This is a picture of the 1981 album Simplicity by English actor and singer Tim Curry, just because, you know. It is not a great album, which you can tell because it was never released on CD or streaming platforms. But is has got good points. Nice covers of Dancing In The Street and She’s Not There, excellent solos by David Sanborn and off course Tim’s very distinctive voice. He doesn’t sing, he performs. I can’t even recollect why I purchased this album, but I’m still glad I did. The cover is in black and white, Tim against a city background.

This is a picture of the 2016 album Steppin’ Out by American jazz band Steps Ahead. This is a live in the studio recording with the German WDR Big Band. Steps Ahead have made a number of very wonderful albums with saxophonist Michael Brecker who sadly died in 2007. This is like a greatest hits album, featuring original band member Mike Manieri and Journey drummer Steve Smith. It is unbelievably good.

I just wanted to share an album, as usual, but then found this on YT. The album is Out of the Fog by Norwegian horn player Daniel Herskedal. The secret weapon however is Emilie Nicolas on vocals. Gorgeous!

This is a picture of the 1981 album Healing by American wunderkind Todd Rundgren. Todd plays and sings everything on the album, including rather intricate marimba. Side two is the three part anthem Healing. On some albums, there are two more songs on side two, with others the songs are added on a 7 inch single. My Discogs album has neither, alas. Nevertheless, this is an outstanding album. The cover is a subtly lit head of a boy being healed by a hand. The back cover has artwork by Prairie Prince (drummer of The Tubes), “showing the caduceus and a Qabalistic Tree of Life each overlaid by a treble clef (Which is reversed for the Tree of Life), reflecting Rundgren's linking of his spirituality and music.” (Wikipedia)

This is a picture of the 1977 album In Your Mind by British singer Bryan Ferry, whom you may have heard of. This is his first album of original songs, and they are excellent. It features Phil Manzanera, Chris Spedding, John Wetton, Paul Thompson, Mel Collins and others. The highlight for me is “Love Me Madly”. The cover shows Ferry’s head and shoulders against a white backdrop. He’s wearing sunglasses and is lit in different colors from all sides.

This is a picture of the 2023 album Marek Arnold’s Artrock Project by German prog rock keyboard player, saxophonist and composer Marek Arnold. A more than wonderful album featuring about 50 guests, including Peter Jones (Tiger Moth Tales), Arno Menses (Subsignal), Marco Minnemann, Kalle Wallner, Derek Sherinian, Adam Holzman and Steve Unruh. Sublime prog, all the more exciting because of the jazzy wind instruments. Highly recommended!

This is a picture of the 2023 album Street Of Minarets by Tunisian singer and oud player Dhafer Youssef. It’s jazz with a twist, beautiful tunes and virtuoso musicianship. Featuring Herbie Hancock, Ambrose Akinmusire, Marcus Miller, Dave Holland and Vinnie Colaiuta. The cover shows Dhafer surrounded by dozens of speaker horns.

This is a picture of the 1976 soundtrack album All This and World War II. It’s the London Symphony Orchestra playing Beatles songs with then-famous singers such as Roy Wood, David Essex, Lynsey De Paul and Leo Sayer, but also Elton John, Peter Gabriel, Tina Turner, Bryan Ferry and Status Quo. Some of it very corny, some of it very good. To hear Keith Moon sing When I’m Sixty-Four is a great joy. Never seen the movie.

This is a picture of the 1982 album Casino Lights, a recording live at the jazz festival in Montreux. It features many jazz greats, including Al Jarreau, Randy Crawford, David Sanborn, Larry Carlton, Yellowjackets, Mike Manieri (later Steps Ahead) and on backing vocals Richard Page and Steven George who’d later form Mr. Mister. A very good record. The cover is an abstract painting with various instruments.

This is a picture of the 2020 album Making a New World by English rock band Field Music. Originally made as a project commissioned by the Imperial War Museum about WW1 and how it impacted the 100 years since. It’s really great, at time reminds me of XTC. The cover is a drumkit in front of a abstract backdrop. Highly recommend!

This is a picture of the 1980 album Get Happy by Elvis Costello and the Attractions. Extra happy to have this in a 2015 double LP version, as my record player had trouble with the length of the original album. Great collection of songs! The cover is an orange square with artist and album title in blue letters, some green and purple shapes and three (the same) pictures of the artist. The circle of damage is also a print. Yes, it’s a busy piece of artwork.

