There’s a full moon out tonight! 🌕 If you’d like a werecreature story with subversion of the uncontrollability theme, strange cellular biology, and a bag of shed human teeth… here you go! parisvivian.itch.io/the-claws-of-the-ounce (All art mine.) #BookSky #UrbanFantasy #DarkFantasy 💙📚🪐🌃📚🩸
A digital drawing of Ash, a young, thin white woman with a grey-and-black bob cut and amber eyes. She is standing with her head tilted forward, a very tired / dejected expression on her face, as a disembodied hand holds a translucent full moon in front of her right eye. On the dark grey background behind her, curving up in an arc over her head, are the phases of the moon, with the full moon replaced by her eye in a circle of snow leopard fur.A digital art piece showing Orion, a white man with short brown hair and green eyes, sitting behind a table. He leans over an open book, frowning as he draws something on a diagram with his pen. A messy stack of papers lays to the side. To the right of him is a close-up of the diagram: it's an anatomical diagram showing Ash's digestive organs, heart, lungs, and brain.
He's drawn dotted lines around her liver to indicate it should be larger, and through her small intestine to indicate it should be shorter.

I regret to inform everyone that Flashes (the BlueSky Instagram equivalent) appears to be using genAI 😞 They posted this pic with the trademark garbled text last month. Seriously, why? (And the rest of the pic looks totally fine, it’s scary.) #NoAI #AntiAI
A screenshot of a post from Flashes App’s official BlueSky account, talking about introducing push notifications. At the bottom of the pic is a push notification used for an example; the letters of the second half of the example account’s name, which I’ve circled in blue, distorted in the usual “AI generating text” manner.

Decided that in addition to an “Austroraptor”, she’s also the creator’s not-very-covert attempt at a “spinosaurid”. (For the most part, only smaller dinosaurs were made bc of space limits.) Not 100% sure how I feel about the croc teeth. #OC #dinosaur #bird #avian #CreatureDesign #SciFiArt #scalie

#AwesomeCharacters Both Taryn and Hollis from the Verdantland Trilogy are bisexual! Taryn’s signature hourglass necklace was a gift from an ex-boyfriend, and she’s currently dating a woman (Florence). Have a snippet where Florence gives her some f/f romance recs.
“This was my favourite novel from last year.” Florence pulled a thick book from the centre of the right shelf. On its cover was an illustration of a paint palette hanging from a garland of cerise flowers. “It’s about a woman who has to lift a curse put on her and her painting business. As she travels across the land, she falls for her guide, a seamstress who can talk to plants.”
“Nice.” Taryn took the book, feeling its weight in her hands.
“Here’s another book I really loved.” Florence stood on her tiptoes to take another tome. This one was thinner, its cover a beautiful photograph of blue-green waves foaming against rocks. “Partly because it’s set in Acropora, and one of the main characters lives in the same district as my mom! It’s about three people who meet the Winged Woman of the Sea.”

Actually nvm, I’ll post the images too.
The cover for A. C. Harper’s The Shoreline, showing a boy standing on a lake shore at sunset with an empty canoe in front of him. It is in a stereotypical “AI style” and has anomalies like wildly inconsistent post sizes on the pier (which apparently doesn’t attach to the shore) and a too-short paddle(?) lying in the canoe. The cover for The Inbetween by the same author. It shows a boy sitting and typing at a desktop, shown from behind at a 3/4 angle like in the last picture. Everything is blurry and there’s a “piss filter” effect.Old cover for The Inbetween, showing the MC and his socially imposed “girl self” (he’s a trans boy) sitting on a couch with a desktop behind. In the foreground is a bizarrely detached keyboard. The image is painfully old “realistic” AI style, I don’t quite know how to put it in words.

