The hardest part of being a coach is deinternalizing everything you've learned. This goes double for when you're trying to coach yourself. Seeing all the experience you've accumulated in a more concrete form is a great way to reach an epiphany or realize you're a fucking idiot--usually both!

If you're pissed about piece of shit trash blood money getting into fighting games and taking over events, remember the best thing you can do is support local grassroots events and avoid attending these bigger events. Which you should do anyway cause like duh but more than ever.

Really grateful for everyone who took the time to read this one, it means a lot to me. I could have spent the time writing a dozen Discourse essays instead but I felt like this was something only I could write, and that's the kind of work I want to be making.

"The hard part of learning fighting games is coaching yourself" I recently started doing 1:1 coaching, and figured I'd write about my teaching philosophy: less imparting game knowledge, more helping focus on a goal and providing the tools to work towards it. www.patreon.com/pattheflip/p...

HOW DARE

A jeopardy question: "pedants argue about whether this verb should be used as a synonym of its 7-letter dictionary neighbor compose."

The answer is comprise, which I was complaining about pedantically in the post to which Ken Jennings made the below reply.

if it helps, here is a clip of me just mashing cyclops assist in MvC2, which is not too dissimilar from how often i use it in actual matches, and i'm honestly surprised at how much uptime it has.

Also, if you're interested but don't feel quite ready to work with a coach yet, go read From Masher to Master 2 first (patrickmiller.itch.io/from-masher-...), which is coincidentally the book that @koh.money drew all these great illustrations of me teaching fighting game characters for.

The hardest part of learning fighting games is truly the process of trying to learn how to do this shit on your own, and while I think it's a valuable experience, it's also where a lot of people get stuck and churn out. A good coach can make it easier to navigate the emotional turbulence.

Supper Mario Broth @mariobrothblog.bsky.social · 07/10/2026

In the Mario Teaches Typing games, Mario never criticizes the player for underperforming and tries to be understanding and supportive. According to Charles Martinet, that was his initiative, as he felt being negative would go against the core principles of Mario's character.

In the Mario Teaches Typing games, even if the player does badly or underperforms compared to previous attempts, Mario will try to be understanding instead of critical:
Uh-oh, that wasn't quite as fast as the last time.
Hmm, are your fingers getting tired? Mine would be by now... if I had any. (laughs)
Charles Martinet, speaking at TooManyGames Convention 2021:
I got this marvelous opportunity to do Mario Teaches Typing. And when I got the script and I'm in the studio - I'm reading the script for the first time, there were things like "You failed!"
"That wasn't very good." "That was much worse... that was bad."
And I was reading that and I said, "Do you mind if I just, like, play with these words a little bit and just change them around?" because, you know, I never say "no" and I never say anything negative as Mario... and the producer graciously said "Sure, go for it!"
And so it became "Oh, that was good, but I know you can do even better!" "Oh, nice one but let's try again!" so it was always uplifting and always trying to be positive. And I think that that is the essence of the character to me - it's that love and that joy.
