@michael-hoerger.bsky.social you see the new update? ~200 sites are transferring over to Verily as of 28 Sept - so we’re most likely going to have a large data pause of sites for a minimum of 8 weeks - which pushes us through to/past the peak of the winter wave period.

NWSS announcement “CDC competitively awarded a new wastewater testing contract to Verily on September 28, 2026. There will be a brief gap in wastewater data affecting ~200 sites as sampling, testing, and reporting are restarted.”

Lost in the chaos of everything; last week CDC (yes, this current CDC!) issued guidance for COVID vaccination. Last year they recommended vaccination based on "shared decision making." This year it's a stronger recommendation: "COVID-19 vaccine is recommended for all adults ages 18 years and older"

At a glance

Two types of COVID-19 vaccines are recommended for use in the United States: mRNA vaccines (Moderna and Pfizer-BioNTech) and a protein subunit vaccine (Novavax; now manufactured by Sanofi US Inc).
A 2026-2027 COVID-19 vaccine is recommended for all adults ages 18 years and older.
A 2026-2027 COVID-19 vaccine is also recommended for all children ages 6 months–17 years with moderate to severe immunocompromise; for all other children in this age group, a COVID-19 vaccine is recommended through shared clinical decision-making.

Vaccination reminder. Updated Covid-19 and flu vaccines are available. I was able to get the new updated Moderna Covid-19 vaccine (first time diverging from Pfizer for that). Got it in opposite arms, keeping my covid and flu arms the same. Some research shows this can help enhance responsiveness

Weird combination of errors today - computer went into an auto do not disturb mode (which I never set, so must have been an update thing) , which blocked signal to the 3d printer. So wasted about 45 minutes troubleshooting something that I only saw inadvertently from my computer’s daily log.

Adding in another thing you can do - I was on the CDC NWSS page today (the color map shown), and they are doing a survey currently on that page. I wrote a paragraph explaining these types of things with reccs of what to do better in the very last part of the survey. Something to try at least 🤷🏻‍♂️

The US has at least 29 states/territories with COVlD outbreaks. These include much of Hawai’i, Alaska, Washington, California, Nevada, Arizona, New Mexico, Texas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, Georgia, Florida, Guam, Puerto Rico, the US Virgin Islands, Missouri, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, South Carolina, North Carolina, Virginia, West Virginia, New Jersey, Connecticut, Rhode Island, Massachusetts, and Maine.
There are likely outbreaks in additional states. The summary statistic of 29 only includes counties with observed data, rather than estimated data. All of the data in Oregon are at least a week old, and while we do not count the state among the 29, we estimate there are likely outbreaks there as well, given proximity to WA, CA, and NV. Levels in some Texas counties are so high – on par with the national peak of BA.1 Omicron – that it drives up estimates for counties in neighboring states that lack CDC wastewater monitoring systems. Looking closely at the map, notice other instances of Very High counties in one state driving up estimates of an adjacent county in a neighboring state that lacks data. This shows a clear value of the county-level map over the CDC state map. The CDC applies the median level to the entire state. The PMC map recognizes that state boundaries are somewhat artificial with regard to the spread of infectious disease and instead offers localized estimates for counties that lack data based on what is happening in their region.

After months of presumably low Covid-19 levels - barring some sort of signal attenuation from new variants (confounding variable) - we are starting to see some early activity from the Kinston, North Carolina facility. Also, 99% chance growing Covid activity from ED visits.

Fourteen more PJ.2.1 wastewater detections. It is dominant in many sites. NYC (8), Maui (2). Maine, Virginia, Florida and DC. No obvious uptick in cases in any of these places that I could find though.

This chronic-infection variant now has a name: PJ.2.1. You can see how divergent it is from other current lineages in the @neher.io/Roemer BA.2.86 tree below. ORF6 is a SARS-2 protein that shuts down traffic between the nucleus & cytoplasm in host cells, inhibiting host mRNA export & immune responses. But in all variants since early 2023, ORF6's abilities are hampered by the ORF6:D61L mutation. Two newish ORF6 observations.... 1/15

My favorite everyday engineering marvel is the sweet spot designed into urinals that are there to make minimal/no sound and make it near impossible to have any splash back. It’s typically a tiny dot placed about 4 inches up from the basin. Something I learned in graduate-level fluid dynamics