You can add A. C. Harper to the list 🥲 Obviously stereotypically AI covers and promo images and “off” responses to other people’s posts. (You can easily find the images in his media tab, so I’m just posting a couple examples of the responses.)
Post from me reading: Me in promo posts for TCotO: It’s got carni-cuisine! Ash in the chapter I just finished editing: “Breakfast was two tins of tuna choked down with ice water.”
A. C. Harper’s response: Carni-cuisine sounds deliciously chaotic. What dish does Ash swear by, carnival classic or culinary horror?A reply by A. C. Harper to someone else, reading: Heck yeah, loving the mix of truth, queerness, science and stories. If you’re into coming-of-age or queer vibes, check out The Inbetween or The Shoreline on Kindle Unlimited (purple heart emoji) (stack of books emoji).

Question for other #autistic people: when you look at a projection (from a movie projector or such), do you see RGB bars in your peripheral vision if you move your eyes to look at something else or focus on another part of the “screen“? Wondering if this is related to quicker visual processing.
Three squares in pure RGB display colours next to each other, forming a strip. Eyestrain warning.

#WIPSnips A snippet from Forest in a Shadow Box! Waiting for an aerial performance to start 👀🦋
“I hope the show’ll start ahead of schedule,” he muttered. His short hair, the same green hue as the fuzz on his wings, barely blew in his attempt at a breeze. “I’m boiling over here.”
“What will that change?” Alba asked. “It’s not like the performers’ wingwinds will make a difference from this distance.”
“It’ll distract me from this heat.”
“Fair.”

Here’s the full first 2 paragraphs:
If you asked Machaon to pinpoint the moment when his mother had become a monster, he wouldn’t be able to do so. Pins and points were her thing, not his, and anyway there wasn’t a single action or conversation he could look back on and pierce a needle through. It had kind of crept up on him.
All he knew for certain was that the first time he’d seen her walk that path was on the afternoon following the forest conservation fundraiser.

#WIPSnips Decided to do “fangs”! Have part of Aharceot’s intro in Apricot Sun.
Her lips peeled back to bare thin blood-red fangs. She spoke in a voice that was barely tied together, her jaws so visibly aching to snap but instead being forced to settle for the piddling act of forming words.
“Hand over the idol.”
(The word “snap” is italicized).

If you stretch the definition of “cat” to include all Felidae: Ash, MC of The Claws of the Ounce, is a snow wereleopard who discovered the fact the night after her abusive parents kicked her out. She spends most of the story ruled by trauma-born self-hatred ☹️ Sebastian is a werelion - born (1/2)

A fyotav, a thermoacidophilic sophont from a tidally locked planet orbiting a red dwarf, and a couple of their distant evolutionary ancestors. More about them in the replies. #SpeculativeBiology #SpecBio #worldbuilding #SciFiArt #OriginalArt
Drawings on paper. At the bottom is a fyotav, a sort of bipedal dinosaur-shaped alien with long arms. They have a proboscis resembling a neck and featureless mask-faced head, seven eyes (two visible at the base of the proboscis, one at its nape, two on the chest facing down), several breathing openings on the back + one at the tail tip, and are wearing a backpack-type thing. There are close-ups of their hand, which is biramous - three thick digits splitting into six along their length (text states they are all opposable to each other) - and of their foot, which seems to have three regular digits (actually fused with skin and muscle).

On top are prehistoric evolutionary ancestors. One resembles a fish or lancelet with a protruding snout and two pairs of forked fins: text reads “Vibration-sensing organs along back, gill pores along sides. Muscle blocks delineated here but not actually visible. Limbs evolved from gill spurs (used to help pump low-oxygen water)”. The other is quadrupedal, vaguely resembling an early mammal; it has a distinct proboscis (though not as long or developed as the fyotav’s), and the limbs are more separated from the respiratory orifices.

