fucking Souls-like run.

Sometimes I'm like "I'm pretty average at my job" until I do some community work and try to help someone with their project and then I'm like, uhm I actually seem to be kind of an expert. I mean it should go without saying after like 12 years of doing this but apparently my brain doesn't agree.

My kid has a music class and every week the teacher tries to send the same blonde kid home w me. And every week I’m like “that’s not my kid”. Then she starts looking for my (mixed race) kid’s mom everywhere until I’m like “yes hello I am indeed still her white mom just like last week”

Did a talk about building a WebSockets server in PHP and encouraged people to contribute to Ratchet (a WS library in PHP), and a guy came up afterwards to ask for advice on how to make his first contribution to OSS. He just messaged me with a link to his first PR (it's for Ratchet) 🥹

My friend got notes all over his building from a girl he had eye contact with on a tram. Trying to find “guy in Doc Marten loafers” like a real-life male Cinderella. They’ve been on several dates now. She is incredibly hot and cool. He cheeses HARD. This story may sustain me for like 5 years.

I’d love to learn more about quantum computing but unfortunately I know fuck all about physics, and therefore any resource reads like the sci-fi book your weird cousin’s been trying to write since high school 20 years ago.

Why do sales guys take calls that are, like, super loud? Are they worried the client doesn't have volume controls?

It's so funny how LLMs are pretty much useless for most real-life use cases without tool calling or RAG, and so tools will be like "thinking... executing function xyz..." Congrats, you just made a web app of ten microservices wearing a trench coat.

I’m finishing up the last recordings for my Git course. Most of them were taken this summer at the peak of my body recomp, where I wasn’t drinking alcohol, avoiding sugars, gluten, dairy etc. It’s absolutely insane how different my face looks in today’s recordings

Any time I’m out by myself people will ask me “where’s your kid right now?” with this puzzled look as if she doesn’t have a dad she lives with half the time I’ve taken to telling them I left her to roam the streets by herself. Sometimes they believe me for a few seconds.

A hill I will die on is that it is and always has been “bitchy resting face” and not “resting bitch face”. It’s when your resting face looks bitchy! Not when your bitch face is resting??? Makes zero sense, idk why everyone collectively deluded themselves into switching the words around

Genuinely what is the added value of using this sort of phrasing in documentation? At best it doesn't communicate anything about usage, and at worst it makes the user feel incompetent if they can't figure it out.
A screenshot of some documentation saying "Solving this for arrays is straightforward -". The word "straightforward" is selected to highlight it.

The worst thing about this city is that it’s small enough to run into people you don’t want to run into, but big enough to never run into who you do.

Meme of a guy shaking hands with another guy, whose head has been replaced by an icon showing two bluejays. There's another guy in the corner with a cross drawn over him and his head is the Git icon. The caption says "Friendship ended with Git, now JJ is my best friend"

Whichever PO came up with that Zip game on LinkedIn is a true communist hero saboteur. Imagine tricking the board into thinking their daily active user North Star is reflective of actual economic value. Brilliant play.

Late stage capitalist Catholicism
To the left, there’s a broken electric “candle” which is just an LED on the inside. To the right there is a credit card terminal with instructions to tap your card and a candle will light up. These are candles in a church to light for symbolising prayer and remembrance.
