Paul Brownjohn @paulbj.bsky.social · 14/10/2026Charlie boy looks like he's on death's door in this pic! 000
Paul Brownjohn @paulbj.bsky.social · 03/10/2026Some butterflies from previous summers - there were practically none this year as it was often too hot for them and in any case many flowering plants on which they depend died in the heat and drought 000
Paul Brownjohn @paulbj.bsky.social · 16/07/2026Probably my favourite butterfly pic Two marbled whites for the price of one! 000
Paul Brownjohn @paulbj.bsky.social · 16/07/2026I have been trying to catch one of these taking off for some time and finally... This is the dramatic black winged electric blue bodied male version 110
Paul Brownjohn @paulbj.bsky.social · 16/07/2026There's a stream near where I live in Luxembourg which supports a population of "Beautiful Demoiselle" damsel flies (Calopteryx virgo). Until recently, I had only ever observed males with their almost black wings and electric blue bodies but a few days ago females started appearing. 100
Paul Brownjohn @paulbj.bsky.social · 15/07/2026Looks like a Jersey Tiger to me - Euplagia quadripunctaria. Not usually seen as far north as Britain but with climate change... Gorgeous colourful chaps when they reveal their scarlet waistcoat! 110
Paul Brownjohn @paulbj.bsky.social · 15/07/2026One of these I think - a Painted Lady, Vanessa cardui 000
Paul Brownjohn @paulbj.bsky.social · 08/07/2026Always love to see the first few Painted Ladies in the garden 000
Paul Brownjohn @paulbj.bsky.social · 07/07/2026Good to see that for once, butterflies seem to be doing well this year. This one is a Brimstone 000
Paul Brownjohn @paulbj.bsky.social · 04/07/2026I have been hoping to catch one taking off ever since I have been photographing these chaps 110
Paul Brownjohn @paulbj.bsky.social · 03/07/2026My hobby is photography & my favourite prey is the Beautiful demoiselle (Calopteryx virgo). I have loads of shots of males with their black wings & electric blue bodies but not a single shot of the light brown females - until today when I went down to the stream & found 4 or 5 females & some males 020
Paul Brownjohn @paulbj.bsky.social · 02/07/2026No! The sort of snails in our garden at least, numerous though they may be, are not of the sort that are usually eaten. Some of them are rather handsome though compared to the standard British snail 120
Paul Brownjohn @paulbj.bsky.social · 02/07/2026On my morning wander around the bucolic block, I cam across a cat that had just caught a mouse (poor thing) that was still alive and trying to get away - I don't think it made it! Also a few metres further on a marbled white feeding on a thistle. 030
Paul Brownjohn @paulbj.bsky.social · 26/06/2026Seems to be a very good year for the "Beautiful Demoiselle" Calopteryx virgo. They seem quite numerous this year compared to past years. Usually, I find one solitary one hunting around our local stream but this year I have seen several males together fighting over territory. 010
Paul Brownjohn @paulbj.bsky.social · 27/05/2026Photo taken at the Lallenger open cast mining site, now a nature reserve. The site is either forest, where there is sufficient topsoil or dry heathland with only about 1 - 5 cm of soil over the bedrock which is where I found this. Apparently it is: Himantoglossum hircinum The Lizard Orchid 020
Paul Brownjohn @paulbj.bsky.social · 25/05/2026Snapped today in the Lallenger open cast mining site in Esch-sur-Alzette, Luxembourg, which is now a nature reserve incorporating scores of hectares of dry grassland/heathland (pelouse seche); quite a rare habitat. A wild Pyramidal Orchid. 110
Paul Brownjohn @paulbj.bsky.social · 17/04/2026We have a pair who nest high on the spire of the church opposite me. One of them deigned to pose for me a couple of years back 110
Paul Brownjohn @paulbj.bsky.social · 16/04/2026Ahhhhh - this year's first strawberry flower has appeared despite us still having some very sharp night-time frosts. 000
Paul Brownjohn @paulbj.bsky.social · 13/04/2026Every year we see 100s of these bright red bugs in our garden. They are called Firebugs (Pyrrhocoris apterus) for reasons best known to themselves they form huge agglomerations of 100s of individuals. In this case, they accumulated on some charred timber which shows them up rather well! 000
Paul Brownjohn @paulbj.bsky.social · 11/04/2026and this is a Lemon Pansy taken in Chiang Mai in Thailand Junonia lemonia, I believe 000
Paul Brownjohn @paulbj.bsky.social · 01/04/2026I think the question may be would the Green party want such people? Seriously, I can only imagine that they were never really Reform voters, just voters protesting against the other two parties who had no where else to go so with the Greens resurgent - now they do have a worthwhile alternative! 000
Paul Brownjohn @paulbj.bsky.social · 01/04/2026A stream rises from the limestone bedrock in a hill near where I live and the resulting stream fairly quickly becomes a small river. Every year I see some "Beautiful Demoiselle" damsel flies hunting over the stream I was lucky enough to catch this (male) one with a camera. 021
Paul Brownjohn @paulbj.bsky.social · 25/03/2026I read somewhere that Lychee plants are easy to grow from the pits inside that fruit. It's true, and they are very attractive plants but not frost hardy at all. 000
Paul Brownjohn @paulbj.bsky.social · 16/03/2026I have spotted my first buttfly of the year - a Brimstone like this (but not this one) 010
Paul Brownjohn @paulbj.bsky.social · 13/03/2026I fear that average american red-neck sees trump and his ilk as role models! 000