#SummerOfStories I already shared my current #1 fave passage (the opening to 🦋), so I’ll just do one I like above-average (and have posted a bunch of times before but w/e). It’s from Book 1 of 🦋’s series. I like how I showed both differences & similarities between autistic ppl / characters here.
“A lot of foods you can’t tolerate, you say?” Florence laughed. “I’m the same way. For example, I can’t stand fruit. Any fruit.”
“You’re drinking fruit juice right now.” Taryn couldn’t wrap her head around what she was saying. How it was possible to not like any fruit?
“Juice is fine. Solid fruit is the problem. I can’t explain it very well. It’s something about the texture and the juices when they’re still in the flesh.”
Actually, Taryn understood that. She loved eating olives despite being disgusted by olive oil. She occasionally enjoyed loud music, even though a shout of lower volume could bring her close to tears. A number of her repulsions seemed arbitrary to others. Thankfully, her family had always believed her about what she could and couldn’t tolerate. Understanding was not a prerequisite for respect.

Some facts about The Gift of Gloves, my WIP sci-fi xenofiction novella about the effects of the invention of gloves in an alien society! #QuestPit #SF #A #WIP #LGBT
A graphic reading: The Gift of Gloves. This is a story from the dawn of a world. A restless soul uncovers a miracle between the cracks in a tree’s bark, a way for her people to have more tools, more food, more medicine. The world changes forever in a lightning flash.
Unfortunately, it also opens the path for new sorts of wrongdoing. (One might call them unnatural, but beings which can think have left immutable natures well behind…) The background is a photo of a lightning bolt striking through a vivid purple sky (credit: Felix Mittermeier on Unsplash).A graphic with text reading: The Cast. Taigex, the inventor. Her lifelong yearning for more has finally borne fruit. Sezten, her mate. She has the foresight her partner often lacks. Yaxtan, the ruler of their home valley. She is grieving a death the invention could’ve prevented. Lapax, emissary from and ruler-to-be of the neighbouring valley. Yaxtan’s selfishness has hit her hard. Kurex, Yaxtan’s mate. He does little, but through that does a lot.
Next to each description is a little bust of the character. They are furry, snouted creatures with whiskers and goat-like eyes. Taigex is purple with yellow eyes and a longer snout and is looking down lovingly at Sezten. Sezten returns the gaze; she is desaturated pink with light green eyes and fur sticking up on her head. Yaxtan is medium purple with green eyes and is baring her teeth. Lapax is medium pink with yellow eyes and dyed yellow markings. Kurex is dark pink with tired-looking orange eyes and bent whiskers. The background is a close-up of pink faux fur (image credit: Gabflicks on Pexels).A graphic reading: Setting. The Gift of Gloves is set in an alien equivalent of the Mesolithic. Even the climate of the planet is similar to that of late Pleistocene Earth. Like humans, txentx are a highly social, omnivorous, originally plains-dwelling species which specializes in stamina; however, there are of course major differences, among them being the fact that they lack hands and can only manipulate objects via their prehensile tongues. Taigex's people inhabit a mountain valley in a region with a subarctic climate. They trade with a neighbouring valley annually, have a system of proto-writing, and hold that txentx are inherently, nigh-unchangeably morally good.
The background is a picture (drawn by me) of a ghostly txentx with pink fur, yellow eyes, and drops of soul-stuff on their whiskers. They are sitting, showing their emu-like body, and looking down.

#AwesomeCharacters Hollis Donici, one of the main players in the Verdantland Trilogy, is agender. They’re an archaeologist, believe in ghosts, and, alas, are under a lot of stress… Here‘s a drawing of them preparing their favourite mushroom burgers, and a snippet of banter with a coworker:
A pencil sketch of a white person with longish wavy brown hair looking to the side and smiling at someone offscreen as they flip a portobello mushroom high over a grill.“Uh, Hollis?” He let out a chuckle. “Are you alright? Did the ghosts get to you too?”
“We’ll talk later,” they said briskly. “We should get to the research station as soon as possible.”
“Good idea. I’ve been waiting to return to the world above.” Morris gazed up at the ceiling with faux-wistfulness. “It’s been so long since I’ve seen the sun.”
“Not even two hours,” Donici deadpanned.
“Time is subjective, you know.”

