Graham @parishrecluse.bsky.social · 15/10/2026Aww yiss — “Glorious Things of Thee Are Spoken” to Abbott’s Leigh will be the processional hymn on Sunday! So much better than singing it to Austria. 000 0

Graham @parishrecluse.bsky.social · 03/10/2026Me too. I’ve never liked having gas in the house. It’s always made me nervous. 010 0
Graham @parishrecluse.bsky.social · 03/10/2026I did what my great-grandmother on the island had to do and heated water on the stove for the washing up. 120 0
Graham @parishrecluse.bsky.social · 03/10/2026Came home from dinner to find the house smelled of gas. Called the gas company. Something on the hot water heater is leaking, so he shut off the gas to it. I wanted to make some bran muffins but didn’t want to waste hot water on washing up (hoping enough left for a shower tomorrow morning). 100 0
Graham @parishrecluse.bsky.social · 02/10/2026I like cooking, but I generally don’t like cooking for people with whom I’m not on fairly intimate terms. And I’m very funny about eating food that others have cooked in their own kitchens. 020 0

Graham @parishrecluse.bsky.social · 27/09/2026McIntosh is what I’ll grab if I can’t have a Jonathan. Red Delicious are a disgrace! 111 0
Graham @parishrecluse.bsky.social · 26/09/2026Sadly, after autumn, I have to wait another nine months or so to find more (I’ve never seen a Jonathan in a supermarket), so I take advantage of the bounty while it’s at hand. 000 0
Graham @parishrecluse.bsky.social · 26/09/2026A good Jonathan apple has a perfect tart-sweet balance and is amazingly juicy. (The one I just ate was so juicy that at times it felt as though I was eating an apple and washing it down with apple juice.) They are not so easy to come by, but a couple of the local orchards here have them in the fall. 110 0
Graham @parishrecluse.bsky.social · 26/09/2026Growing up, I never really liked apples. McIntosh were acceptable, but Red Delicious, which in the ‘80s and ‘90s were at times all you could find in a small supermarket, are like cardboard. A couple of years ago, a colleague turned me on to an old cultivar called the Jonathan. Love at first taste. 230 0

Graham @parishrecluse.bsky.social · 18/09/2026I’m more or less there, too. I can still manage a short distance on a well-marked road, but I’ve never had good eyesight at night, and it’s gotten worse. A couple of years ago I nearly ended up in a ditch when I was blinded by an oncoming car. 010 0

Graham @parishrecluse.bsky.social · 13/09/2026When I was 10 or 11, my parents took me up to the outside observation deck that was on the roof of the south tower. I took a couple of photos on disc film (how many remember that?), and these are bad scans of the photos I took that day. 020 0
Graham @parishrecluse.bsky.social · 11/09/2026I was 20. I didn’t have classes that day, and I woke up just before 9. I logged into AIM (remember that?) and a friend sent me a message that said “Turn on your tv.” “To what channel?” “It doesn’t matter.” And it didn’t. I was roughly halfway between NYC & D.C. Weather was beautiful. 110 0

Graham @parishrecluse.bsky.social · 07/09/2026Eleven years ago, I jotted down the first few bars of a nocturne that I wanted to write in the style of the Irish composer John Field (1782-1837), who invented the form. Like most of my compositions, I never finished it. 171 0

Graham @parishrecluse.bsky.social · 06/09/2026When I was in college, I was pulled over for running a four-way stop in Chestertown. I actually DID stop, but only for half a second or so.
