#WIPSnips Sept. 28: "prime" #WriteSky #WritingCommunity #WritingPrompts #PrairieSFF
She took a deep breath, held it a few seconds, let it out. Again, and again. She remembered her father, teaching her and her brother George how to swim, telling them that this was the way to prime yourself for a long submersion, that it would help your lungs get every atom of oxygen they could. Who knew if it was true. One more deep breath.

Holding her eyes open, she plunged under the water again.

She dove through layers of colour: at first the water was clear, then bluish, glassy green, and—at the limits of her air—brown. She passed beyond the point of no return, kicking hard, lungs burning. She wanted to gasp, to take a breath, but the water was still all around her, darkening, darker now than the indigo above. She was aware that she had made a mistake, that she was still making that mistake, and that it was perhaps the last mistake she had left.

Sorry, Edwin.

Was the water darkening, or was her vision?

#WIPSnips Sept. 10: "teeth" #WriteSky #WritingCommunity #WritingPrompts #PrairieSFF
I very much remember thinking, as I sat on the tiles at the centre of the roof, If this is a dream, I'd like to wake up.

#

I wrote that last sentence this morning, when I was still half-awake, having only half-read last night's epic. I got awfully *writerly* there, didn't I? I think I *want* someone to read this. Maybe they can help

#

I lost my train of thought there, I think. I remember the oven buzzed right as I wrote—or let's be honest, *scrawled*—the word "help", and between eating supper, and feeding and then walking Fizzgig, and brushing my teeth, I forgot I was in the middle of a sentence. Sorry about that, hypothetical reader.

From a short story currently making the rounds about the lists you make when you're trying to sell a house; the list you give to the realtor and the list no one ever sees. #AmWriting #PrairieSFF
I didn't say anything about the ghost on the third floor, the one who looked like my older sister Sally. She was eleven when she fell down the stairs and fell asleep. That's how Mom explained to me and Ivan what had happened. I was six, Ivan would have been three, and Zinnia had just begun to grow unseen under the skin of Mom's belly.

She fell down the stairs, Mom said, and fell asleep. She didn't wake up.

But she must have woken up, I'd protest later, because I saw her on the third floor. She had a doll wih her, and when she came near me my skin went cold.

"I saw her," I said. "I played with her."

Mom burst into tears and fled from the room. Dad told me not to tell such terrible goddamn lies. That was the first time I heard him curse, and the first and only time I saw his eyes go so dark.

After that I stopped telling anyone when I saw the girl who might be Sally. I aged, and she didn't, and eventually I moved away.

how much AI was used in writing this article, where they call the character "titular" but don't tell you the movie's title for 2½ more ¶s movieweb.com/father-joe-k...
For instance, Luc Besson (Léon: The Professional, The Fifth Element) has written a new mob drama that is, by most accounts, as violent as it is absurd. Directed by Barthélémy Grossmann, the movie is set in New York City in the 1990s. Kiefer Sutherland plays the titular [added note from me: the title is "Father Joe"] religious leader, a man of the cloth by day and an avenging angel by night; TheWrap calls him "Catholic Batman." Decked out in a long, flowing black coat and a cappello romano, Father Joe kills drug dealers to stop them from selling to people under the age of 21, although he also tries to reform some by injecting them with a poison and only giving them the antidote if they show up for mass. He gets more resistance when he tries this technique on mob boss Gio Falcone (Al Pacino).

She remembered sunshine on her face and rain in her hair, she remembered stars and wind and ocean spray. She remembered hotels with their high firm beds and aseptic air conditioning. She remembered sparse snow on sand dunes, the beach pebbles slick with frozen spray. She remembered the smell of myrrh and the classroom it conjured, cartoonish capital letters capering along the top of the green blackboard. She remembered Christmas at the city house, the children (the *grand*children, and how was that possible?) sledding down the hill in the back forty, the tree hung with fragile glass and bubbling lights, garlands and thin strips of silver that flashed and twinkled. She remembered the boys, her sons, having a hushed conversation that stopped when they noticed she'd tottered with her gnarled-wood cane into the room. (Cane? She remembered pain in her hips, her knee, her ankle, but there was no pain anymore.) She remembered the blast of humid heat as she left the mall's climate control, high summer in the city, nothing like it. She remembered lakewater and the faint smell of fish that you never get at the poolside. She remembered Nathan above her, *in* her, naked, both of them sweating in the summer's languid heat, the ceiling fan useless against it. She remembered her father's funeral, the hard ground, the bitter wind, the snow crunching underfoot. She remembered the plane banking over Heathrow at night, seeing London for the first time as jeweled lights glowing softly, diffusely through a mist. She remembered ink on the side of her hand, the left-hander's curse, after signing that first contract, and the second, and after a while it became a ritual, a tradition, a private celebration as the sums on the $______ line grew fatter and fatter. She remembered Peter's terrified face after he'd blurted out "Mom, Dad, I'm gay!" and the way his face cracked as she and Nathan embraced him and they all cried, weeping with love and the collapse of fear into relief. [cont'd][cont'd from first image]