#SummerOfStories Snippet from 🦋. Machaon and his father have their picnic come to a premature end.
They packed up their stuff and hurried back towards the house. Machaon took the food, eating the remnants as they went, while Tomas carried the folded blanket under one arm. They got home right in the nick of time, the first drizzle of rain pattering against the grass as Tomas closed the door.

#SummerOfStories A more tired, accomplished short of bliss. Featuring a snippet from 🧤 for once.
“That was incredible.” Sezten let out a long breath and watched it turn to mist above her chest.
“You take the stick next time.”
“When is next time?”
“As soon as you wish.” Taigex sat up and set to grooming her mate's mane, plucking out clumps of snow with her teeth.
“I was going to say as soon as we catch our breath,” Sezten leaned over to return the favour, “but now I think that can wait a bit.”

#SummerOfStories Consicor (co-MC of 🌇) is literally a fashion designer. There was no other choice for this.
Consicor worked for the fashion guild. A lot of the clothing she wore was of her own design. The blouse she currently had on, matte white fabric with shimmery gold circle designs along the midline, was one of the creations she'd shown off at the last design show before Darby had left. So was the white hat with star-shaped purple beads sewn in around the brim.

#WriterShareWednesday FiaSB, sequel to A Summer with the Immortal, is the tale of a boy whose mother has been radicalized into an anti-forest movement, a uni student grappling with her place in the country’s climate, and the falsity of ”staying apolitical”. Also there are winged people.
A moodboard for a story. Top left: A red peacock butterfly sitting on magenta flowers. Top centre: A protest sign with a drawing of the Earth and the words “One World”. Top right: Tree branches with orange and yellow leaves. Centre left: The outdoor dining area of a beachside restaurant. Everything is white, except the chairs which are brown wood. Centre: The title of the story, "Forest in a Shadow Box", on a red background. Centre right: A cup of tea with painted yellow flowers around the rim and a bunch of tiny white flowers floating in the tea. Bottom left: A near-infrared photo of a derelict boat resting beneath a bush; the bush appears red and the sky appears cyan. Bottom centre: An assortment of pinned butterflies and moths. Bottom right: A train travelling through a forest. The trees around it are still green, but the fallen leaves on the tracks are orange.

#SummerOfStories (belated) #WriteSky Not epic or monumental, but certainly goosebump-worthy (and also the only one I could share without spoilers): part of 🌇’s prologue. Darbicor and Cevare’s game is up…
The game continued with a reshuffling. Darbicor engaged her precognition again. The stranger would most likely pull electricity-water-ice next... or maybe he’d sneakily reuse the acid while taking electricity and...?
???
The futures wavered in front of her. No longer windows but mirages, fragile warped air that shivered and shook. And then they vanished entirely, a sensation like the click of a short-circuiting wire snapping through her brain as her physical eyes were forced back into focus.
(Italicized) What? (un-italicized) Darbicor stared at the screen, watching the stranger draw his cards. (Italicized) I couldn’t have overexerted myself. Could I? (Un-italicized)
No, she didn’t feel overexerted. She waited a few heartbeats and tried to turn on her precognition again, but received only a strange staticky sensation under her tongue for her trouble.
She didn’t hear the footsteps until it was much, much too late. Until the closet door flew open, yanked with such force that the handle banged against the wall as light poured in from the hallway.
Everything ended in that instant.

#SummerOfStories I like starting them with casual discussion of / allusion to the central SFF elements, or a brief explanation of them (written in a way that doesn’t come off too “exposition-y”). Not always, though. I started TCotO (published novel) in media res, and as for 🦋… here you go!

