We've come to Derry this weekend to celebrate our friends' 25th wedding anniversary. It's been an absolute blast. It's a mad city that we've visited again and again, with a wild history, and the most lovely people you could wish to meet. Love it.

Fux ache. Thistle and Scotland winning (and scoring) on the same day. That's sweet. I shall leave the country more often when they're playing if that's what it takes.

Spent a fantastic morning in the company of Seamus Breslin on a tour of Derry City Cemetery. He was telling the stories of Dambuster pilots, the author "All Things Bright and Beautiful", Republican soldiers and hunger strikers, and Jimmy McShane who fronted the song "Tarzan Boy". A fascinating tour.

Lovely to see this film. Dunnes strikers Mary Manning and Cathy O'Reilly stayed with us in Maryhill whenever they came to speak to Trade Unionists in Scotland. Such ordinary, thoughtful people who took a stand against something they knew was wrong.

Lovely evening of Philip Glass music from the @rsno.bsky.social at Sonic-a tonight. Great start to the night with one of his piano études as the orchestra took to the stage (I was at the concert with my eldest child, who ALWAYS plays that on our piano when they visit).

There's a nice wee exhibition at Glasgow Tramway about history of Govanhill Baths, and the campaign to keep it open. As someone who grew up in a house with no bath, where we bathed as a family in the big baths at Whiteinch it's funny to see the rules and regulations about using the council baths.
Sign on an old wooden door which says "BYE-LAW No. 18.
No person shall remain in a Bathroom longer than HALF-AN-HOUR. He shall, when quitting the room, leave the door thereof open. In the event of assistance being required by a bather, such bather should call out the number of the room occupied".

To lessen the risk of Accident the Attendant has instructions to knock at the Bathroom door from time to time. Bathers are requested to reply when he knocks.

Bathers are further requested to dry themselves partially before stepping out of the Bath."

The wee automated voice man on the Subway in Glasgow loves Cowcaddens. Other stations get a flat "The train is approaching Kinning Park. We're all doomed". Cowcaddens brings him some happy memory, and is said with a distracted lilt.

The UK AIDS Memorial Quilt on display at Tramway in Glasgow just now is an impressively moving reminder of the individual people behind the statistics. A sad reminder too of the harms that stigma and prejudice can bring.

The attack on World Trade Centre 25 yrs ago was utterly unreal to those of us watching in real time from afar. In 1993 I visited the towers, 5 months after a car bomb in the underground car park had killed 6 people. The added security checks then were cursorary compared to what we live with nowadays

I find choosing new glasses unnecessarily stressful. You're buying specs because you can't see without them. Then you make a choice on your appearance with the new ones, which you can only assess without your glasses on.

I'm delighted that the Bayeux Tapestry is proving very popular, even if I'm unconvinced by the idea of moving such a delicate artefact. However, were these eager people not aware that it has been on display for years in a museum in Bayeux, a few hours away from London? (Feeling grumpy, may delete)

As someone who drinks too much too hot coffee, sadly this confirms smaller scale research that had been done previously in China, Iran, Turkey and South America. The South American research was quite interesting, comparing people who drink hot or cold maté, showing it was the heat not maté doing it.
