Went to a birthday party for one of my kids' classmates. There were a dozen white dads all in Carrhartts, hoodies, trucker caps and the same beard, and there was me, regretting my shirt with buttons and pants with stripes. An gathering of Amish or Orthodox Jewish men would have had more variety.

This year I'm all about celebrating Columbus Day, in honor of an incompetent, delusional, racist, narcissistic pedophile who thought everything should be named after him but wound up going to prison. #ColumbusDay

I kinda miss "conspiracy theories." Now that our ruler openly tells his minions to "cheat like hell" and his whole cabinet and the billionaire oligarchs openly commit felonies daily, there's just no sense of mystery or subtlety in paying attention to power and politics anymore.

A fusion of goth rock and some subtle bossa nova influence -- "Gotha Nova". Manko Eponymous did the vocals on this track.

David Graeber points out that the "People can't be left to their own devices because they misbehave sometimes" argument behind all policing and surveillance becomes ludicrous when you hear the "solution" is to give SOME people a license to kill, assault, snoop, kidnap and steal with impunity.

Which leaves liberals whinging, "Sure it's not perfect, but it's better than monarchy, the extreme alternative in one direction! So it's our only alternative!" Except, of course, for the alternative in the opposite direction: the way humans organised themselves for nearly all of our history.

It could be argued that the Bill of Rights and the rest of the Constitution address these basic problems...but the history of the USA, especially recently, demonstrates that the ostensible "rule of law" really just means rule by lawyers and judges. And if they don't feel like playing by the rules...

Who would have come up with the idea of majority rule as the definition of fairness? I don't know, but I'm pretty sure who didn't: minorities.
000
Paul @paulanomaly.bsky.social · 05/10/2026
In this way we can view democracy and majority rule not as a methodology for peace, but as war deferred, possibly at a steep interest rate.

Paul @paulanomaly.bsky.social · 05/10/2026
Graeber points out that this makes perfect sense (only) in pirate crews or other scenarios where citizens are armed and dangerous; voting is really just counting your potential enemies in the violence that may ensue from the failure to achieve consensus.

Paul @paulanomaly.bsky.social · 05/10/2026
Democracy is the belief that for one person to rule over nine is tyranny, but for three to rule over seven is paradise, if five don't vote, perhaps because they were persuaded, prevented or just disenfranchised.

Hey, bird lovers - if you've been worried about bald eagles, fear less; we see 'em all the time around here, and golden eagles too now and then. The other day we even saw a bald eagle getting mobbed by our holler's crows, and a second bald eagle came to join the fracas.

Corporations spend more than $1.5 billion a year on union-busting. That’s $1.5 billion they could have spent on higher wages, better benefits, and improving workplace safety. Remember: if they weren’t so scared of worker power, they wouldn’t fight so hard against unions.

Amazon, awful @doctorow.pluralistic.net pluralistic.net/2026/09/04/c...
Amazon's payola isn't about radio play – it's about search. When you search Amazon, the top results do not represent Amazon's best guess about what product will best match your query: rather, Amazon auctions off those top results to its platform sellers. Amazon's search results reflect who paid the biggest bribe, not who has the best product.

Rome wasn't overthrown in a day. Oligarchies are stubborn, and by the time they've established and entrenched themselves, they have resources, power blocs and even mercenaries they can deploy to repel would-be dethroners.
A woodcut engraving of a courtroom scene in which the divorcee has thrown herself into the arms of one of the lawyers and they are about to kiss. The image has been altered: the heads of the judge, the court clerk and both lawyers have been replaced by green Android 'droid' mascots in judicial powdered wigs. The judge's bench sports a pixelated, 1998-era 'I'm feeling lucky' Google button.
