Economist's slump

Sharing the green room at Jewish Book Week with neuroscientist Dr Daniel Glaser, we discussed the occasions when his expertise has been called upon at the scene of an accident.
I told him about the time my friend was in an airport lounge and someone rushed in shouting: "Is there an economist here?" Feeling proud that his "Is there a doctor in the house?" moment had arrived, my friend stood up and said: "Yes, I'm an economist."

The man glared at him and added very slowly: "The magazine."

I did what I thought was a very wry and funny spreadsheet joke, and it seems to have fallen completely flat among my colleagues and coworkers. It’s either too nerdy or just to close to the truth amongst our overworked team of business analysts and developers.
Two spreadsheet cells.
One says Work/Life Balance:
The other has #DIV/0! Which is the Microsoft Excel error flag for a division by zero error.

The Phantom of Heilbronn, also referred to as the Woman Without a Face, was a presumed female serial killer whose existence was inferred from DNA evidence found at 40 crime scenes across Austria, France and Germany from 1993 to 2009.

In March 2009, investigators concluded that the supposed serial killer did not exist, and the DNA belonged to a woman who worked at a factory that made the cotton swabs used for collecting DNA samples

I understand why they're doing this, but fuck them. These mayors can't guarantee the safety of their own citizens from ICE, and they sure as hell can't guarantee the safety of Canadian visitors. Also, North Dakota, where 2/3 of voters voted for Trump, wants foreigners to come back? Fuck them twice.

Somehow, despite hope, I fear apathy and the market will pull us back into the same trap next time they have a sane president, and we’ll learn the lesson all over again when, after that, they elect another right wing demagogue. 🤷‍♂️

It’s frustrating because we still need the US market for our goods, and we import a lot if perhaps a little less now, and it will be years before we can diversify enough away from the US. I just hope we’ve learned our lesson to never depend or rely on the US again.

It’s like someone is taking crazy pills. Trump’s “manifest destiny” drive is forcing him to aggressively try to control countries in the North American hemisphere. Tying an exemption from our bilingual language laws and a veto over our other trade agreements to a US trade deal is not normal. At all.
100
Parker Benchley 🇨🇦 @parkebench.bsky.social · 02/10/2026
Which is absurd because the only reason we have a balance of trade issue with the US is because they buy a lot of our oil, gas and other energy resources. With everything else, including services, the US sells Canada far more than Canada sells to the US.

Parker Benchley 🇨🇦 @parkebench.bsky.social · 02/10/2026
But Trump can dig in like a bulldog if he’s confronted or told he is forbidden from doing something. When SCOTUS blocked his emergency tariffs, he pounced on the never-used Smoot-Hawley tariffs from the ‘30s and decided to make Canada his whipping boy.

Parker Benchley 🇨🇦 @parkebench.bsky.social · 02/10/2026
Not to mention try to rile us up with all his 51st State BS, then throwing a bunch of illegal tariffs on us. PM Carney circulated the bond selling idea among the allies and of course they made sure it leaked. TACO Trump backs down when someone on his team tells him what he’s risking.
100
Parker Benchley 🇨🇦 @parkebench.bsky.social · 02/10/2026
Canada pushed back on Trump because the US is our largest trading partner, and we had just been through another trade agreement cycle in 2019 when Trump signed and promoted “The greatest trade deal ever!” with Canada and Mexico and we couldn’t believe what he was now proposing.
100
Parker Benchley 🇨🇦 @parkebench.bsky.social · 02/10/2026
Of course it’s not - it’s a tax in the importer and will be passed on the the eventual consumer, as a regressive tax. It can be offset somewhat if the exporter drops their prices, but it tends to raise domestic prices even on non imported goods. I’m sure you know all this explicitly.
100
Parker Benchley 🇨🇦 @parkebench.bsky.social · 02/10/2026
The thing is Trump has always had a 19th century view and understanding of tariffs, viewing as a source of income that could replace income tax. I mean yes, it can be that, but he firmly believes, or projects to his followers, that its income gathered from the foreign exporter.

The original ‘90s free trade agreement with the US did enough of a number on our manufacturing and over the years we’ve slid into more of a raw materials position in trade. The automotive sector is still large and has been entwined with the US’s since agreements in the ‘60s.

Did you ever have a chance to explore if you have DSPD? I’ve been having some luck microdosing melatonin. 10mg ruins my next day, even 1mg messes everything up, but 300 mcg added to my 9:30pm pills has helped shift my average usual bedtime to 1 am +/- an hour from 3am +/- an hour.

We can learn from our queer elders 🫶🏻

when my masc lesbian aunt died, women just kept coming, screaming, crying, and saying they were her wives. Eventually we just had to start telling them to join the others. They were all devastated to learn about each other. Except for one who came in, kissed her dead mouth and showed us all that they had matching tattoos. She actually won all the mourning wives over and they all agreed she was the wife. It was so weird.Did not expect more than a few people to see this but yes it really happened, yes it was insane

The Facial Expressions of Tethys by artist Julius von Bismarck. A suspended high-sea buoy that moves in real time. Sensors on a twin buoy out in the Atlantic Ocean send live satellite data to motors inside the museum. This makes the indoor buoy copy the exact, real-time movements of the ocean waves.
