Such confidence for an emotion that was only just revealed to her, no matter how much it burned through her heart.

Confidence that would never, ever break, now that she had used some of her first words to declare as such.

It burned in the same way for Shinki. Ah, to hear the first of the Makaijin say that so readily… that was the joy that she sought from being the Mother of Makai.

The wings curved and encased the two in a cocoon, dividing them immediately from the rest of the world. All holds with Shinki would be special; this one was just more special than all the rest.

“And I shall love you for eternity, my child.

Thank you.”

Sariel watched on from the sidelines, not moving from her established position while her sister indulged in that moment with Yumeko.

“…Yumeko…

So that is your choice, Sister.”

Beginning

“Lady… Shinki…?”

Even the grim blue light of the braziers of Pandemonium’s Throne Room was something that Yumeko’s body had to grow accustomed to. Her eyes blinked with rapid frequency, and the calculated flexing of the various parts of her form helped her acclimatise to this environment.

“Lady… Sariel…”

Those words felt sweet as they rolled off her tongue. Her first words, in a world that was so young, so unexplored…

She didn’t know it yet, but that blessing would be one to cherish for eternity.

Yumeko looked down upon the palms and backs of her hands, and took small grips upon that shining ruby outfit that she had been gifted along with her birth; the fabric was so soft, it made her not want to stop touching it for quite a while.

It was pleasant… what a wonderful first experience.A Staff was placed against the royal seat, and then Shinki stepped forwards further away from the Thrones in her backdrop, closer towards the maid who was embedded both in her mind and her view, and further from her sibling that stood strong at her right side.

Pulses of crimson were still traversing the length of her wings — the Arms of the Infinite Being, and the tools of the Demiurge to create what was to become the Makaijin.

“Yes, my child. And you are to be ‘Yumeko’. You are the child that I have seen in my dreams, and you are now given flesh and identity by my will.”

Dreams? Child? Those were concepts that Yumeko wasn’t yet familiar with, and it was quite overwhelming for someone who was experiencing the sensations of everything for the very first time.

Her thoughts were muddy, jumbled in a pile where she had absolutely no idea how things should be. Her face wasn’t able to appropriately represent how everything was affecting her.

That wouldn’t be a concern for too long.Eventually, everything converged. The thoughts that were strewn about haphazardly came together as one, opening her mental eye to what her destiny was written as.

Service and devotion to those that had etched their divine selves into Yumeko’s fibre of existence. Instinctively, without even fully comprehending how one was meant to compose themselves in this situation, she brought herself to a knee.

Servile.

“Ah, Yumeko. Yume, dear. You do not need to do that. ❤️”

Shinki chuckled and quickly scooped the maid up into her caress. It was something that would become deeply common to Yumeko as her life as Pandemonium’s reverent servant progressed, yet here, it was as if she had unlocked something sacred.

It was sacred, after all.

Her limbs squirmed some in the confusion of what she was meant to do in response, then they settled while her arms languished in an attempt to lock around the goddess. Was this right? Yumeko had already been adorned with some sense of morality inside her, and it echoed through her while her fingers curled against the back of the one that brought her to life.

Protection and service were good. Things didn’t need to be spoken outright for them to be something that Shinki desired, and though it was difficult to be one-hundred percent confident that this was the right course of action, there was some compulsion that guided Yumeko to latch on, almost unfettered near the end.

“Love.”

A word that, as of now, should’ve lacked meaning. The maid had only allowed a small amount of the miasmic gases to filter through her, emboldening her already with strength. Yet, that word tolled like bells unrelentingly as she let herself look upwards towards the face of Shinki.

This was love. This is what she loved, and she only needed minutes to figure out that it was her reality.

“I love you, Lady Shinki.”

Time: ???

The puncture wounds were severe.

Runes circled Shinki’s fingers as they passed over Yumeko’s resting body. The maid’s breathing was staggered, though being drenched in the surrounding miasma meant she would always be vitalised by it.

“I am sorry… I am so, so sorry…”

The Creator’s tears had already hit the ruby coverings of Yumeko’s bed. Yumeko would heal, and the pain would eventually subside… yet it didn’t make the shared hurt between maid and mistress any less real in the moment.