She remembered George's funeral, the bright summer sunshine, the cheery clouds making it seem unreal there could be this much grief in the world. She remembered lightning so bright it was like a flashbulb, so near it was followed by an immediate sizzling *crack!* She remembered winding a scarf around one of the grandchildren, completing the outfit, and then when he said "I need to pee" having to unwind the scarf, unzip the snowsuit, unlace the boots, and stand aside as he dashed upstairs. She remembered

#WIPSsnips Sept. 4: "collapse" #WriteSky #WritingCommunity #WritingPrompts #PrairieSFF
It's 4:30 am. I'm going to go back to bed as soon as I've got this down; it feels like it might be important.

I dreamt that I was in a forest fire. I was safe because I was a ghost, but no one else was. The trees blazed all around me, and I felt the heat of their passing. Animals fled past me, wide-eyed and panicked, predator and prey united in terror. Firefighters sprayed water that turned to steam. Flames jumped from crown to crown. The wind was hot and stank of ash and endings.

I walked unhurt but not unmarked to the edge of a sullen lake whose entire surface had gone black with ash. I watched its lazy undulations for a while, like a pool of oil disturbed by unseen forces. Beneath the ash, beneath the water, I knew that entire ecosystems were collapsing.

When I looked behind me the forest was gone, and it was there (I still can't write the word; why?). Dull red brick, windowless, that lambent arch beckoning.

I blinked, and I was right beside it, almost ready to step onto its flagstone floor. I heard the susurrus, and one voice threaded out of the rest, like someone stage-whispering to be heard above a crowd: «On vous attend au couronne.»

*We're waiting for you at the top.*

It's an amazing little movie, all made in free software (Blender). My favourite fun fact from the movie was this one. www.imdb.com/title/tt4772...
The team was very adamant in getting all of the "voices" to be done by real animals, so they recorded real animals for the movie. To get the capybara sound, the sound engineer had to travel to a zoo and tickle capybaras. However, the real capybara sounds did not match the personality that the capybara character would have, so instead they used a baby camel for this one.

advice from a veterinary manual:

Handling: General considerations

The cat is faster and has sharper teeth and nails than you do. It has no "code of ethics" or considerations in a fight for its own future. In a fair fight it will win.

[these 3 points are highlighted in yellow and written in all caps]

1. DON'T FIGHT A CAT
2. USE YOUR BRAIN
3. USE DRUGS

"Horizon" appears twice in my #WIP and I couldn't decide, so enjoy both ¶s. #WIPSnips #PrairiesSFF
At last I reached the final turn, a grey stone ceiling suddenly appearing above my head, the stairs leading to a square hole like someone had opened a hatch. I could see stars through it, the Little Dipper against a velvety black sky.

And then I was through it. I stood on the wide, flat roof, tiled in the same stone as the floor I'd left so far below me. The air was warm and the breeze was cool. The sky was clear, full of stars. In the northern sky, at the horizon, I thought I could see something moving: maybe the aurora borealis, maybe a hallucination. The sun was near the horizon when I left. There were a couple of fields with combines, toiling away. They'd go as late as they could, I knew, with lights brighter than high-beams. It seemed to me awful late in the year to still be bringing in the crop, but I suppose that's climate change.

In fairness, the actual article basically says "no".
None of this is anything people actually need to be parents. Babies need food, toys, diapers and a regular bath. Those all cost money. If I have to choose between saving for my son’s college and a spreadsheet with a bunch of biometric data, I’m skipping the spreadsheet. I realize, of course, these products are not for me. I don’t have an unlimited supply of disposable income. I have to prioritize and be practical. These devices are for people who optimize every single shred of their daily lives, thinking it will protect them from the reality of failure, illness and death. I’m sorry to report that a $400 camera isn’t going to fix any of that.
