That's 9 strays off the street, and I get Buster. (Orange tabby Pomeroy, my inside cat, was grandfathered in).

Someone adopted the calico about 6 weeks ago. This week I brought the black and white kitty, the orange kitty and the blue-eyed kitty to the (very nice) shelter so they can get real homes.

They spent the summer lounging.

He was so engaged and curious that he just walked into the trap for his TNR. When he got back, his avid interest in the calico abated. (She was TNR'd too).

So I fed them. But word of delicious food got out in catland. The calico arrived as a wee thing, super shy of humans. The black and white boy who followed her was full of bravado and very interested in the little lady.

Just to note how stupid this system is...we just learned that 15 days ago, the Dept of Education awarded a brief contract to consulting firm Accenture to oversee sending emails to student debtors. It's a $350M contract. So it costs more to *service* the debt than to cancel it.

Reading this all I can think is: a professor in his 57th year at Johns Hopkins! Has he not noticed the crisis of jobs in academia? Considered retiring, maybe?

I'm not a lawyer and don't play one on TV, but I read the Guardian. “In California, calling yourself a lawyer without a license isn’t puffery; it’s a crime,” Michelle Kuppersmith executive director of the Campaign for Accountability, said in a statement. www.theguardian.com/us-news/2026...

Well I mucked up my whole Get 3 Strays to the Shelter plan by bringing the 2 I could find, making them wait so long in carriers they were super freaked out, and coming home to find this guy crying & looking for them.

He’s a stray I’ve been feeding for many months. Stray cats live only about 1/3 as long as indoor cats, due to weather, disease, cars, predators. He’s ready for a home.

Just spitballing: it seems to me like what’s selling right now are ginormous fantasy series books, which are not entirely in line with the local/literary indie bookstore vibe, but are probably goosing the overall fiction sales numbers in Publishers Weekly.

I’m not scared for nonfiction. I served as a judge for the National Book Award in nonfiction. I trust that readers will find their way back, and that reading patterns are often cyclical. I love nonfiction and it will be happy when its sales numbers go up.

160

Carolyn Kellogg @paperhaus.bsky.social · 09/10/2026

The 2 memoirs you mentioned are pretty NY-centric; I understand why they sell well there. Over at Skylight in Los Angeles, the top nonfiction books are Kyle MacLachlan’s memoir, an LA book, and END TIMES FASCISM by Astra Taylor and Naomi Klein. Different.

Yikes, 1997 just gets longer and longer ago. The Jabberjaw book “It All Dies Anyway" is pretty good, despite having some very tiny fonts. I think you can find it used. (And when I was at the LA Times, I wrote about it www.latimes.com/books/la-et-...)
