If you want to hear what The Birds was before Evan Hunter and Hitchcock got their paws* all over it... *talons?

I mean famously one of the jobs he got, not one of the rejections! Anyway, read about how lobsters factor into Ed McBain’s life and career below (and be thankful I didn’t go into more detail about Regal Lobsters, because I could have).

Apparently it's #worldlobsterday! How do Lobsters factor into the Ed McBain story? Well, in the Fall of 1950, Sal Lombino was looking for work, whilst also papering his apartment in rejection letters from magazines and publishers. Famously, one of these was making sales calls for REGAL LOBSTERS!

My favourite thing to do? Add a tick to my list of P G Wodehouse books I’ve got and with today’s post of The Girl On The Boat I’ve now got everything from 1913 to 1977 and only five gaps to fill in the short period before that. Hooray!

Found another Evan Hunter short story I didn't have a copy of yesterday in - of course - the long running Canadian women's magazine Chatelaine.

"Evan Hunter, now famous as the author of Blackboard Jungle, Second Ending, and the Broadway play On The Seventh Day" says an advert for the Scott Meredith Literary Agency in July of 1957. Now, I've hear of the first two, but guess what folks? Seventh Day is *another* unproduced play by Hunter!

The tale of this thread is that there's not actually that many movies based on Ed McBain / Evan Hunter books, given he wrote about 120 novels. He sold the option for quite a few novels though... 1969's SONS was picked up for $400K and 1994's CRIMINAL CONVERSATION was picked up by Tom Cruise's co.

Now reading: ‘City Primeval’, Elmore Leonard, 1980. Oh, I get it now. This story is about cops and almost feels like an Ed McBain 87th Precinct novel, but grittier and more real. Something of ‘The Wire’ about it, too. Such clean, punchy writing, neither flashy nor dull. A total machine.

Well there wasn’t a spider in the ring box and nobody got bumped off, but I did get married a little over three weeks ago! A Scottish elopement no less.

A congratulations card reading Til Death and Happily Ever After and the McBain book Til Death in a Penguin edition showing a spider in a ring box.

This was made by Toho after the success of High and Low - based on another Ed McBain book, but no Kurosawa or Mifune (The amazing Takashi Shimura is in it though). Can I find a copy? Can I heck.

He did always deny it, but it's certainly more than possible that the smutty books of Dean Hudson came from the same typewriter that brought you The Blackboard Jungle, Cop Hater, the script for The Birds and short stories like 1954's "Dream Damsel"...

Oh wow! I didn't think this would ever get a release. Based on the Evan Hunter novel from 1968, the film came out in 1969. The book had a sequel 'Come Winter' in 1973. The movie did not.

In contrast to Kurosawa adapting the western crime novel by #EdMcBain, King's Ransom, as High and Low, he of course provided the raw material for the Magnificent Seven with his epic Seven Samurai. Amazingly I'd seen neither of those two films until this week.
