Well, I for one am an economist who supports rent controls! Here’s why 🧵: Markets only work well if: -buyers & sellers have roughly equal power -producers respond to price signals & expand supply in response to scarcity -buyers can walk away if prices get too high

This summer's heatwaves killed more than 35,000 extra people across Europe, mostly elderly and low-income. Von der Leyen's response in her State of the Union? "We must capture this market." Sustained public investment is what's needed. A market opportunity is what von der Leyen offers.
Quote graphic by Corporate Europe Observatory. A black-and-white photo of Pascoe Sabido, researcher and campaigner, appears on the right. The quote reads: 'Curbing global heating is not a win-win or a business opportunity and requires tough measures like phasing out fossil fuels. That's why Europe's oil and gas industry has fought them tooth and nail. But this speech gives that industry and its allies a helping hand by announcing it will speed up permitting approvals and slash so-called administrative burdens. Those so-called burdens are in fact laws that protect our air and water quality, and speeding up permitting will stop communities being able to say no to new gas pipelines or energy-guzzling data centres. This undermines climate action but also tramples on local democracy. By the end of this Parliament, expect to see record deaths from global heating and record low trust in Europe’s political class.

#SOTEU : while Europe faces social, environmental and geopolitical pressures, it's funny how the solution always happens to be exactly what corporate lobbyists have been asking for, and they already have more access to EU decision-making than anyone. Here's our take on AI, deregulation and climate👇
Quote graphic by Corporate Europe Observatory. A black-and-white photo of Bram Vranken, researcher and campaigner, appears on the right. The quote reads: 'Never before has the call for regulating AI been stronger. But instead of enforcing EU rules to keep unaccountable tech companies in check, the EU is intent on slashing data protection and rules on AI. Ironically, in her State of the Union, von der Leyen claims the importance of guardrails, but ignores the fact that the EU Commission has teamed up with the tech industry to deregulate the digital rule-book.

Heard about new fossil gas plants being built to power AI data centres? Maybe some PR about their emissions being captured & stored? Tip: Don't fall for empty promises from companies that produce+sell gas, that a technology they’ve been failing to deliver for decades, will soon make gas “clean” ⬇️
Image of an origami paper tiger, accompanied by text that says: "Carbon capture is a paper tiger. New fossil fuel infrastructure for data centres is not going to be 'decarbonised' by a costly, risky, and failed technology. Even its proponents won't pay for it... and will sue if they're actually required to build it. New gas just means new emissions."
