my current marathon personal best would allow me to qualify if I were 55 years old... but something tells me in 25 years' time you would have to run a sub-3h as a 55 year old to qualify (well or we could no longer run outdoor road marathons thanks to climate change)

very unlikely to have even originated in Thailand given how weirdly AI generated it is and basic mistakes like surely you would advertise in Thai Baht (makes the equivalent sum even more impressive) and know that locally it is more common for people to think in terms of monthly not annual salaries

Gave my favorite lecture today: Death of Stalin to Khrushchev Secret Speech to the Kitchen Debate. Students found Nikita Sergeyevich most entertaining even with the competing aura of Nixon in this era of renewed Nixon-Maxxing. They really do not make statesmen like Khrushchev anymore.

Apropos nothing, definitely not a threat made by a head of state at the UNGA today, but here is the first line of the UN Charter: "we the people of the United Nations determined to save succeeding generations from the scourge of war, which twice in our lifetime has brought untold sorrow to mankind."

Konrad Jarausch passed earlier this month. He was an extraordinary scholar of mod. Germany. I was on many diss. committees with him, and I greatly respected his intellect and his keen insight into helping students progress. UNC is lesser without him. obits.endswellfuneralhome.com/konrad-jarau...

If she is successful I wonder if this launches her into federal politics whenever she wants to do so, since she would be the only proven one to lead the SPD at a level competitive enough with the AfD and potentially beating them...

MeckPomm does provide the rare straight up red vs blue matchup here. Since Schwesig has been able to keep up, it is pretty clear she will be able to form the next government just what kind of coalition, but if she is able to finish ahead of the AfD that would be a massive morale boost for the SPD.

I don’t think I quite have it, but there is something here about this prevalent usage of GLP-1s occurring at the same time as LLMs… the idea that some of them see using GLP-1s as “cheating,” but then also do so anyway or feel that they must do so to not fall behind sounds similar to student AI use.

baffles me to no end that our lovely leaders pretend we are competitive with peer institutions when we literally have a university just on the other side of the interstate that pays their graduate students double for very little to none service obligations

“why are you finding it so difficult that we ask you to do the same work (except it has to be much better now than dissertations in the past to be competitive on the market), with less time, with (net, enforced hours limit, adjusted for inflation) less money?”

also no undergrad wants to move to eastwood anyways, the local NIMBYs really do need to chill... unless you live in a franklin-rosemary/cameron-mccauley mcmansion then yes you should have been replaced by a high-rise yesterday

well they seem to be all against those of us supporting clubs not owned by a sovereign wealth fund of a country that hires the referees to go hangout there during the summer holidays... 🤔

if you think it was a clear and obvious error then the referee had to book bethi for simulation there but he did not so he clearly still thought that there was contact and she went down and he called it a pen in real time—in no sane understanding of the law is this a reversible call

is the united states supreme court in charge of the IFAB laws of the game these days because it really does seem like we have no laws just vibes

Pasuth Thothaveesansuk @pasuth.info · 13/09/2026
if FA and/or PGMOL does not come out saying that this was the wrong call then we are going to get terrible precedents from this—basically declaring open season on playing decoy in violation of the offside laws as long as you manage to keep your leg hair from touching the ball

can’t rmb if it was explicitly mentioned but TJ included Judaism and Islam in what he meant as different faiths to be protected by the VA Statute for Religious Freedom and I think he had read and owned a copy of the Quran… not sure if he ever wrote anything at length about Islam though

Since we are at the beginning of yet another football season, does anyone have any advice as to where I should list my numerous fantasy football championships on my CV? Right before peer-reviewed publications, perhaps?

In memoriam of Konrad Jarausch, my first in-person interaction with him:

My first week I was honestly quite terrified of meeting him and I think I was visibly shaking introducing myself to him. He said “it’s okay, I know you. I know your file… but not in the Stasi way.”

When I decided to come to Carolina first wanting to do something related to German history, one of the reasons I chose to do so was Konrad Jarausch. He was the ideal example of a great scholar and an even better man. He will be missed—may his memory be a blessing. dailytarheel.com/480137/unive...

Maybe denaturalization would work here? I suppose there is then another question of nationality (used in UDHR) vs citizenship here, but probably more or less interchangeable in terms of the harms the AfD intends to inflict here.

Journalists need to start reporting this as a policy of ethnic cleansing… enough with accepting the far right’s euphemistic premise of “remigration” or whatever. Now that I think about it, “cleansing” too is somewhat of a euphemism…
