If you make a left and you're in a collision, you share blame no matter how fast or how little the other driver paid attention. Or so they told me. Frankly, I don't think he saw me at all, no braking, no swerving.

Thank you. I'm good except it feels like someone's been pressing their knee between my shoulder blades for 8 hours. I'm whining. I'll be okay.

My comics belong in everyone's record collection. "Nothing happens when I put the record needle on your comic." True, but you bought my comic.

That's a bit of a commute. Yeah, it's dangerous out there. And vehicles are heavier than ever.

Well, I was in an auto accident. Chest, back, and knee ache but the truck is probably totaled. Glad I had my seatbelt on. I'd almost completed a left turn when another truck flew through the intersection. We both received citations.

Titan Books just released a new story in their Heroic Legends series: Isle of Swords, by @matthewjohnauthor.bsky.social. This story features Robert E. Howard’s #sword&sorcery hero Comac Mac Art. John is a fantastic S&S writer, so this is sure to be good. Swords together! ⚔️ a.co/d/03VAYAfZ

We're still nationalistic without a global conscience and empathy for all people. We don't even respect each other within our nations. We're greedy, violent, uncaring. We'd rather kill than solve problems that might inconvenience us. We haven't learned how to live on this planet yet.

Honestly, if we destroy the place that gave birth to us, the Earth, I'd rather we did not infest other planets with our species.

Let me get this straight. Fire generals and hire 83 yr old Newt Gingrich as an expert on advanced future weaponry. ... ... I think they really are sabotaging the U.S. from within.

I found I push folds, beards, a variety of things more when I ink this way. Better 'silhouettes'.

Inking advice to consider: After penciling, ink your drawing from the interior, toward the edge. Ink the outline last. Why? You're more encouraged to break past the outline. The advantage of this is depth, and interesting things that you may do with clothing folds, gear, & hair.

Agree. I read Dog of the South recently as well, a 'beautiful loser' story that's kind of neo/modern Western. Closer to Raising Arizona that the old west.

True Grit is one of my 10 favorite novels. Thank you for sharing this! This is more reaffirming to me than surprising, as I think great writers research-- and know a good idea when they read it.

There probably isn't a universal answer to that. I'll name someone I would, if I were a publisher, just throw the keys to and say take any car in the lot. Nathan Fox:

On networking, there's an independence to writing & drawing but I don't know if everyone feels it. I think art is a huge part of storytelling so it's hard for me to let go of that side of it-- even though, clearly, there are many talented artists. On ideas, it's an absolute delight to write & draw.

This is obviously emotionally charged material but Gordimer handles it deftly, without losing empathy for any of the characters.

Latest read, July's People (1981) by Nadine Gordimer; an alternative history in which apartheid is violently overthrown & whites are subservient to blacks. Maureen & her children, white, now work under their former black servant July, whom they thought of as a friend. He has other feelings. #BookSky

Think of Peanuts. Wouldn't really work if it had been drawn with realistic looking children and animals.

Often the best slice-of-life comics have quirky, esoteric art. It's a way of injecting fantasy into the everyday, while keeping the story 'everyday'.

Pretty good rule of thumb: If what you want to write looks like a soap opera or episodic prime-time drama-- you'll have a hard time finding a comic book artist. At least set it in the Old West, a fantasy world, the future, or a historic era. Throw the artist a bone.

There's often a divide between the story a writer wants to write and the story an artist wants to draw.

The stakes are high when people have their portfolio reviewed. EVERYONE dreams they'll get hired on the spot-- They imagine all their potential can be seen. The better they are, the more stressed they are. That's why even the good listeners are a little sad.

I zoned out in a bar once when a writer was telling me his Mary Jane and Peter Parker comic book idea. He realized I wasn't interested, got pissed off and walked away. I'm a world-class networker :)

In my experience, at cons, artists talk to artists about how they love each others work. How they both love that other guy's work too. Writers talk about ideas they have :)

It really varies. I've seen appreciative listeners (appreciative but always a little sad). And I've seen grown men cry during a critique. I've seen insults hurled. Rage. I'd rather sneak off and talk to creators than give critiques.

This is why in the Kung Fu movies they do all that unspecific re-shaping of their pupils; silence, meditation, fetching water, serving dinner, chores-- before they teach them the details. They want to teach someone who's listening and committed :)

Also, good advice regarding creativity is only good if you can hear it. If you can quiet down your ego and inner voice, your pride and your concerns, and actually listen.

Michael Golden; advice on drawing legs & how they provide the strong base and sense of power in dynamic figures. Newton and Potts were early in my career (hardly call it a career at the time). Newton a lot of about anatomy, light, and creating depth. Potts about studying classical artists & theory.

I was building pages well (that may be how I got work before I actually DREW well). Choosing the right 'shots' and solid compositions. I was a movie and art nut already. Jim Lee; advice about the key moment to choose when encapsulating movement in one panel.
