I’m sorry, troop Brad Pitt and his troop dog fighting through the wilderness to learn lessons about loyalty, grit, and what it means to be a man (and/or dog and/or troop) feels like a parody of something. It’s like a movie somehow written by this t-shirt
An army green t-shirt with black print on it that says “ME WHEN SOMEONE TALKS SHIT ABOUT MY DOG…” above a line drawing of a cowboy holding a gun. A bullet appears to be flying from the gun, and black text around it says “BANG!!” and “BANG!!!”

My husband crocheted some Cthulhus to help promote his new book Kevin the Werewolf. (Available where fine books are sold a.co/d/0fHoLJVH) This is our only plan to defeat AI, so boy i hope it works!
A row of three crochet stuffie Cthulhus—a winged tentacle-faced monster). They are spookycute.

I did the same and got this count. This is without the drink, so probably a total of 3000 calories, so a day and a half’s worth of food. I guess it could be the normal everyday lunch of like, Michael Phelps in training season?
A screen shot showing the nutrition information for the meal under discussion. It lists a total of 2700 calories, 146g of fat, 86g of protein, and 255g carbs.

Reading The Grapes of Wrath for the first time. It hits.
An excerpt from the Grapes of Wrath that reads:

And the great owners, who must lose their land in an upheaval, the great owners with access to history, with eyes to read history and to know the great fact: when property accumulates in too few hands it is taken away. And that companion fact: when a majority of the people are hungry and cold they will take by force what they need. And the little screaming fact that sounds through all history: repression works only to strengthen and knit the repressed. The great owners ignored the three cries of history. The land fell into fewer hands, the number of the dispossessed increased, and every effort of the great owners was directed at repression. The money was spent for arms, for gas to protect the great holdings, and spies were sent to catch the murmuring of revolt so that it might be stamped out.

I thought this bit from @resnikoff.bsky.social in publiccomment.blog/p/hyperfascism was really insightful.
A passage that reads: “The fact that all of this is being done for the sake of spectacle sometimes leads liberal elected officials and talking heads to mistake it for a “distraction” from real issues like the Epstein files or the price of gas. But that’s a mistake, and not only because the spectacle of ICE raids ruins real human lives. Spectacle is not a distraction from Trump’s real agenda; it is Trump’s real agenda. That does not make it any less dangerous. In some ways it is more dangerous, because the logic of spectacle is the logic of constant escalation.”

Love when the skyline produces this kind of synchronicity
A picture of two posts on a Bluesky timeline. One, by Michael Lobel reads: “Question for the art historians: what work of art makes you feel like you need to take an injury leave due to stress?”

Below it, as if in reply, is a post from a MoMA paintings account that shows a photograph of the 1983 Mel Bochner work called Atoll.

The AVAM’s Kinetic Sculpture Race is one of the best days in Baltimore every year. Beautiful weather for watching the sculptures hit the water!
A human-powered sculpture shaped like The Roadrunner (of Coyote & Roadrunner) prepares to enter the harbor. A race official in a funny hat stands in front of the sculpture with his hand up. A human-powered sculpture shaped like a dragon guarding a castle prepares to enter the harbor. A race official in a funny hat and holding a purple trombone inspects the safety gear of the riders. A human-powered sculpture piloted by several adults in costumes referencing characters from Winnie the Pooh prepares to enter the harbor. The sculpture includes a big tree with autumnal foliage and has large inflatable padding over its tires. A race official in a funny hat inspects the safety gear as another race official dressed as a chicken looks on. A human-powered sculpture seen from the back as it prepares to enter the harbor. The body of the sculpture is white and evokes a fish skeleton. Several adults ride inside of it. The wheels are large orange plastic with fins on, designed for buoyancy and propulsion in the water.

A version of the “goose chase” meme

In the top panel, a goose asks “who is going to collect ‘the scores’?”

In the bottom panel, the goose is shown chasing a fleeing human figure, asking “who is going to do all that testing, Linda?!?”

I need y’all to understand that the plan to fix education by eliminating the Department of Education follows the same logic as fixing COVID-19 by not testing people for COVID. “The statistics are brutal” so let’s not collect them any longer!
A screen shot of a tweet. Tiffany Justice tweeted “Only 31% of 8th graders are proficient in reading. 30% are ‘below basic’ readers- functionally illiterate” Vivek Ramaswamy retweeted Tiffany with this commentary added “This is a 5-alarm fire & President Trump’s vision to dismantle the Department of Education is the first step to fixing it. The federal bureaucracy has wasted boatloads of taxpayer $$ while impeding the success of our students. The statistics below are downright brutal.”

A lot of takes getting baked right now based on polls showing voters are largely dissatisfied with the economy. And maybe there’s merit there. But ask yourself, would your takes be different if voter appraisal of the economy flips to strongly approving at 12:01 PM on 1/20/2025? It’s happened before.
A graph that shows the % of respondents who rate national economic conditions as excellent or good from 2016 to 2020, divided by party. The line for Republican/Lean Republican shows a sharp increase from 2016 (18%) to 2020 (81%). The line for Democratic/Democratic Leaning is mainly flat.

My favorite day of the year! The Kinetic Sculpture Race was amazing, despite the weather. Another of the many reasons I love Baltimore.
Fifi, a giant sculptural human-powered vehicle, is made of lots of pink tulle and resembles a cartoon poodle.A Kinetic Sculpture Race official dressed as a chicken wearing a tailcoat embellished like a Mondrian paintingDetail shot of a human-powered sculptural vehicle that resembles a bathtime rubber duck wearing pink heart-shaped glasses, with multicolored curly hair and a black hatA human-powered sculptural vehicle covered with multi-colored human cut outs, inspired by Kieth Haring’s iconic style.