This is a picture of the 1978 album “In Out And Around” by New Zealand pianist and synthesizer pioneer Mike Nock. It’s released on the Dutch label Timeless and features Michael Brecker, George Mraz and Al Foster. The rather ugly cover shows the face of Nock and some trees against a setting sun. The album is very, very good.

This is a picture of the 1979 album The Art Of Sunbathing by British new wave band The Sinceros. It’s a very fine and funny album full of exquisite powerpop. Particularly Words Apart, which was a single, is a great song. The band produced a second album and then called it quits. Still a pity. On the cover is a guy in a sleeveless shirt swinging a long stick with a yellow ball at the end.

This is a picture of the 1961 album My Favorite Things by American saxophonist John Coltrane. The first recording where he uses the soprano sax. Together with Mccoy Tyner, Steve Davis and Elvin Jones he plays four beautiful tracks, a lot more mellow than the sound we associate his music with. The cover is just John playing his soprano sax.

This is a picture of the 1974 album Wonderworld by British rock band Uriah Heep. Not the coolest band in the world but this album works for me. The last one with bassist Gary Thain, it wasn’t received very well. I love it, ‘cause it’s the first time I heard Heep. The cover shows the musicians on marble pedestals like statues, playing invisible instruments. Yes, it’s silly.

Neal Morse is one of the most productive people in music and you might find that this sometimes is reflected in his output: It can be more of the same. This is a picture of the 2015 album Songs for Quintet by Canadian flugelhorn player Kenny Wheeler. I first heard Kenny on the solo albums by David Sylvian and was very moved by his very recognizable sound. His albums, quite a lot made by ECM, are always gorgeous, with 1976 album Gnu High as the pinnacle. I saw him play in London sometime in the nineties with his band Azymuth. Wheeler died in 2014, which makes this album specially poignant. You can see in the photos and hear in his playing that he is ill. He still plays beautifully, but cautiously and fragile. The cover shows a black and white photograph of a tree branch. The package is special, because it’s one of the few ECM CD’s to differ. Not the usual jewel case but a three-way fold-out with an extra booklet with his entire catalogue.

This is a picture of the 1981 album Pop! Goes the Brain by Dutch new wave band Gruppo Sportivo. This album, overloaded with catchy poptunes and funny songs, is still not available on CD, but you can find it on streaming services. It’s a great album! My Old Cortina is a gorgeous song, for instance. The cover is red with the name of the band in yellow and the title in blue. In the upper right quarter there’s a rectangle cut out. The inner sleeve has eight pictures of the band dressed as a metal band, Adam Ant lookalikes, rockers and other stereotypical groups. In each picture, bandleader Hans Vandenburg is dressed in the wrong clothes.

I feel Joe has more and more become an acquired taste, because you never know what his next project will be, jazz, classical or rock. This one is definitely rock. It reminds me of XTC. This is a picture of the 1972 album Facing You by American jazzpianist Keith Jarrett. Wikipedia tells us it’s praised as a record that changed the course of jazz, but as good as it is, I think that honor falls on his greatest accomplishment, The Koln Concert. Either way, I love his music, but his vocalizing not so much. The cover is a black and white photograph of the artist in profile.

This is a picture of the 2017 album Pure Comedy by American musician Father John Misty, a pseudonym for Josh Tillman, formerly of Fleet Foxes. Produced with Jonathan Wilson, Tillman made this a concept album about a species with a ‘half-formed brain’. This is a picture of the 1990 album Concerto For Saxophone by American (film) composer Michael Kamen. The main event of this record is the three part “Concerto for Sanborn and Orchestra” that Kamen wrote in 1989. Oddly, the score wasn’t published until 2003. It features the late great David Sanborn on alto sax, but the other players on the five shorter tracks are great too. For instance, there’s Pino Palladino on bass and David Gilmour and Eric Clapton on solo guitar. The Concerto is really beautiful, Sanborn plays his heart out. The cover shows the face of Michael Kamen in black and white in a old picture frame.

This is a picture of the 2018 reissue of the 1977 triple album Consequences by Lol Creme & Kevin Godley. This brilliant folly was supposed to be a single album promoting the Gizmo, a tool for making guitars sound like a string section, but it soon got out of hand. Peter Cook was asked to do a sort of mini play and pretty soon his participation sparked new ideas with Lol and Kevin, which inspired Peter, etc. The triple album was released in a classy but expensive box set, the price of which was the last nail in the coffin. The album sold poorly and Godley & Creme never tried anything so bold ever again. That’s a pity, because the music is quite beautiful and with every new play you discover new things. The cover shows a threatening cloud with a scary face against a black night. The cloud was made of cottonwool, by the way.
