Alcohol had by that point taken its toll & she looked a couple of decades older than she was. If you get a chance watch her opposite Alan Badel in The Lover. Perfectly directed by the indefatigable Joan Kemp Welch, it’s a testament to just what a hell of an actress she was.

Vivian Merchant was born on this date in 1929. A wonderful actress, treated appalling by Harold Pinter, a man who wanted both his cake and to eat it when it came to women. Her final appearance in a Crown Court shown in 1982, illustrated in the 2nd picture, is very sad.
