Unconscionable to let the great Donald Justice’s centenary pass without posting a poem. This paean to childhood from his debut collection seems only fitting.
The Poet at Seven

And on the porch, across the upturned chair,
The boy would spread a dingy counterpane
Against the length and majesty of the rain
And on all fours crawl in it like a bear,
To lick his wounds in secret, in his lair;
And afterwards, in the windy yard again,
One hand cocked back, release his paper plane,
Frail as a mayfly to the faithless air.
And summer evenings he would spin around
Faster and faster till the drunken ground
Rose up to meet him; sometimes he would squat
Among the foul weeds of the vacant lot,
Waiting for dusk and someone dear to come
And whip him down the street, but gently, home.

Differences of Opinion

I He Tells Her

He tells her that the earth is flat -
He knows the facts, and that is that.
In altercations fierce and long
She tries her best to prove him wrong.
But he has learned to argue well.
He calls her arguments unsound
And often asks her not to yell.
She cannot win. He stands his ground.

The planet goes on being round.

“Humanities degrees are useless” is propaganda that’s had the effect of convincing a whole generation that reading and critical thinking skills were unimportant. Now we’re reaping the results with mass illiteracy and a public eager to embrace conspiracy theories and fascism.
tweet from Heather Swadley saying she hates the “useless degrees discourse” because society needs “historians, philosophers and English majors” and their decline is a "huge reason" we're in the mess we're in]

Under capitalism, food isn't produced to feed people, it's produced to make a profit. When it's not profitable to feed people, we let them starve. Even when

From The Last Guy You Kiss, @carladeguzman.com's homage to Got 2 Believe: The Tita Claudine character is explaining to the actual Claudine Barretto character the concept of a movie where actress Claudine Barretto starred opposite Kris Aquino.
"Sukob is when siblings get married in the same year. That's malas," Tita Claudine explained, tutting her lips and whis-pering, as if talking about sukob at a wedding was bad luck in and of itself. "It's also a Kris Aquino movie. It was ok lang."

"Ate," Bong said behind her, holding his beer away from his body. "The point. It's way over here with my craft beer."

"Yes, the point," Tita Claudine huffed, making sure to di-rect a glare at Tito Bong before giving Mara a warm, gentle look. "The point is, Mara. Nalipasan ka."

Jusko, would she ever escape that fucking word? "And...?" "And so, money." Tita Claudine pressed the envelope into her hands. "It's a luck thing. Marina got hers, passed it on to you, and as her new ninang and ninong sa kasal, we added to it."
