The Cameo profile for Donald Trump Jr. used to claim that the proceeds went to a charity, but we'll never know, because for years, Cameo never actually verified money went to charity. It was on the person behind the profile to donate the money. Cameo was not part of that transaction.

Whenever I'm talking about this work, in and out of corporate jobs, it always goes back to the foundational skills I built in this little community that you've never heard of, that most folks would disregard, where people are friendly and look out for one another.

We all talk about how important it is to take a long term approach to community building, and for good reason. But we are not usually in full control of that destiny. When you have your own thing, you are (for better or worse), and you can build skills with longevity in mind.

No matter where I've been since May 21, 2001, this community has been a part of it, where I give it the time I have to give, and it's been very rewarding. How long does this go? 26 years? 30 years? 50 years? I'm not real sure. I do have some things in place to protect it into the future.

We talked about how, even though we have a good group of long time members, the community had avoided becoming cliquish. During the monthlong celebration, we had visits from members who had joined in 15 different years, from 2001 to 2026.

We celebrated by honoring and interviewing members, sharing stories, reflecting on data from the community's history, and launching features. We talked about how the community activity had shifted over the years, and why being smaller isn't necessarily a bad thing.

In May, a community that I created celebrated 25 years online. I've managed it for the entire time. It's a funny thing to say out loud. You have an idea, you work at it, and then, somehow, 25 years goes by.

The Devil Wears Prada 2: Four characters are posed on a grand white staircase. Meryl Streep stands near the top in a voluminous red gown. Below her, Anne Hathaway stands on the left in a white suit, Emily Blunt stands on the right in a black dress, and Stanley Tucci sits on the bottom steps in a black suit and a black-and-white striped scarf.

Cars: Lightning McQueen, a red race car, is partially concealed by a draped blue sheet on a dark background. Only his eyes in the windshield and his smiling grill are visible. The classic "Cars" logo sits below him.

Wicked For Good: Against a colorful, magical sky, Glinda floats inside a glowing bubble in a pink dress on the left, while Elphaba flies on a broomstick in a black dress on the right. Below them, a yellow path winds toward a green, glowing city.

The Dink: An ensemble comedy poster featuring a bearded man in a blue headband holding a pickleball paddle in the foreground. Several other characters are clustered behind him. A pickleball net and dozens of green pickleballs fill the bottom of the frame, surrounding the title "the Dink" in stylized white and blue lettering.

A small refresh arrow icon is visible just below the Cars poster, and an "ALL" text link is on the far right of the top header.

Dolly Parton's star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.
A large, makeshift memorial covers Dolly Parton's star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. The brass and terrazzo star on the charcoal-colored sidewalk is almost entirely obscured by dozens of brightly colored flower bouquets, including red, pink, and yellow roses, white lilies, and assorted daisies.

Nestled among the flowers are several glass prayer candles, greeting cards, and printed photos of Dolly Parton. One sign features a photo of Dolly holding a guitar with the printed text, "FAREWELL TO A BELOVED AMERICAN ICON." Next to it is another portrait with a handwritten note that reads, "I WILL ALWAYS LOVE YOU DOLLY." A small Curious George book or card is also visible near the front.

Behind the dense pile of ground flowers stands a large floral wreath on a metal easel, made of light pink, dark pink, and peach roses, draped with a black sash that reads "DOLLY PARTO" (with the final letter obscured). To the left sits another circular wreath composed primarily of white flowers with bright pink and yellow blooms.

The scene takes place outdoors on a sunny day. In the background, a white Ford transit van is parked along the curb, and various storefronts, including a Starbucks, a souvenir shop, and an outlet, are visible across the street. On the far left edge of the frame, a person's hand is partially visible, pointing toward the memorial.

Marquee at The Fonda Theatre in Hollywood: "If you want the rainbow, you gotta put up with the rain. Dolly forever."
Here is the alt text for the image file PXL_20260826_161631213.jpg:

A daytime exterior photo of The Fonda Theatre under a clear blue sky. The building features a dark gray corrugated metal facade. The main marquee displays "THE FONDA THEATRE" in yellow lettering. Below the name, the white reader board displays black text across several sections:

The far-left section partially reads "THE RINGER FANTASY FOOTBALL SHOW PRESENTED BY VERIZON".

The center-left section reads "DOLLY FOREVER".

The center-right section reads "IF YOU WANT THE RAINBOW YOU GOTTA PUT UP WITH THE RAIN".

The far-right section lists upcoming September dates, including "9 17+18" and "9 24".

Below the marquee, the theater's entrance is closed off by black metal security gates. To the right of the entrance, a display case holds a teal poster that reads "FONDA THEATRE Celebrating 100 Years". In the foreground, Hollywood Walk of Fame stars are visible on the sidewalk next to a parking meter and an ornate black streetlamp displaying various parking restriction signs.

It was an easy pattern to spot and, ultimately, with the right autonomy, an easy decision for me to make: Reject the questions as they were off-topic, not allow the moderators or our members to be used in this way, and starve bad faith individuals of attention they so desperately seek.
110
Patrick O’Keefe @patrickokeefe.bsky.social · 25/08/2026
I also don't have to allow the communities I am responsible for to become pawns in that game, and to waste their collective energy in doing so.
100
Patrick O’Keefe @patrickokeefe.bsky.social · 25/08/2026
I can't stop people from being that way. But I don't have to participate in it, and I don't have to pretend to engage them like I would someone who actually cares about the subject at-hand.
100
Patrick O’Keefe @patrickokeefe.bsky.social · 25/08/2026
Similarly, I don't believe these former NBA players have any interest in the WNBA, women's sports, the safety of women, etc. This is just the latest tool of a wider grift, a desperate reach for adulation from groups that might not otherwise give them a second thought.
110
Patrick O’Keefe @patrickokeefe.bsky.social · 25/08/2026
They were not genuinely interested in the wider issue that Dr. Fauci was discussing; they simply wished to use him to score some weird points with groups more interested in harming folks and wasting moderator time than engaging honestly.
100
Patrick O’Keefe @patrickokeefe.bsky.social · 25/08/2026
In observing the pattern of questions, what became clear to me was that these folks were not participating in good faith.
100
Patrick O’Keefe @patrickokeefe.bsky.social · 25/08/2026
Dr. Fauci was not on our program to define gender. He was on our program to discuss specific subjects, and he was actually a wonderful guest. He remembered the names of community members and repeated them back when answering their questions.
100
Patrick O’Keefe @patrickokeefe.bsky.social · 25/08/2026
They would couch it in something reasonable, and then they would tie it to gender, and ask him to define it. For example, something like: "COVID data shows that women are affected by X at a higher rate than men are. How do you define woman in this instance?"
100
Patrick O’Keefe @patrickokeefe.bsky.social · 25/08/2026
Dr. Fauci was followed around online by weirdos and hounded, much like he is today, and the interview got on the radar of some random group, and they were signing up for free trials of CNN+ in order to ask the same question, in different ways.
100
Patrick O’Keefe @patrickokeefe.bsky.social · 25/08/2026
For a product called Interview Club, my team owned the approval of community-submitted questions, that would then be upvoted and potentially asked by a CNN personality to a celebrity or newsmaker. One such episode was Dr. Sanjay Gupta asking questions to Dr. Anthony Fauci.
100
Patrick O’Keefe @patrickokeefe.bsky.social · 25/08/2026
The story of two former NBA players declaring themselves eligible for the WNBA, in an effort to get the league to define gender, reminds me of a moderation situation that popped up while I was working at CNN.