The already-minuscule lighting waned along with its influencing force, with the runes also flickering and struggling to maintain presence in the world that surrounded them.

They would peter out completely as the sound of a tap upon the ground of Yumeko’s quarters rang out. The goddess, kneeling over the bed, tilted her head back to take in the view of the Angel.

A scowl developed, though Shinki turned back to facing Yumeko in an attempt to hide it—not that it exactly helped the matter at hand.Sariel always stood proud with that eternal expression of serenity, and her feathery wings pushed through the doorway…

“You need to leave.”

…only to be shut down at the word go. Sariel did cease moving, bringing the Staff in front of herself and planting it upright while it remained in her grasp.

“If space is what you require, then so be it.”

“Not ‘space’, Sari. You need to leave Pandemonium…”

Shinki gritted her teeth and tensed her body. She’d never done anything like this before, and the strengthening torchlight around the room showed to Sariel the turmoil it involved.

“…and you need to never come back.”

“Tch. You are making rash decisions in an emotionally driven state; what do you believe my exile would achieve?”

No adjustment in her unholy voice, leaving Shinki to wonder how much Sariel’s claims of care actually influenced her.

“You just cannot be here! If you remain, then I will… I will try to kill you again! You know I will!”Sariel scoffed further, though her expression was still static. Shinki’s emotions only further proved to Sariel that they were a weakness unbefitting of a God.

“Killing me wo–”

“WOULD BE POINTLESS! I KNOW, SARI! I AM SICK OF HEARING IT!”

Shinki’s vocal explosion caused the flames around her to expand and roar louder than they ever had before. The Demiurge’s wings also sprung to life, serving as a memory of what she was responsible for just before.

Scarlet marks, not because of the traces fed by her own blood, but instead left by the discharged life-force of Yumeko’s.

The reason everything was falling apart.

The glaring violet eyes soon faltered, and Shinki’s head was buried against Yumeko’s recuperating body.

“J-just go… please…”

Sariel, undeterred by the raging flames that now scorched the walls of the room, took one step forwards.

“You are acting irrationally, Sister. It was not by my hand that Yumeko’s state is now dire.”Shinki swallowed.

“I know…

It does not change anything, Sari…”

“Testing me…?”

“I am sorry, Yume. I had to know how much you could handle.”

Atop Pandemonium’s balcony stood its demiurge and her ever-loyal servant. Tears were streaking down the cheeks of Yumeko, and there was a tinge in her voice that she usually daren’t use with Shinki.

The backdrop of the sun and Greater Makai was as beautiful as ever, but the situation in front of Yumeko was anything but.

“You know I would worry over you! Being left without duty when I know I could be serving you does not mesh well with me, and that shall not change!

I need you, Mother… You have known since Makai’s inception that this is me, so what did you want to see?!”

Shinki looked out to the world that had been crafted by her, bringing her hands onto the railing of the balcony. There was so much to be proud of, and that is why this hurt her.

“…Yume…

If Alice had been coronated, what would you believe would have happened after?”“You said you would have ruled together, Mother! You, Alice, and with me in your service!”

“It may not have lasted forever. Reflecting on how it was with Sari… having two at Makai’s head may not be what she needs.”

A deafening silence followed that idea. Shinki didn’t need to outright state what the implications were for Yumeko to understand what she was getting at.

It was Yumeko that broke the quietude. The lights in her eyes were dim, and she was shivering in the overwhelming chill that was dread.

Locking her arms around herself didn’t help the comfort, nor did crumpling to the ground. Nothing could ease her when this was the thought that toyed with her.

“A Makai without you… is one without me…

Ending my life a million times would never equate to the heartbreak… of losing you once…”

“Alice would still want you to be here for her.”

There was that question again, one Yumeko had already considered it in the past: could she still love and serve Alice, even without Shinki there?“I wish to know where you intend on going to if… you did abdicate…”

A deflection.

Now the pause was from Shinki’s side. She peeled away from the railing to move back to her servant.

It was impressive how Shinki’s figure could both be one that struck fear into those that couldn’t match the level of a Creator God, and yet also so caring to those she held dear.

“I do not have plans.”

“Because y… you do not want to leave your creations behind.”

