A portfolio piece I did for my SmArtSchool class this semester.

An illustration of a rabbit made of carved wood, surrounded by a branching circle of carved wooden vines. The rabbit has a silver arrow piercing through its heart.

Hello #PortfolioDay! I'm Julie, a freelance fantasy artist. And I finally have some new pieces that aren't under an NDA! 😅

A man sits on rocks near the ocean shore, looking wistfully off in the distance.

A man flies through the clouds, looking concerned; he seems to have some degree of control over the wind.

A floating stone head of a minotaur, its base shattered and crumbling. Behind it on a wall is a golden symbol of a labyrinth.

A montage image with a cityscape on the lower part of the image and a raven above, with a swirling line of fire and smoke weaving through the image and the raven's beak.

Added a gradient map to set the mood and see what'd stick. This is a good place to start. Will continue working on this as I go. Pretty happy with it so far. And yes, that is indeed a literal 'cloud guitar'. Don't ask me, ask the person whose LFA I'm making. xD

4 years ago I drew another version of Orella (on the right) and I was just so unhappy with how it came out, but I felt like I lacked the skills to make it better. I'm quite happy with the remade version (left). The idea is that she enters through a door, as dawn breaks and is super badass.

Guess who found 10 year old paintings tucked away in a long forgotten HDD? This guy! I thought it'd be fun to show where I was 10 years ago vs where I'm now. I'm quite happy with my progress! Left is 2013 when I started taking art a bit more seriously. Right is where I'm at right now.

Throughout the years I've redesigning Orella over and over again. It started out as an idea and a sketch, which turned into this concept that became very special to me, both personal and cultural. Here's Orella of the Dawn throughout the years, from 2017 till 2023. Check out the ALT texts too.

Initial concept in 2017. I loved the idea of some legendary fighter joining the fight and could tip the scales in any given fight, no matter how strong the opposition.

About a year later I redesigned some things, but I wanted to keep that same level of overpowered-ness. Something like... being met by a stormfront and knowing you'll lose, no matter what.

It was here I was struggling both in real life and in my artworks. I asked myself; "Who am I, really? Does my (ethnical) appearance have anything to do with how I should lead my life?"
I felt uncomfortable with a lot of the things I drew during this time, never happy with how things were drawn. 2019 was the year I produced the least amount of drawings, ever. I had an identity crisis, both IRL and in art.

But still, I wanted to push forward and I started to link Orella to my personal life. What if she too, was going through all these issues? So, I redesigned her completely to be this Chinese Sword master that was as calm as the wind.

And here we are, in 2022/23. I realized that my ethnic background shouldn't stop me from achieving the things I want to achieve, nor should it give me any unfair privileges over others. I'm simply me, and so should Orella be. She is who she wants to be and who she wants to become, not what people around her tell her.

I managed to let go of this fear of NEEDING to do something with my ethnicity in my stories. Instead, of focused on what struggles I had with my ethnicity throughout the years and used that experience to recreate the story and design of Orella.

Homebrew WIP: A Sadiran Priestess from the continent of Sadira. They're strong devotees of Pelor, often making pilgrimages to different cities in Sadira to bless the crops and the cities to prevent droughts. They're mostly kind and soft natured, but will always put their pilgrimage first.
