Jensen Huang talks about AI and climate change like a supervillain
It’s giving Thanos energy.

He also claims that the reason we have an electric capacity crunch is that “we got gummed up in climate change and sustainable energy” Maybe someone needs to tell him about the IRA repeal and the billions Trump is shoveling to offshore wind developers to cancel projects.

The hubris, naïveté and ignorance on display here by Huang is staggering. His solution for AI safety is “don’t release unsafe products.” Ezra has to explain to him that the hugging face hack was by an unreleased model. Huang then suggests the solution is to make better sandboxes.

The rise in Niño 3.4 region sea surface temperatures over the past few weeks has been nothing short of astonishing. We are now hotter than any days during the 1997/1998 super El Niño event, and we are still many months from the peak.

$100/kWh for 4-hour grid battery systems in the Middle East. Deploying O(10GWh)/year in the near future, already Texas/California scale installed. Sodium-ion coming soon with lower system cost and 2x cycle life. Batteries are fundamentally changing the grid this decade. 🔌💡 @modoenergy.bsky.social

Fascinating to see all the Chinese EVs around Ireland. BYD taxis everywhere, my girlfriend particularly enjoyed the fact that BYD adopted the backronym “Build Your Dreams.” Bonus EV experience was the double decker bus from downtown Dublin to the airport. That beast of a bus pulled hard! 🔌💡

I think the next closest thing in terms of distance from the thermodynamic limit that humans do is food production. Probably around O(100) from the limit for vegans and O(1000) from the limit for meat rich diets.

Everything humans do with energy is near the thermodynamic limit except computation. The fact that we are O(1,000,000) away from Landauer’s limit means disruptive technology will eventually arrive and the AI bubble will pop. All these AI data centers will become stranded assets.

I’m assuming these batteries’ max continuous power output is ~10kW, so 2000 of them adds ~20MW to the Chicago grid. This would represent a significant fraction of the total battery capacity in PJM! Very cool that they are being used to instantly lower residential costs. The batteries are coming :)

The bar chart is… not to scale. Gas should be 10x longer than solar and coal should be 2x longer than gas. If it’s a log x-axis it really shouldn’t be.

Big batteries are finally coming to PJM! Not sure where this $250M number is coming from, but if it is the BESS CAPEX then this thing is ~$1.70/W (very competitive with CTs!) and $420/kWh (still a lot higher than what a similar system would cost in China) 🔌💡

I’ve been trying to explain this to people for years! Describing battery “duration” as the shortest possible time they can discharge energy is misleading. They can discharge almost arbitrarily slowly if you pay them to!

The promise of AI is big but the current reality is bleak. People are understandably upset about it. Data centers are contributing significantly to near term electricity cost increases in parts of the country. Someday they may be flexible and help drive down costs but they aren’t doing it yet.
000
patrickbryant.page @patrickbryant.page · 27/05/2026
I think people are upset because they see big data centers going up, running jet turbines without pollution permits, and mostly running sycophantic LLMs and generating slop. A lot of the claims he made about AI doing good things are tiny models that run on a laptop.

Thus while the bidirectionality of a power electronics transformer is an engineered and controlled feature, for a traditional transformer it is a consequence of physical law and the physical configuration of the device.
000
patrickbryant.page @patrickbryant.page · 10/04/2026
Transistors are fundamentally unidirectional power flow devices but they can be combined together into power electronics systems where power flow and voltage from multiple sources, AC or DC, can be controlled with software!
120
patrickbryant.page @patrickbryant.page · 10/04/2026
Transformers are fundamentally bidirectional power flow devices but the direction power flows is not determined by the transformer itself.
100
patrickbryant.page @patrickbryant.page · 10/04/2026
Transformers leverage the fundamental relationship between electricity and magnetism to trade AC current for voltage and vice versa. Power flows through them are determined entirely by the laws of physics, there is no built in control.
100
patrickbryant.page @patrickbryant.page · 10/04/2026
This is so exciting! If the data center power crunch results in scaling power electronics for distributed energy that would be a huge win for the future of the grid. Traditional transformers are truly incredible bits of physics that make our grid work, but they are also inherently inflexible!