All Shinki could do was nod. Seeing them all beneath her in the distance, saying anything else would’ve been impossible for her.

“…Do you feel guilt, Mother?”

“I… suppose that may be an apt way of describing it.

Currently, I am not entirely certain what Makai needs.”

Shinki’s hands were rapidly scooped up by Yumeko, having brought herself back upwards.Shinki’s infinite perfection felt just as amazing as it did when Yumeko was held on the day of her birth.

Being without it would be a death in its own right.

“Then let us find out together. We do not need to assume it involves you stepping down.

I refuse to believe that it ever would need to come to that. Mother, I love you too much to let you go.

If it were a sin to ask you to stay for my sake, then that is a sin that I will hold to my heart forever.”

“It is not sin, my dearest Yumeko.”

The goddess encased Yumeko’s hands with her own.

“I cannot discount the possibility, however, and I would resent myself if I left you unprepared.”

“My answer is still the same.”

“That is what I am afraid of, my child…”

“Yumeko, Yumeko… Is such a vicious response really appropriate?”

Yumeko’s incredible strength was exerted upon the other figure stuck in her grasp, pinned against one of the walls of Makai City’s buildings. The unholy steel sat inches from her neck and was already hungrily licking against that fair skin.

The subject of Yumeko’s ire stood toe-to-toe with the maid in size. Her crimson hair ran the length of her back over her blackened dress, and was slicked over their right eye. Her left, brilliant in its ruby, peered right through Yumeko.

Their voice was sultry and firm, almost acting as a mockery of Yumeko’s regal inflections.

“I do not respond well to traitors, especially not to those that lead them. You are going to feign surprise when this is my response?”

The wind stood silent, as did the rest of the local area around them. Yumeko had pulled through an alley leading into a less-populated corner of the civilisation, and the girl followed her.

Their presence, evidently, wasn’t appreciated.

“You’re still conflating me with the ones that attack Pandemonium; you know I have nothing to do with their ilk.”

“Your dream of ‘reducing godly control within Makai’ makes your desire clear.”

The sword pressed deeper.“Rejecting the name Mother imparted on you, the rallies you perform to find others, the operations you perform in the shadows… the intensity of your sin is foul.”

The other Makaijin chuckled, still unfettered by their position—almost like she was welcoming the weapon that was grazing her neck.

“Expressing an interest in an alternative form of governance isn’t an act you can execute me for, Yumeko.

Not unless you want to upset Shinki, hm? Maybe you’re getting to the point where you aren’t concerned with how she feels, and just want to kill everyone that slights you~?

All I long for is a Makai where we have control.”

“By forcing Mother to abdicate? A peaceful traitor is still guilty of treason, you reckless whelp!”

“If most of her creations called for it, do you think she’d refuse? It’s not like Alice is coming back any time soon for her to give her the Throne.~”

Yumeko’s grip tightened in reaction to the question and statement, and the blade broke the skin just enough to draw blood. A drip fell onto the dress of the other.

“S-so fucking predictable… letting Alice be your weakness…~”

“…There are not enough faithless Makaijin to call for such an act.”

“Mainly because… you killed most of them, right…~?”

The derision continued, even as pain began to afflict her.Yumeko pulled the sword away before it dealt more damage, tossing the girl aside onto the earth unceremoniously.

They might’ve been opposed to the royal order, but Yumeko knew that their death would incriminate Pandemonium as a tyranny.

She couldn’t be responsible for dirtying Shinki’s image like that. Never.

“You are all a minority. You are all the cost of free will, refusing to understand her love.

You will never be anything more but a select few, consumed by sin.”

Yumeko’s blade was guided across its scabbard on her hip before it was replaced within it, all while facing away from the other.

“As long as I stand, your dream will remain unfulfilled.”

The other demon rubbed her neck, letting some blood transfer to their fingertips before folding them into her palm.

That was the first time Yumeko had gone even that far with her. Interesting.

“I still think you can be convinced. I don’t want Shinki gone, Yumeko. Wherever she decides to go, you can follow her if you wish.”

“And that place will forever be Pandemonium.”

“If that’s what you believe, Yumeko. We’ll see in the end, won’t we~?”
