@patrickfreyne.bsky.social I've just reached the God chapter of Experts in a Dying Field and it's so good. It's hard work being omnipotent but he handles it with humour. Love it.

They quoted me in this New Yorker piece about AI today. www.newyorker.com/culture/the-...
“Let’s say there’s a world or time line I exist in where A.I. has been subject to regulation. It is ethical. It has no footprint environmentally,” the novelist Jeff VanderMeer, a prominent critic of A.I., told me over the phone. “With those guardrails in place, would I read an A.I. book? All I can say is no. And the reason is, in part, because I want to read something coming from a particular mind.” Using A.I., he said, “feels like a betrayal of the whole point of why you’re a writer.”

A new hot take: clinical psychologists should assess for "comedy" as a matter of course. So should recruiters, colleges & workplaces. "I'm afraid while this person is by most metrics a genius, we can't take them on because they're just not funny" (unintentionally funny counts)

It's really good. And optimistic. So many of those anti-tech billionaire books are a bit of a shrugged "What can we do?"

If you pick up this book and read even just a page or two, you'll understand immediately why it's doing so well. It's phenomenal. A manual on the fightback for life on Earth.

Today in me being insufferable: A number of the zines and band posters inside that record shop, uh, belonged to me. The HF production design team borrowed* them from myself and other Chicago music scene/record store folks. The More You Know etc [*no I didn't get paid lol, I did it For the Culture]

i worry that men think being A Good Guy is dramatically and heroically intervening on behalf of an endangered woman and then being publicly rewarded on a grand scale when actually being A Good Guy is just usually saying, “hey man that’s not funny” or “wow that’s fucked up” and there is no reward

I enjoyed this piece. People who are evangelical about A.I. really don’t seem to understand — or even appreciate — thinking, human creativity, or what’s important about, basically, everything.

It feels so obvious to me that this tech is stealing something from us at every step - process, understanding, useful frustration, engagement, epiphanies, catharsis, TIME - but I think some people had that stolen already by all the corporate bullshittery so don't see the difference.

I like this notetaking example. it is a good case of how gender works. Notetaking has never been about producing a transcript. It is a bureaucratic skill in the 20th c. organixarion because it is SENSEMAKING. Those women socialized to take notes? They have been doing men’s metacognition for them

But you're not going to get more good journalism if that is also subject to bad faith critiques based on misreading or misunderstanding how newspapers work. Which is why I'm pointing out a bad faith trend based on, I believe, a misunderstanding of how newspapers work.

I never wrote peoples issues with headlines off as "recreational outrage". I wrote some people's issues with headlines off as "recreational outrage" in a different part of the thread. Some people are spot on with their critiques of headlines.

Several things can be true at once & pretending several things can’t be true at once isn’t an answer either. Sometimes publications have misleading/ragebaiting titles & sometimes people are outraged for no good reason. Out informational ecosystem is poisoned by algorithms that hotwire our emotions

I have a theory that we should be presenting heavy taxation and maximum wage limits as a form of medical intervention. "We're taxing you heavily FOR YOUR OWN GOOD"

Patrick Freyne @patrickfreyne.bsky.social · 19/09/2026
I think an issue has also developed where the algorithms have trained people to be recreationally outraged. They don't realise it's recreational, they think it's political, but it's actually just a way to pass the time.

My take on the AI slowdown is they now know internally their product will not lead to AGI & will lead to hacking slop chaos & hence, more worryingly for them, financial ruin. If they act like self-sacrificing "goodies" & slow down it justifies a coming gov bailout www.theguardian.com/technology/2...
