Gave my favorite lecture today: Death of Stalin to Khrushchev Secret Speech to the Kitchen Debate. Students found Nikita Sergeyevich most entertaining even with the competing aura of Nixon in this era of renewed Nixon-Maxxing. They really do not make statesmen like Khrushchev anymore.

Apropos nothing, definitely not a threat made by a head of state at the UNGA today, but here is the first line of the UN Charter: "we the people of the United Nations determined to save succeeding generations from the scourge of war, which twice in our lifetime has brought untold sorrow to mankind."

Konrad Jarausch passed earlier this month. He was an extraordinary scholar of mod. Germany. I was on many diss. committees with him, and I greatly respected his intellect and his keen insight into helping students progress. UNC is lesser without him. obits.endswellfuneralhome.com/konrad-jarau...

Since we are at the beginning of yet another football season, does anyone have any advice as to where I should list my numerous fantasy football championships on my CV? Right before peer-reviewed publications, perhaps?

When I decided to come to Carolina first wanting to do something related to German history, one of the reasons I chose to do so was Konrad Jarausch. He was the ideal example of a great scholar and an even better man. He will be missed—may his memory be a blessing. dailytarheel.com/480137/unive...

As baffling and enraging as this absurd war on bike lanes is, it is always worth remembering that this is not just a US story. The transnational right has an obsession with eliminating bike lanes and endangering as many cyclists (and pedestrians) as possible. See also: Berlin CDU, Ontario Tories...

This is why we have to take seriously the liberal part of liberal empire and liberal internationalism. If you hate liberalism then you would also hate this version of empire and internationalism. Many people who study this often refuse to take liberalism seriously (or hate it themselves.)

an der schönen, blauen, trockenen donau… seems bad when the climate crisis is at such a level that the relatively clean energy generating option no longer works (cf hydroelectric dams also not being able to work during a drought) and so we must burn fossil fuels to stay alive in the climate crisis…
Hungary’s prime minister warned that the country’s only nuclear-power station could be shut down as soon as this weekend because of Europe’s heatwave. The Danube river, which supplies water used to cool the facility, has dropped to its lowest level in years. The site is responsible for around 40% of the country’s electricity; the second of its four reactors was shut on Saturday.

I think nations of the world should unite to establish a general international organization to save succeeding generations from the scourge of war, reaffirm faith in human rights, and promote social progress and better standards of life in larger freedom.

The IOC pretending that this was over the Russian NOC operating in occupied territories is absurd. If that was the case then Russia would have been banned since 2014. We all know where the international community drew the line and the IOC followed. Now the IOC is bowing to powerful reactionaries.

Apropos absolutely nothing, definitely not about inclement weather affecting a wanna-be-emperor’s fête, I think the Duke of Zhou wrote a few millennia ago something along the lines of: Heaven is not constant and very difficult to rely upon; the Mandate of Heaven is not easily preserved.

The corridor chat is an interesting point. On one hand we have been losing traditional genres of evidence for historians i.e. paper memos, minute sheets, diaries, but on the other hand these chats we used to rely on post hoc recollection to know about are now being recorded live on email/WhatsApp.

I will never experience anything that could ever match watching the UVA 2019 men’s basketball national championship run. It was my fourth and final year in Charlottesville, after the first round exit the year before, and the crushing Elite 8 loss two years before that. Joy did come in the morning.

"History does not appear solely as a record of human violence, but also as evidence that humanity is capable of creating institutions that protect our shared life."
123. History does not appear solely as a record of human violence, but also as evidence that humanity is capable of creating institutions that protect our shared life. Over the past two centuries, this can be seen in several emblematic achievements: the founding of the International Committee of the Red Cross (1863), whose operational neutrality ensures compassionate care for all; the long process that led to the abolition of slavery, which represented not only a legal shift but a transformation of conscience; the establishment of the United Nations (1945) and the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (1948), which articulated a shared language for affirming, at least as a common ideal, the universality of human dignity; and the 1951 Refugee Convention, which recognizes the duty to protect those fleeing persecution and danger. In each of these cases, the desire for good took concrete shape in public contexts — laws, institutions and practices — capable of limiting the abuse of power and defending the vulnerable. Yet none of these developments emerged without encountering resistance, narrow interests or cultural inertia. Moral progress almost always unfolds through a long and demanding journey, often marked by setbacks. We need only think of stalled peace processes or the slow implementation of environmental commitments. The very fragility of these achievements highlights how precious the responsibility is of those who initiate and sustain them.
