Meanwhile, I love what the Rebel Economist has said here about the Greens’ youth employment policy! therebeleconomist.substack.com/p/finally-a-...

Finally, a Party Offers to Employ Youth
The Greens' youth job guarantee has flaws worth fixing, and the loudest objection to it is the weakest one.

This is an ongoing crisis for the economy - it means that all political promises being made right now are based on forecasts that are reliably wrong… but if a political party ignores said forecast, they’re vilified for ignoring economic realities.

Imagine if National had achieved their commitment to deliver 10,000 public EV chargers by 2030, backed by a $257 million investment over four years!

Great guy. Worked with my mum at the Auckland Star. A bright, intelligent man banging out news on a manual typewriter. Sad to hear he’s left us

Walk Petone beach, get a coffee at the coffee box and chat with the crew, marvel at the raging southerly, and spot the ailing leopard seals. You live in Paradise. Hope your world grows less echoey and warmer as summer nears

Business financial data day - always a favourite. What's going on? TLDR: Profits pick-up, wages don't. I'll get into the glorious detail, but concepts first... 'NZ Businesses' buy stuff, pay wages, sell stuff, and make profits. Per capita figures for the above in the chart, simple? Right... [🧵 1/n]

The Government had a lever it could have pulled months ago - temporarily cut fuel excise to offset some of the war-driven fuel shock. Instead fuel prices have helped push inflation to 4.1% and the RBNZ has raised the OCR. Now the Government announces it won’t increase excise next year. Too late

And how about: if (as we’re told) our pensions are dependent on having adequate numbers of educated young people continuing to grow the economy, we should be working out what it takes to make them stay - or return home

This makes me so angry. There’s nothing logical about the way the RBNZ adds cost to rising prices, to force businesses to reduce those prices, while the factors that increased the prices are out of our control…

I’ve been pondering IRD’s response of liquidating companies that have themselves been put into distress by other liquidations. A chain reaction that wipes employment and erases retirement savings. I’m sure ideologues will exclaim ‘creative destruction’ I’m seeing ecosystem collapse

Great analysis Kent. Personally I’m sad to see the proprietor class so beaten down. And as you say, they’re the job creators - without them it’s all gig economy or salary class. Time someone chose to be a voice for them

Such a pity that a business owner now has to be an online performing monkey to be seen by potential customers - and have the algorithm show your creative efforts to barely a 10th of the people who chose to follow you (for a fee)…

Good observation. I was talking to some people last night about how we might see that Covid bubble effect return - where people stay local, shop local and support the community etc. (presuming that petrol prices stay high and restrictions occur)

Question: if treasury had been more accurate in their predictions (read: pessimistic), would interest rates have been lower earlier, less unemployment, fewer business pushed into liquidation? Or would the RBNZ still have done what they did?

Once again this shows that the financial managers entrusted with keeping our economy on the rails (RBNZ and Treasury) are reliably WRONG. They tightened too early, too high, for too long and overshot every target, including unemployment. Lives and businesses wrecked
