In Mandarin, 啊 is used when someone hasn't heard or understood what was said, roughly equivalent to "Sorry, what?" But to Japanese ears, the sound can evoke the very different あ？, which is sometimes used in an aggressive or confrontational way.

These trees are insane. They’re what, over 100 feet tall? They’re bigger, older, and contribute a lot more to the planet than me by a LOT. Humility.

Its Korean War Armistice Day. Pops was a cranky, often violent guy. He took a bullet and a piece of grenade in Korea. 60 years later, at a school thing for my daughter, an old Korean woman who knew his history embraced him and thanked him for saving her country as she wept. So there’s that.

Made my daughter spring rolls one time and she says, “How ‘bout some peanut sauce, OG?” So I dragged all this stuff out, whisked it up, and I have to say: pretty, pretty good. She saved the leftover sauce and put it on her ramen the next day too. Kiddo all grown up now. Miss having her around.

Sweet chili sauce, spicy garlic chili sauce, toasted sesame oil, rice vinegar, peanut butter, and soy sauce in jars and bottles, ready to be whisked together.

Found this old cloth bound book in a box way back in the closet. It is a collection of terrific short stories, each one deeply insightful into human confusion and uncertainty. Find a copy and read it, and I’m betting you’ll enjoy it.
