I never read any of the books that The Expanse was based on but I absolutely love the series. Not actually a big scifi reader besides all the Vonnegut and Adams I read in my youth. I got the first book in the newer series by the authors of the Expanse books, The Mercy of Gods, delivered on Monday.

Today is the first day of my 11 day work vacation. On Saturday Courtney and I are attending Floatzilla on the Mississippi River in the quad cities. Hundreds of people kayaking together on the river. On Sunday we're heading to Minneapolis for four nights and bringing the dogs.

The big todo in my town today is that a new gas station/truck stop has their first day open today. The gas at this company's stations is typically the cheapest around. It's like 30 or 40 cents cheaper than any other station in town. I'll take it. Gotta get excited about small things in a small town.

Bought tickets to see @toddglass.bsky.social at The Den Theatre in Chicago this November. He's a national treasure and I can't wait to see him perform again! I love the life I have now but sometimes I miss seeing all my favorite comedians and going to 2 or 3 comedy shows a week in LA. Fond memories.

Our wedding anniversary is mid-August and we decided to go away for a few days somewhere within driving distance. We settled on visiting the twin cities. We've never been. Booked a dog-friendly hotel room so we can bring the pups. If anyone has any dog-friendly recommendations I'm all ears!

Goldfish was spayed yesterday so we're just laying on the couch together taking it easy. We got her a cute recovery suit. I told her I know it's rough (ruff), but it's for the best and I have an appointment to get myself fixed in September, so it's not just something we do to dogs.

I bought a used bike last week. I already own a 1973 Schwinn Suburban that I love but it's so old and heavy that it's not the easiest bike to ride. This one is nothing fancy. It's a 2014(?) Raleigh Venture 3.0 that's just a lot easier to ride.

Courtney and I both enjoy cooking and, IMHO, are both pretty good at it. I can't think of any single thing that has had as noticeable an impact on our dinners as buying nicer peppercorns than we used to buy. Anybody have recs for even better pepper? I'm all ears.

Finally got around to seeing Good Luck, Have Fun, Don't Die. It was right up alley, absurd fun. Really enjoyed it. To be fair, I really love San Rockwell and Michael Peña in most everything they're in. The rest of the cast was great too.

My wife might come work at my work and get the same position I have just on a different shift. If we didn't have the dogs I'd switch to the same shift but I didn't think they'd love being home alone 10/hrs a day 4/days a week. The main upside is she'll make 60% more money.

The funniest part of the whole airspace-shutdown-over-a-balloon-mistaken-for-a-cartel-drone thing is that it will probably inspire cartels to release a bunch of mylar balloons into northerly winds at the same time they fly their drones across. Seems like it would work!

I watched His and Hers on Netflix and, boy, was it full of twists. They were mostly fine and I mostly enjoyed it but the final twist was... gratuitous.