(the mutation-hotspot which gave rise to volareans). But then Machaon goes to a town where many of the inhabitants are volareans, where *everything* is made with them in mind… and has his mind absolutely blown by the sudden easiness of it all. “If only my mother were to see this…”
He couldn’t get over how roomy the buildings were. The views through the store windows revealed enough empty space between their shelves for an adult volarean to half-spread their wings. When he entered the pharmacy, it seemed utterly unreal that there was no danger of knocking its skincare salves or supplement bottles off their shelves if he forgot to move in exactly the right way.
Don’t worry, whispered the open air between him and the aisles. You’re every bit as welcome here on the ground as you are in the sky.

Unlike me, he also has dyscalculia. This doesn’t hugely affect him in the story, but I do mention him using aids like an abacus and a digital clock. ♿️♾️📚
It was the digital type. Uncommon and expensive, but a necessity for him. His dyscalculia made the act of reading an analog clock take inconveniently long; each time he saw one, it was like the first time all over again, him having to piece together what the arrangement of the hands meant (especially if the face didn’t have actual numbers written on it).
The ease of reading it offered was extra convenient right now. Otherwise he might’ve trapped himself in denial, convincing himself he’d misread and equally slowly rereading it several times over in an attempt to make it “make sense”.

While he is medicated for most of the book, there are parts where he isn’t. Here’s some of how I write that (also lots of parentheticals). You can maybe see what I meant with “chronic understimulation“ as a descriptor - a brain trying to stuff itself full. #DisabilityPrideMonth #ADHD #ActuallyADHD
There really was so much STUFF around him, from the stack of multicoloured hairbands holding that girl’s ponytail together to the patchy white sides of the chalkboard eraser to the ribbed texture of his notebook’s binding, and each of those things sparked a chain reaction of associations in his brain. For example:
That girl’s hairbands would make a rainbow if you added orange and indigo and purple and switched the yellow and blue around. Wait, why is indigo considered its own colour on the spectrum when it’s just a shade of blue? Are there actually two distinct blues in a rainbow? Come to think of it, when was the last time I saw one?
And so on for every single thing he noticed.

(The paragraph about hairbands and colours is italicized.)

In Kenor, ADHD is called “chronic understimulation” (based on my own perception of what the “core” of it is). For Machaon and his father, their medication is tea made from an altered plant - and has developed into a beautiful part of both their lives. #DisabilityPrideMonth #ADHD #ActuallyADHD ♿️♾️📚
Machaon’s tea-drinking habit was another thing he’d gotten from his father. It was out of necessity. Both of them had chronic understimulation, a condition for which the most popular treatment was a tea made with buzz flower—an altered variant of thyme with long-lasting stimulant properties. He drank it every morning with breakfast.
This had led him to develop a taste for all forms of the drink. Right now they were having simple black tea. As he perched at the table, waiting for the teapot’s contents to cool to drinkability, Io took one of yesterday’s leftover sandwiches out from the fridge.

#DisabilityPrideMonth #autistic #ActuallyAutistic Now, it isn’t like life is a complete breeze. Both women have to deal with sensory issues and people sometimes overlooking / forgetting about them. There’s also the fact that Telluria is a world of constant change (mutagenic phenomenon), which…
Taryn was the type who easily got attached to things being one hyper-specific way. This tendency stemmed from the oversensitivity of her senses. Since small differences in stimuli could cause her physical pain, she instinctively protected herself by latching on to the things she knew were safe. And since she perceived so much more of them, this latching on was down to the very finest grain. Having a safe thing taken from her always threw her off and made her upset. She'd learned to manage it, but it was still unpleasant.

They also bond through showing each other stuff relating to the other’s special interest (biology for Taryn, photography for Florence). The fact that they, for example, never make eye contact does not make their relationship any less meaningful. #DisabilityPrideMonth #autistic #ActuallyAutistic
Behind her stood who could only have been her parents. Both of them had dark brown eyes (like Florence's, as she saw now) and light skin, and shared a similar short hairstyle between them, but otherwise they looked very different.
